My rescue mission failed because I had even less fuel left in the rescue vehicle than the vehicle I was rescuing. Jebediah and Valentina are now both stuck on the Mun together… At least Valentina will be able to tell Jeb about her like 8 or 9 Minmus landings.

@@lyly_lei_lei That isn't that uncommon. Your first mission probably landed at whatever spot happened to be convenient, and the rescue came in on a different trajectory and had to spend extra fuel to get where it needed to be.

OK, maybe ladders are not _necessary_ on most of bodies, but they are very _convenient._ Especially if kerbal runs out of EVA propellant :-) Also, if player _decide_ not use ladders - OK, but if he/she _forgot_ them - it's mistake anyway. I'm new to KSP and last night while trying to get a station into orbit around kerbin for the 3rd day in a row I decided my design just wasn't working because of poor aerodynamics so I scrapped the whole thing and built a new station and rocket, turns out I needed more thrust to get up there so I added boosters, they wobbled off mid-flight, so I added struts like crazy, so next time I launched I got about 0.2 m/s thrust at full blast that maybe doubled every 5 seconds as the launch went on, but finally it got up there. I'm confident that if I had added one more strut I would have had +-0 m/s thrust.

Struts are physicsless, they don'tt add weight. There are other physicsless parts as well, I think Scott Manley did a video on what happens if you build a vehicle only using them. It is possible that they fixed this, though.

When I fist played KSP I couldn't figure out how to throttle liquid fuel engines and I figured that they just didn't work (this was before they were auto-throttled to 50%). So, I just used solid rocket boosters for everything! I actually got surprisingly far.

So here's a numb nut thing I do; I launch my rocket only to realize I forgot to put on a battery, return to assembly for that purpose. get side tracked adding a different booster configuration, launch and realize I forgot the battery, return to assembly, get sidetracked adding a little more fuel and restricting the booster thrust, launch and realize I forgot the battery, return to assembly, re-organize my staging, launch and realize I forgot the battery, return to assem.... you get the idea.

Mr Me I've "done" it by entering Jool's atmosphere in manned capsule, then getting as low as I can, and then getting out of it by burning tons of fuel. But... It was worth it. I entered Jool's atmosphere when there the sunset was... It was beautiful.

While you are descending, don’t use too much time warp and keep your velocity below 100m/s at the very minimum. Then gradually get slower as you get closer to the surface. When you are landing, keep your speed below 5m/s otherwise you may break the landing gear. Hope this helps ^_^

A few of my own: 1. Start your fuel cells. Actually, set start fuel cell to an action group such as, I dunno, STAGE. 2. Disable steering on landing gears that aren't for steering. 3. Set stiffness on landing gears. For the love of god. 4. Design your cargo planes around the cargo bay. If you fail to do this, it doesn't matter how capable your SSTO is, it will have miniscule cargo capabilities.

I had one rocket work perfectly the first, second and third time i launched it only to realize that I had forgotten the docking ports when I had finally gotten to my space station. Left it in orbit and called it a night. The next day I couldn't even get it off the launch pad as it kept blowing up.

My current save is going mostly fantastic. Only a few actually failed missions, such as Muna 2 (first attempt), Muna 6, Duna Observation Probe, Advantage 1 (first attempt), and Muna 2 Rescue Mission. I’ve had a few close call missions such as Minma III and Advantage 1 (2nd Attempt), but they succeeded in the end. No Kerbals have died at all, and I’ve only had one rapid unplanned disassembly, which was Advantage 1. My stupidest failure (other than Muna 2 Rescue Mission) was my second attempt at a Duna mission, Advantage 1 (1), where I forgot parachutes, and the engine didn’t have enough fuel to land the craft, so I watched as it smacked the lowlands at 500 m/s. Advantage 1 (2) made it to the surface safely after a bit of a close call with parachutes and some damage to its solar panels, but still has some solar panels left. I need to send a rescue mission for Muna 2 and its rescue mission. My main source of income is planting flags on Minmus.

Possibly a few things I tend to forget: 9. Not assigning kerbals other than Jeb, Val, Bob, or Bill. Or just Jeb, for that matter. 10. Not using custom action commands, forcing me to manually extend solar panels, radiators, cargo bay doors, and ejecting the occasional antimatter containment device that's "accidentally" run out of power (KSP Interstellar). 11. On that note, forgetting to put enough radiators on KSPI reactors. 12. Also, forgetting to add the correct fuel type for whichever low-thrust high-ISP thruster for probes, satellites, etc. KSPI is like learning an assembly language; 90-degree learning curve, but well worth the effort.

