I'm probably the only Chinese and only Asian person here who has parents who don't care about grades. They only care if I get a D or an F. Not even a C would catch their attention. What catches their attention is what the teacher thinks about my attitude. Like, they would ask the teacher like how I react to certain situations and how I behave. My mom said it's for safety reasons, and also for not embarrassing myself. My parents are so different from regular Asian parents.

Anything below a 90, they will degrade me to the point of tears of frustration, it only takes like five sentences and I've had enough. They relentlessly critisize my every action. Everything they say contradicts to when the situation happens, they are major favoritism type parent. My little sister gets everything, and all I have is nothing but critque. They never have really considered my feelings, I know they do it because they care, but it's negatively affected me. When I was younger I like to study, but as I got older they pushed me to the point that I really don't care anymore.

Well I guess I'm one of the lucky asian who has cool parents and they let me do all what I want because they trust me enough. In fact, my dad is the one who introduced me the video games and also he taught how to play Starcraft - and that's the reason why I'm into games. They're only strict at me when it comes to the time I left the house (my dad is an Army so he's particular with the time), they monitors me the moment I step out of the house. I'll receive a lot of sms and call when I didn't reach home in their expected time.

***** So true... hehe!!! Specially now that I have my own family, we just check each other once in a while. I appreciate everything they've done to me and I'm thankful they did. Now that I have a baby, I appreciate them more and more, and I look up to them in raising my son. :-)

***** Wahaha!!!! My friends and officemates told me the same thing until now that I’m 30 years old. I’m currently in UAE, so Arabs thought that I’m just a kid. There’s disadvantage of having baby face and that is, most of the time at work, they don’t get serious and underestimate with you. You need to prove a lot of things for them to know that you’re competitive enough.

Almost all true. My very traditional Mum loves rich western cooking but tsks throughout about how "rich" the dish is which she eats once half a year. Its tropical here, I find it too hot to use the oven unless its the end of the year.

This is not right. I am Asian mom. I encourage my kids join any sport team if they like even football. They Can sleep in if they do not have anything scheduled. They can play vedio games over weekend and vacation time. They play band instruments. They can choose what ever restaurant they like but junk food and soft drinks are excluded. I am more than happy to learn how to cook western food too. They can choose what music to listen. As for their school work, it is all fine if they put enough effort. They should be themselves and enjoy their own life.

My mother is from Okinawa, and the moment she got here, she loved American Football. When the Chiefs are playing the Broncos, all yelling comes from her. But...she hates cheese, rock and roll/rap/anything not pop, and sleeping in. Edit: Also, while visiting my grandparents there, I was walking down the street and the streets are rather narrow. So next thing I know, this hummer that takes up a lane and a half rolls down the street...driven by some 5 foot tall Okinawan woman. I couldn't believe my eyes.
