Food has always been my biggest problem in the Philippines. Its just cheap and poor quality. Even compared to other S.E. Asian countries, Philippines hands down is the worst. Most expats leave because of women. They all think they will find a good Filipina. 6 months later they are all broke because the Filipina and her family took all his money. People need to be careful when watching youtubers, they never tell the whole truth!

How about you being specific instead of generalizing it. An Americxan couple has lived here for 50 years. If Philippines is the worst, no foreigner would even stay here. So, it's obvious you know nothing about the Philiuppines. And for foreigners having a bad experience with women here, they are probably the uninteligent just like you. You are free to leave the Philippines and never come back.

I tried to live in the phillippines. I did not do the whole pinay relationship thing that most guys go to the Philippines for. I did go because of watching a youtuber vlogger making the Philippines to be so great. I was there for a little short of a year. I traveled to many over 40 places there. I do not want to get into all the negatives but there are so many that I just could not live with. The filth, the poverty, the infrastructure, the lack of products, lack of quality medical care and so many more. Most of the Expats just go there for the filipinas, who only really want foreigners for a better life.

Being 64 years old, my logic for a lengthy stay would be just embracing the culture, people and landscape. Getting into the local music scene as in jamming with local bands and meeting the local people......not just focusing on meeting a filipina for a serious relationship. The Philippines has so much more to offer other than the obvious. I was in country 35 years ago as a young Marine at Subic Bay and I got a real good understanding of the Philippines......and I will always have much respect for the people and culture. Maybe one day I will return.

It's been a while since I watched any of your stuff.... Leah your mastery of English just keeps getting better and better. Thank you both for your words of wisdom. I am planning to permanently retire to PH very soon. I did my exploratory trip March-May 2023 in Duma and Siquijor and absolutely loved my time and the people. I am glad to report that I didn't find any red flags in your cautionary advice, but I would add a finer point to one of your topics.... traffic: It's not just that the traffic is bad, it's that it is dangerous. Most folks start out by getting around on Motorbike (which I love), but - like Paul/Old Dog they migrate to a car for safety. I personally love the rhythm of the Chaos but the traffic is just that, Chaotic. Fortunately it moves slowly at manageable speeds in Duma, and is Stop and Stop and Go in Cebu/Manila... but still even at slower speeds it's dangerous. Good episode guys. Peace and Love, B Goat

@leakyabstraction

Some stuff can be literally more expensive in PH. Lots of food items were more expensive when I was there last December, compared to here in Berlin/Germany. I know it's not a typical product people buy, but I like soymilk, and here practically all shops have relatively good quality ones starting from 0.95-0.99 euros, and in PH it was probably 2-3 times that. Also I had to buy some protein powder, and I'm pretty sure that also was twice as expensive as well. I'd hazard to say that even bananas in Manila were more expensive than in a regular grocery store in Berlin. Restaurant food is much cheaper, though, and also services like Grab car. Not to mention things like mangoes, which I love. :) What was really bothering me personally is that I imagined fresh fruit will be everywhere in PH, yet in reality I was often really struggling to find any fruit, except in Manila. Normal grocery stores like 7 eleven have absolutely no fruits or vegetables - really mind-boggling. It's much easier (especially as non-local) to buy fruit here in Europe. I think most resorts have absolutely no idea how to cater to their mostly Westerner guests... For them as locals it would be surely easy and cheap to find exotic fruits, and if they provided that I'd have been super happy and impressed.

Hello Leah and Gary! Thank you for your content. It's very informative! I've been to the Philippines twice. It was interesting watching your videos and seeing you mentioning alot of the things that I experienced and witnessed. The traffic is definitely insane! 😂 I drove in Manila and its suburbs and yea, it was Stressful! I'm a big meat-eater! I love my brisket, steak, and chicken breast. The food options were different for sure. The long lines were crazy. Especially going to the banks! Here we have drive through banks and if you wait 5 minutes, that's very long wait. But there 😂 if you got through the line in 5 minutes, it's a miracle! So my questions, if you will answer please: The topic of expats leaving, is it a mass exodus or just a few? My bigger question would be: Is it true that they are leaving mostly because they wasn't prepared and had no realistic idea what they're getting into....Or are there other reasons, like freedom?? I am definitely considering and saving money to move to the Philippines. My biggest concern is more along the lines of freedom. I love the freedom that we used to experience in the USA. Do I need to worry about that in the Philippines??? When I visited the Philippines, it was around covid and shortly after. It seemed a bit tyrannical in certain ways when I was there, much like our psycho cities like new york. If you wasn't vaccinated, you couldn't go to many places. Or you had to have a covid test within the previous 48 hours, which becomes quite expensive if you're paying for a covid test every 2 days. Please give me your thoughts on this. I'd also love if I could talk to y'all on whatsapp or email if possible, before I make the big jump. Y'all seem very honest, informative and a lovely couple. Thank you 😊