I am beyond frustrated. I have no problems getting to orbit or landing. I can do science..transmit or keep...do EVAs..etc... But when it comes to using the maneuver nodes, i find it impossible to create an even slightly symetrical orbit. Then when going to the mun for a fly by and return trip to kerban, the maneuver nodes become wierd. The muns gravity changes the crafts trajectory and then i am unable to create a maneuver to get back. I can head off into deep space or get stuck hiding in a mun orbit because i cant figure out the maneuver node lines. It will not aim back at kerban. At all. Not only that but, all of scott manleys tutorials have been affected by all the changes. Also, gravity turns the old scott manley way seems ineffective. Are there any videos that point out relatively recent changes? Im about to give up on KSP anc uninstall it. Ive spent hours and hours this past week repeating the same fee tasks that manley did in his first 8 career mode vids from 3 years ago. Following him step by step doesnt work. Research is diff..aerodynamics is diff. Etc. I played 2 years ago..watched his vidd..and yours..and jacks..and now im coming back to the game and am unable to do anything outside of kerban. Ive never docked..or built a space station..or been to any other planets. Desperate for some helpful advice 🙁

Kill Walker make maneuver nodes for prograde and retrograde on the apoapsis and periapsis

I just started KSP myself. I find it easiest to do one maneuver node at the time. Split your burn time in half, and then you know how far before the t- node you should start the burn. I throttle down at the end of burn to get the excact trajectory, at the same time I switch to target, like focus Mun, and click AP to see how close I want to be, while finely tapping shift and X to fine tune it. Also you can press M and rightclick engine and make throttle 1-5% to REALLY fine tune your trajectory at the end of burn. Hope this helps. I find KSP very exciting! :D

I've been playing KSP for about a week now, I've had some beginner mistakes that were pretty funny: The most common one was pressing space again to retire my engines instead of pressing z or shift, I had to hit f9 many times before I learned my lesson. Using solar panels that can't retract and not realising until it's too late. For my first lunar mission, my lunar landing module was wayy too tall and my landing zone was not flat. Tipped over on almost every attempt. Sending a probe to mars without realising the antenna was too weak to reach kerbin Sending a manned mission to mars without tracking solar panels and finind the ship dead halfway there. And lastly, not knowing how to do some things which are so simple for the ksp community. For a while I couldn't figure out how to use bob as a pilot and still have SAS in career mode. Seems everyone will get angry and tell you to use Jeb instead, but it's totally possible to have SAS if you use a probe core, the hard part is finding the information while dodging the people who don't even read the question properly.

I use RTG's, just because I am not a total fan of the stock solar panels you get. Sure, I can download a mod, but most mods for me in 1.3.1 don't work.

I don't think not using parachute is a mistake. Falcon 9 doesn't use parachute, They do vertical landing.

My big one is forgetting to deploy antennae. It's especially a problem because most of my ships are robotic. I fit multiple "umbrellas," but sometimes forget to deploy them and lose control if the ship is out of range of my Minmus and Mun relays. I haven't deployed more relays in the Kerbin system because I always fit big antennae... :) In many areas of life, I remember everything when I'm new to something and struggling with it, but start forgetting things later. There's a saying which sort-of fits: "Familiarity breeds contempt." To get around this, I make a to-do list while building, but sometimes I forget to add something to the to-do list. Once or twice, it's even been the ore canister, which is strange because I build so many mining ships. Familiarity breeds contempt. Contributing to the contempt is the fact that large empty ore tanks weigh so much, I find it better to fit a fuel factory to every ship, industrial or not. I'm usually dilligent with setting up staging, but in spaceplanes, I mess up the order to see how much delta-V and TWR my nuclear engines will have when the jets or RAPIERs are done. :) Sometimes I mess up the order in rockets too, but can't remember why. It's probably for lander TWR. There's all that and forgetting to like videos...

Summery of my common mishaps: -Not enough electric charge/batteries (ie, send a probe mothership to Jool, has 5 electricity and dies as soon as it’s staged) -Forget probe cores on anything that has a command pod but no kerbals (alternatively, putting probe cores on spent stages for recovery, but then forget to turn the core on) -Launch a vehicle that’s supposed to dock with station, then only after I can’t revert flight realize it has no RCS control (has happened SO MANY TIMES) -Putting anything *near* a hatch so it prevents kerbals from ever leaving the craft (unless docked where you can transfer crew) -build an ore miner, balance the RCS, work the electricity situation, Launch it, land it on your target, THEN realize when its fully loaded it can’t take off again because the TWR is now shifted below 1 And Rest In Peace many a space station where orbital rendezvous quickly ended after the vessel time warped into the station. Many kerbals lost in the line of duty lmao

I returned from my 2nd Mun landing, re-entered hot for a single re-entry: basic Com pod + service bay + heat shield, 3000+ m/s, Kerbin peri 30km, Apo near Mun (I am testing re-entry limits as I am a noob), and I came through ok (all my science are in a service bay as I am sure they would have burned up if externally placed). As I am floating towards the surface I do the usual EVA, science etc. Im bored now still floating towards the surface so I click on the heatshield to see how much was used and found out I forgot the heat shield! Now I do Mun and Minmus missions without the heat shield :D
