Here in NJ, most of these stores are just stuff you’d find in the local shopping mall. Most super-wealthy suburban towns don’t have any retail or much commercial activity at all. This list applies moreso to the upper middle class towns

Okay, we have everyone single one of those in my neighborhood. But I'd add that real fancy schmancy is not necessarily Trader Joe's, Pottery Barn, or Anthropologie. Whole Foods, Williams-Sonoma, Crate & Barrel more upscale. But then there are really upscale like the Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Tiffany's. Below, agree with Cartier, Van Cliff & Arpels, & Hermes. Your list is mid-to-upper well-off suburban professional neighborhoods, but not the wealthiest, most exclusive neighborhoods.

These brands are fairly synonymous with the "upper middle class," but not necessarily with true wealth. A community with real wealth will boast its own Gucci, Burberry, and Louis Vuitton, which are often located across from each other. Tiffany is also a must, which typically leads to a Cartier, as well. As far as clothing and furniture... the entry level brands would be Ralph Lauren, Lilly Pulitzer, and Restoration Hardware (RH). (Any community that can't support a free standing Ralph Lauren boutique probably doesn't have much wealth.) The ultimate luxury brands, Hermes and Chanel, will appear once the the rest are established. If you're lucky enough to have Hermes and Chanel in your town, then you're probably living within walking distance of at least two billionaires.
@nicolehall6942 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. Seems as if the list and the channel as a whole is made by those who don't actually have money and they are instead guessing by what they see on TV and online

@MickeyMouse. Those stores pre-date those people. They were once the private domain of the rich. But awareness of luxury brands has been democratized. 70 years ago, the middle class had no idea of Hermes, etc. They were the secret social signifiers. Once carrying a Kelly bag was a quiet sign of wealth only social equals understood. I am shocked the middle class now recognizes them. They/we now scurry to find new ones: Loro Piana, Isaia, Villebrequin. I no longer wear my Hermes belt. It’s too obvious. I prefer the subtler signs that are still unknown to most. Hey, it’s very “Sneeches on the Beaches.”

About half these shops are within a very short drive of where I live and are patronized by the middle class. I do not consider these shops to be anything special. To me, a rich neighborhood is one that has shops named Tiffany, Cartier, Prada, Rolex and Chanel -- and not shops of different names that just sell some of this kind of high-end merchandise. If you live in a luxury hi-rise building within walking distance of a Prada or Chanel shop, then you are probably rich (or are live-in staff for someone who is rich).

For a time, things were better financial wise in my family. We lived around the block from a Starbucks, a Trader Joe's and less then a half mile from a Whole Foods. We could not afford to stay. Now it's started all over where we moved to. My area is probably upper-middle class but I spent my life as an army brat, living in really not great areas and when I moved out on my own for the first time I lived in the hoods of bmore because it was what I could afford being in college and also what felt relatively comfortable for me being an introvert and POC. I moved back in with my parents after an accident took both of my legs and have been here the past 4 years now. Around us there are plenty of Starbucks so I wouldn't count that unless your Starbie's has two floors in which case, yah...that's the schmancy kind frfr. We also have a Ruth's Chris and high end spa's in one of our shopping centers here, but just up the road is also a dollar store, a goodwill and a Giant. I'm sure that this area is in transition, but even in the surrounding area's here you'd be hard-pressed more than a handful of homes that are not townhomes, condos, or apartments. There is a bit of farmland and a few people that own horses all within a three mile radius, but you won't see many nice cars or run into many people who aren't frugal. Where I live is confused, LOL. There's a Sak's OUTLET, a Wegman's and a Redford's East but they're right across the street from a Old Country Buffet and an ABC's beauty supply. And yet they all stay in business as if we here embrace such confusion, lol. Maybe my area is where the wealthy come to slum it?

The rich neighborhoods in my area have way different stores. They have things like Farmer's Market "grocery" stores with 12.00 dollar duck eggs and 9.00 dollars for a gallon of goat milk. E-bikes left out all night in their driveways and they don't get stolen...ever. Stores that sell only wine, whiskey and micro- brew beer, stores that only sell picture frames, seriously, how do they stay business. Little cafés with pun names like....Boutros Boutros-Golly.....instead of Ghali, that is what the weathly neighborhoods near me have. I can't afford to live there, I just drive through the area going to work, none of the snotty town council people would let any chain stores, anywhere, near them. Pottery Barn and Crate Barrel? Meh. Their stuff is made in China, so I don't think that is really that head turning. I mean, if people who shop at these places think they are wealthy arenas I would have to say they are not that informed shoppers. Nemian Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Norstrom, Coco Channel, Cartier, Tiffany, Hermes Shreve&Co. Burberry, Coach, Vuitton, etc. And those are a fraction of real high-end stores where I live that have a strong Prominet mark that screams big money. Mainly, on a global scale where wealth is to be found, always stores such as Coco Channel, Cartier, just to name a few will be found as well. The comments on here who claim that stores such as Cartier. Coco Channel, etc. are just names where rappers shop is baloney becuase the very, very exclusive areas that are located near where I live these millionaires and billionaires are tech rich, Chinese wealth, and other foreign wealth, and old money.