I was there for a month, partially to check if I could live there, and for me the biggest issues were: 1) Noise. Absolutely insane noise, combined with very poor building standards that let all that noise in. 2) Filth, dilapidation, and almost everything man-made being a horrible eyesore. 3) Having to struggle with basic things like drinking water. Here in Europe we mostly use tap water, and it's super comfortable compared to constantly having to worry about buying water and being careful with the tap water. 4) Lack of infrastructure, really weak grocery stores in smaller places. Even most 7elevens have no fruits and veggies, making it such a struggle to get something healthy. It was shocking that I realized it's easier to buy fruit in Europe. 5) Most accommodations, even resorts, have no consistent standards, absolutely basic things can be missing or completely different than in the description, and they generally put very little though or care into what someone who is visiting would need for their comfort. But, despite these I'm thinking about going back for one more month, because I loved some parts of Siquijor for example. I just have to be better prepared for daily survival. 😅

"If you find the right one". That's true of everywhere. The problem is with the misrepresentation, by KZbinrs and others, of the probability of finding a "right one". And a few short trips don't get you educated on the Philippines or Filipinas. It's likely to take years and many relationships with scammers, schemers, and fantasy dreamers. But isn't that what men are leaving their own country to get away from?

Safe travels. I think you will like Thailand. I just moved here and it already feels like home within weeks. The costs are so low and the people are kind and hard working. However, as a couple with kids, you've got to overlook some of the blatant 'tourism draws' if you catch my drift. However, I don't think it shines any negativity on the good people of Thailand. This is just how things work here - and some of us love it for all that it is.

I gave it a fair shot. I came over and lived for 1 year as you know from our in-person conversations Gary. What got to me was the extreme amount of pollution and the extremely poor food choices so I decided to move on right now. I'm spending a few weeks down in Belize very nice down here also English speaking. Also since I own my house in Florida the Philippines was just too expensive it cost me more to live there than it does in the United States that's for sure

Philippines more expensive than Florida? Florida is pretty steep, even by US standards. It seems impossible. Please show your math - some of it anyway? Or is it all about the lack of a mortgage in FL since you own it already? Then I can see where just adding overseas costs doesn't make sense, unless you rent out your FL residence.

I am making a trip back to the us for a lot of reasons. A granddaughter that I have never met, and the other two that I haven’t seen for a while. I want to visit my children and I had an old friend die . His death reminded me that life is short. I will visit my old friends. I lived a block away from the lake and sold my house to an old friend at a discount with me being able to rent it when I visit. I love bass fishing in the spring. I miss the spring. It is always summer here. I had heard people on KZbin saying that they hate being in the Philippines and my thought was ,you are an old man with a younger beautiful girlfriend how could you not be happy? I think that the Philippines is a great place. Hawaii only much cheaper but there are many things that I miss from home. It is a round trip tick of course!

Good video! I think also some people who are impulsive have not planned or managed their money well in their younger years. Also, many Americans are very family oriented but I do think those leaving their homeland to start a new life from USA to Phillipines may not have strong family ties. Not all of course. The Fillipinos that come to USA are going to help family back home. It is a given and not so sure if that happens when expats go there.

Thank you! My first trip to PI is during our American Thanksgiving. I’m visiting a friend who is neck deep in bar girl baby-dolls. I’m sincerely not judging; however, I’m completely not interested in sharing his pursuits. As a 59yr old divorced man, my desire is to let the Lord work in my life for his good in lieu of my own efforts. I’m going to seek out a church in Angeles and volunteer for humanitarian work. Perhaps travel during my stay and see the countryside. Make no mistake as I’m not angelic nor am I naive to our world. This topic has been heavy on my heart. I believe content can be available for believers with a desire to meet believers. Edify others and glorify God. Thank you for your response. May God bless your marriage! From California, JM

I'm going to probably be one of those crazy people that just packs up and moves there, however I don't plan on doing it right now. I'm looking at moving there closer to 2030. That gives me plenty of time to learn more about the country and see how things change over the next 5 years or so. I've always been fine with just going somewhere and living however I need to for the area so I feel I'll be fine there. My biggest reason for going is to be able to afford my retirement. There is no way I'll be able to afford American prices with my social security but I'm sure I can afford a relatively comfortable life there and still be able to save up money as I go. If I happen to find a partner while there then that would just be a bonus. My only big question is do they have ham? I can live without steaks but I really love my ham. :D

I have no idea. That's totally beyond our control. Farmers bear the burden of loss from disease, rising feed and fertilzer costs, but never have a say as to how much we get out of our cattle. A great majority of the money is being made by the processors and retailers while we are running very tight margins. Many farmers are getting out of the business these days due to rising costs leaving the U.S.A. to get their beef from Brazil. Scary thought. @@SomeUserNameBlahBlah

14:32 you nailed it - those years of watching "Fat Joe's Magical Life in the Philippines", just get your "boots on the ground" and meet all these beautiful, amazing women and friendly people who love you. Filipinos are indeed lovely, yet it's a highly problematic place. On top of that, the bottom's fallen out of the buyer's market vis-a-vis the ladies swooning over the foreigners (not sure that even existed in the years before COVID; maybe 8 or 10 years ago it did). Also, disaffected Americans probably account for 75% of the men you're talking about.

