The opening to Crazy train was honestly the reason I didn’t quit guitar. I tried playing other stuff, I wasn’t good, but I loved the way that riff sounded so whenever I was frustrated I could just fall back on that riff and feel great about my playing. That solo has so many tricks in it I learned from. Not to mention there also so many fill/licks that Randy Rhodes does which really made the guitar the “talk” or convey an emotion. I never made it big, but that hasn’t stopped me from playing and believing in the songs I write. I know if Randy Rhodes heard some of my guitar playing, he’d approve. I always loved your pull off riffs! And ever since you mentioned that you got the staccato strumming from sting, I can’t help but hear it some of your songs! I love your channel and I still don’t regret driving a couple hours and getting stuck in traffic to only catch the last 5 minutes of TBS back in 2007. My uncle took my cousin to see Angels and Airwaves and he said how much he liked “the color Fred” and thought you stole the show. Keep up the videos!

Top 5 Riffs that Changed my Life: 1: White Lights by Rufio - Every riff in this song made me look at guitar in a new way. Really, Rufio could be summed up as _the_ riff band, but this song i always come back to as find White Lights to be the 'perfect" guitarist song. 2: The Kids Aren't Alright by Offspring. First song i learned, has all the fundamentals of guitar that i use in every song. 3. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) by Metallica. The guitar riff starts at 4:50 (James sings the part at 4:07) and it uses all the chromatic notes from D to G (6 note chromatic riff). Taught me to not stick to the "rules" of major and minor but to serve the song. 4. One-Eighty by Summer by TBS. The intro riff taught me to not be afraid of open notes (Fred talks about this a lot). I've made a few riffs of my own with D and G strings open. 5. Buried Myself Alive by The Used. This song taught me 2 things: 1. Basic 8th note chord progressions can sound huge. 2. Weird sounds (a la Rage Against the Machine) don't have to be so "in your face" (talking about the verse riff) and can be sung over. Another great topic would be: "what are (#) riffs that influenced you, but you can't stand?" #1 for me, "Seven Nation Army", The White Stripes

That Van Halen riff always gives me the feels. I absolutely love that riff from Operator Error!!! I love how stripped down your rig is. When you have a JCM 800 you have 90% of what you need in just that. Any advice for some one who is 36 attempting to write and release something for the first time?
@TheColorFred2 жыл бұрын
Much like my rig, I'd say don't overthink anything. Just do what feels right. Make lyrics that are how you feel today, not how you think lyrics are supposed to be. I also find that when people think "go big or go home", they wind up not finishing. So just work with what you have. Nothing will ever be perfect. When it's something you could be proud of, call it done and write another one.

Haha, wow man! I have to say, I'm impressed with your attention to detail. The drummer, Mark and I had a mostly friendly argument about that chorus. I wanted it to be C and he wanted G. Neither one of us would let it go so we came to the compromise of making the listener wait until the end to hear the release with the G because the C was a little more dissonant to Mark. Hope you approve of our choice. Thanks for writing!

@TheColorFred4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think most people want to put their own touch on what they’re playing. I try to stay true to the recording if it’s a song everyone knows. If people are in the audience air-guitarring and you play something different, it looks like you’re the only one in the room that doesn’t know the song. As far as how you feel, it just depends how much you respect the other person. If I play someone I look up to, I wanna play it like him and nail it. If not, it can be no fun.

i love when punks appreciate music outside rock n roll....but i always have some stupid bias of negativity towards punk rockers learning and shaping their abilities as musicians from those avenues. i think a piece of that bias comes from not being able to learn it myself. like i love American Football, but i hate how all their riffs are in alternative tunings that i can't comprehend. just like Fred pulling out walking jazz melodies. i guess a piece of it is because punk rock n roll is so rooted in minimalism, and sloppiness, and raw power that something ornate and scholarly feels like betrayal. kinda like that scene in Good Will Hunting where Batfleck leans into Matt Damon for not wanting to do better than contract work. if you can wrap your head around jazz, then punk is like a waste of your time. ....but what kind of scene gatekeeping asshole would i be if there was no room for innovation? punk rock isn't about ONLY being sloppy, minimal, and angry at everything. the guys pissed off that they got kicked out of jazz band should be just as accepted as the guys that have no idea what the hell they're doing.

I know exactly what you mean. I think that notion for us came about in the 80s when all the shredders were so damn cheesy. Once Nirvana took the place of Poison on the radio it was hard to tell what was underground. Is Green Day punk? Most people would say yes but a lot of people our age are torn.

hi bro! what tuning do you use ?
@TheColorFred3 жыл бұрын
For this video, it's just standard. I often tune down a half step as well. Some songs I also use drop D or open G tuning. Thanks

Creo que es E standard

Considerando que Error Operator está en su afinación original, muy seguramente está en Half Step Down a lo largo del video.
