Fred, you are a legend my friend. So glad I got to see you in TBS at the trocadero in 2005 or so. Your music is legendary, and at 30-32 years old, my friends and I still belt out your songs. Thank you for the years and wonderful music. I am proud I was able to be old enough to understand and enjoy your music as a teenager into adulthood. Was truly one of the greatest, most passionate era’s of music ever and you should be proud all how many individuals lives you’ve impacted in a positive way. Thank you, Fred. Keep rocking on!

Lol not that there’s a lot of guitar work on that song anyway... lol

You’re a G and hope I can catch you live one of these days. I’m thankful that I got to see you guys back during Louder Now. It was the project revolution tour headlined by Linkin Park, MCR, TBS, HIM , etc. Anyways, I will be stufying you and your channel because it’s so interesting to hear your take on creating and music in general.

I dont know how I just stumbled upon this channel.. but holy f*ck I'm glad I did.. I've been playing guitar now for 23 years (I'm 34) and you're riffs inspired me so much.. I was a huge BP fan from the first time I heard you, i think on an equal vision sampler? Idr. I'm like the biggest TBS w/ Fred fan. Everything changed when you left. You made them what they were. Your dynamic back and forth with adam and the song writing was stellar. I also loved the color fred and terrible things. You've never had a bad project. I had no idea you started a channel! I'll be watching every vid man. I hope it blows up. I met you twice. Once at a show in nyc and once in philly. I was awestruck and awkward. Please keep it up man. I need more masherino in my life.

The opening to Crazy train was honestly the reason I didn’t quit guitar. I tried playing other stuff, I wasn’t good, but I loved the way that riff sounded so whenever I was frustrated I could just fall back on that riff and feel great about my playing. That solo has so many tricks in it I learned from. Not to mention there also so many fill/licks that Randy Rhodes does which really made the guitar the “talk” or convey an emotion. I never made it big, but that hasn’t stopped me from playing and believing in the songs I write. I know if Randy Rhodes heard some of my guitar playing, he’d approve. I always loved your pull off riffs! And ever since you mentioned that you got the staccato strumming from sting, I can’t help but hear it some of your songs! I love your channel and I still don’t regret driving a couple hours and getting stuck in traffic to only catch the last 5 minutes of TBS back in 2007. My uncle took my cousin to see Angels and Airwaves and he said how much he liked “the color Fred” and thought you stole the show. Keep up the videos!

Top 5 Riffs that Changed my Life: 1: White Lights by Rufio - Every riff in this song made me look at guitar in a new way. Really, Rufio could be summed up as _the_ riff band, but this song i always come back to as find White Lights to be the 'perfect" guitarist song. 2: The Kids Aren't Alright by Offspring. First song i learned, has all the fundamentals of guitar that i use in every song. 3. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) by Metallica. The guitar riff starts at 4:50 (James sings the part at 4:07) and it uses all the chromatic notes from D to G (6 note chromatic riff). Taught me to not stick to the "rules" of major and minor but to serve the song. 4. One-Eighty by Summer by TBS. The intro riff taught me to not be afraid of open notes (Fred talks about this a lot). I've made a few riffs of my own with D and G strings open. 5. Buried Myself Alive by The Used. This song taught me 2 things: 1. Basic 8th note chord progressions can sound huge. 2. Weird sounds (a la Rage Against the Machine) don't have to be so "in your face" (talking about the verse riff) and can be sung over. Another great topic would be: "what are (#) riffs that influenced you, but you can't stand?" #1 for me, "Seven Nation Army", The White Stripes

That Van Halen riff always gives me the feels. I absolutely love that riff from Operator Error!!! I love how stripped down your rig is. When you have a JCM 800 you have 90% of what you need in just that. Any advice for some one who is 36 attempting to write and release something for the first time?
@TheColorFred
@TheColorFred 2 жыл бұрын
Much like my rig, I'd say don't overthink anything. Just do what feels right. Make lyrics that are how you feel today, not how you think lyrics are supposed to be. I also find that when people think "go big or go home", they wind up not finishing. So just work with what you have. Nothing will ever be perfect. When it's something you could be proud of, call it done and write another one.

I've been trying to play Liar now for quite some time and just can't get those extra notes muted the way you do.. its unreal your talent.. and I love this channel also.. It's funny how while trying to relate to the influences I had, and during my teenage years have struggled to find some sort of musical identity, my influences (like you in tbs) had already been a result of influences on them.. as I go through this video I can identify each and every melodic part of your playing. if that makes any sense.

Man, now I understand where your sound comes from, makes sense haha. You're too 80s influenced and I always wondered why the first 2 choruses of "This Photograph is Proof" ended in C. Was this merely your suggestion? Either way I love it, because it makes the last chorus too emotional ending on G. Amazing videos Fred, keep doing them. Greetings from Mexico 🇲🇽💜

@TheColorFred 4 жыл бұрын
Haha, wow man! I have to say, I'm impressed with your attention to detail. The drummer, Mark and I had a mostly friendly argument about that chorus. I wanted it to be C and he wanted G. Neither one of us would let it go so we came to the compromise of making the listener wait until the end to hear the release with the G because the C was a little more dissonant to Mark. Hope you approve of our choice. Thanks for writing!

Hey Fred, mind doing a gear reveal and review? I know you play tons of Gibby Sg's (I play Gibby Sg's and Gibby Les Pauls) but I loved the tone you're getting so it must be paired with some great pedals/amps

🤘🤘 awesome! I always wondered what it is like playing other people’s riffs. Like what does John Nolan think about one of yours and you about his? Would you be like, “damn that is good” or something like “I’d do something a little different here.”
@TheColorFred
@TheColorFred 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think most people want to put their own touch on what they’re playing. I try to stay true to the recording if it’s a song everyone knows. If people are in the audience air-guitarring and you play something different, it looks like you’re the only one in the room that doesn’t know the song. As far as how you feel, it just depends how much you respect the other person. If I play someone I look up to, I wanna play it like him and nail it. If not, it can be no fun.

it's that 800 through a vintage 30 celestion cab placed outside the studio. Mic'd with a 57 and a Sennheiser 421. Not much on pedals except MXR Phase 90 on VH, Boss Chorus on DagNasty and a Digitech Bad Monkey Distortion on the more gainy parts.

i love when punks appreciate music outside rock n roll....but i always have some stupid bias of negativity towards punk rockers learning and shaping their abilities as musicians from those avenues. i think a piece of that bias comes from not being able to learn it myself. like i love American Football, but i hate how all their riffs are in alternative tunings that i can't comprehend. just like Fred pulling out walking jazz melodies. i guess a piece of it is because punk rock n roll is so rooted in minimalism, and sloppiness, and raw power that something ornate and scholarly feels like betrayal. kinda like that scene in Good Will Hunting where Batfleck leans into Matt Damon for not wanting to do better than contract work. if you can wrap your head around jazz, then punk is like a waste of your time. ....but what kind of scene gatekeeping asshole would i be if there was no room for innovation? punk rock isn't about ONLY being sloppy, minimal, and angry at everything. the guys pissed off that they got kicked out of jazz band should be just as accepted as the guys that have no idea what the hell they're doing.

I know exactly what you mean. I think that notion for us came about in the 80s when all the shredders were so damn cheesy. Once Nirvana took the place of Poison on the radio it was hard to tell what was underground. Is Green Day punk? Most people would say yes but a lot of people our age are torn.