It's not just relationship issues or disappointments, it's the poor value you get for your coin. You simply pay More 4 less, in phillipeans. Accomodations are grossly over priced, considering the condition of them. Gasoline is very expensive, which in turn drives up costs of everything. It's simply hyped and spiked rated by you tuber's telling half truths n whole lies about living in the Philippines, just to get views, likes n subs to generate KZbin revenue, after all if KZbinrs told the truth about every day life living there, then viewers would just look and glance at other videos around the world, that would hurt the KZbinrs easy revenue flow, so it's in their best interest to pedal their fake narrative just to generate easy KZbin revenue.... I traveled 8 islands in the Philippines for 6 months, just last year 2023, absolutely know very little about Philippines, but enough to know that what you see n hear on KZbin is a pile of crap. Away over rated.... Just spent 2 months in Thailand, now onto laos for a month or two, then Vietnam for 3 months Assuming you have your health, energy and somewhat adventurous, I'd say bounce around the entire SE Asia region, even expand past the south eastern area, you never know you might find your paradise, why settle on some region that you heard or learned about it by some unknown on the Internet like a vologger

The main reason why foreigners leave is simple. It's all about money . The bloggers talk about how cheap it is living in the Philippines when a good standard of living is simply not possible on a thousand US dollars a month. I honestly think the Philippines sucks for retirement compared to other nations in SE Asia. There's a reason it's lagging behind the rest of the region economically (other than Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos). If you've barely been outside the West, why would you be so deluded to just move to a developing nation like Philippines? I spent over a year there once: - The poverty is brutal at times. - The place has terrible supply chains and is always out of stock. - The food is bland compared to its neighbors. - It's hard to adjust to the gossiping losers, the slow attitude to everything, and the massive lack of critical thinkers in the nation. - The customer service is often shocking. - The healthcare is terrible compared to Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, etc. - Most of the locals see you as a dollar note. - It's expensive compared to the rest of SE Asia. I hope these foreigners understand what they're going to before leaving their entire lives behind. Heading there purely for women will not make you happy.

If you are motivated to loose weight, the Philippines is thee perfect place to go, as the food is crap, so you won't be eating, only when totally starving then you will have a wee bit of their food, this sounds outrageous,, but true

Sounds like you're a typical steak and potato kind of connoisseur. Hamburger helper kind of person. Don't know what you've been eating there. Sounds like you've been eating some open market street food.

Haha I gain a ton (not literally) of weight. Not that the food is that good, but cooking yourself, if you know how, can make it a lit better. A key is finding a good place to buy meat. And get up early to buy fresh vegetables daily.

@@Ayutarda you could both be eating the same dish by different cooks and both be correct. I've experienced that in many places. Some people's cooking is heavenly and some pure hell.

The problem with American vloggers is that they talk like the whole world works and earns like the USA. It's not so. Think about it: you are collectively the top earners (or close to) over 195 nations. Your "average 70k a year" stipend is what everywhere else is top 5% income! When you say "xxxx it's cheap(er)" it means: "xxxx is very expensive for a third world country". I can live cheaper in western (the "rich side!") Europe than in any middle-sized Philippines city. When you say "come a couple of times", we "others" look at our wallet and see that every of those "couple of times" costs us 6 months of savings! Can't really test if the water is warm when all you have money for is *ONE* or two shots at best! At this point you'll say: "well, if you are not American / British with $3k a month" then just don't come! Well. *YOUR* toxic ideologies have ruined *ALL* the women in the western world so we, too, *MUST* shoot our shot in the Philippines just to have a reproductive try! Because of this we just have to try and hope for the best. If it goes bad... well... at least we have attempted our "once a lifetime" try.

@Brandon-yy5cc always go their boots on the ground don't worry about dating or relationship. Get yourself situated first believe me those Filipinas ain't going no where. And in choosing a Filipina don't settle for the first one date and let them know your looking around at other Filipinas they will respect you more Mike's retirement on KZbin has alot of great videos to just like Old Dog Paul and Baby Mae KZbin channel and Gio in the Philippines . These are the 4 I watched before making my choice to live in Philippines. I live in Negros Oriental Gulighan City away from Dumagete about 2 hours. Not alot of expats where I live so no drama
