Being Asian American myself, I have a love hate thing going on with the "What kind of Asian are you?" question. Probably because I am in a literal melting pot area of the country. We have people from just about every country here with people who are Chinese/Vietnamese or Chinese/Filipino or Chinese Taiwan or Chinese PRC or Chinese/Singaporean - We also have people from Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan etc. I am always interested in finding out the background especially if we are going to eat. I think, you guys, should refer to Chinese more and not to tell for all Asians, simply because there are so many of us. And although chinese are large group by itself, it doesn't mean that ALL asians share same viewpoints. Koreans, Japanese, Malaysian, Singaporean, Indonesian, Kazakh, Bashkir, Kyrghyz, Uzbek, Uighur, Tatar, Turkmen, Nepal, Burma, Tadjik, Chechen, Ainu, Karakalpak, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India etc. There are so many of asians, it's just ignorant to put all of them together with Chinese culture. Marlies L. interesting topic.....the white can tell where other whites came from simply by looking into the face feature then later by listening to their talking slant...but Asian can never tell where the whites came from....same logic! I do not think you should be offended with someone asks you what type of Asian you are (although that is a weird way of asking that). It is not an uncommon thing for two white people to ask something like that. Basically what they want is to know where you are from and if possible a story. For instance is it like this if someone ask me. On my mom's side, I am Irish, English, & Norwegian. On my dad's side, I am German, Hebrew, French, Spanish, Basque and Scottish. My mom's family fought in the civil war on the northern side. My great great grandfather was shot in the stomach but live onto his 90's. My Dad' mom married my grandfather to escape Germany during the last world war. They came here to America (mostly because of his influences) (He was some type of royalty before all the reforming of the governments). My Grandmother died shortly after giving birth, so my father was adopted by a preacher. (I don't say that each time, all at once...but throughout a conversation...It is just that you are not responding to me as I type)...(I hope not, anyways) :)
@crazy808ish9 жыл бұрын

Well no one says, "What kind of white are you?" 😂
@undecidedgenius8 жыл бұрын
+Chelly Touy Like I said, it is a weird way of asking. Two white people would ask each other, "Where was you family originally from?" and we might even have to clarify if they say something like "Michigan" (it is always Michigan). The only reasons I would normally ask if there is some unusual food or custom (I think, the last time I asked about someone's country of origin, it was because he mentioned his father accent) However as far as someone asking "What type of Asian are you"...I personally would look more at intent rather than his choice of words. If the person meant it is be an insult, than take it as one. However if he is just a little dumb, does it do any good for either of you, if you get upset over it? I would personally answer the question (calmly) and than either ask what type of European are you or (if you have more time) explain why that upsets you. Sorry for this really long answer.
@Marmite_enjoyer8 жыл бұрын
+undecidedgenius As someone who loves to learn languages I always ask people what their heritage is or their name. People always ask me "So what are you?" because I look strange and then I love explaining that I'm mixed Jamaican, Indian and English and the history behind my family. If I can determine where someone is from or more importantly, what language they speak, then I can practice using that language. Whether it's Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Russian, French etc.
@wolfsmith28655 жыл бұрын
I was disenheartened to hear that you dislike being asked about your heritage/nationality/origin. One of my great delights is finding out new things about other cultures. As for the "What Kind of Asian are you?" question, I don't see why that's racist or a pet peeve at all... Asia is huge and has many countries with different customs... it is to me pretty cool when people ask about my heritage... I am Sicilian Italian, but many people ask if I am Latina because I guess I have an ethnic look and don't look Irish or Polish like most white people in my area do. Instead of taking it personally I just share my culture with people and they think it's cool. Don't worry- it isn't bad when people take interest in where your family is from specifically!

People told me I looked like Yoko Ono multiple times when I lived in a mostly white neighbourhood. That was annoying. But what I hate the most is; - When my best friend wears his shoes in my home - When my partner wears his shoes in my home - When my mom wears her shoes in my home and she's the one who taught me not to do that.

+chris1000 India is in Asia. The Indian Subcontinet is a REGION of ASIA meaning it's in asia and not on its own. Also "sub" means "under" or "secondary" to the thing on top meaning that the Indian Subcontinent is PART of Asia like Asia is spliy inder different "sub" or secondary continents and the Indian Subcontinent is one of them...therefore, Indians are Asians and India is in Asia

Persians have a holiday called Sizde Be Dar. It means 13Th go out. It's because they think that there's always bad luck on the 13th so they want to take out that bad luck by going out and having a picnic with their family and friends. This is during Nowruz holiday (New Year's). Everyone brings their own food and shares them with each other. It's amazing to see just how so many people can gather together and become one great, big happy family. In Persian culture, there's always a time when families go out and have picnics like that. So, this is why I love culture.

What i hate the most is that when asians use their chop sticks to stir that food and pick the piece they like....Like wtf? I dont want to eat ur spit :P Go pick a piece on the top and go for it. Dont dunk ur damn chop stick into the dish....or just use a different cutlery to pick ur food!
@aileean9418 жыл бұрын
+Shinji D pretty sure it's just that they don't have good table manners. I was brought up in a chinese family and was always taught to either use an unused chopstick or pick the piece in front of u. it's considered very rude to stir the food with ur used chopsticks unless u're like extremely close with the ppl u are eating and they dont mind.
@shinjid37058 жыл бұрын
+I ship It vietnamese and cambodiam ppl tend to do this. I have never seen chinese, hk or japanese people do this. Even if they are close relatives I still have a problem with it. Especially when we eat hot pot and many people are invited.
@aileean9418 жыл бұрын
Shinji D ah :0 i never knew that vietnamese and cambodian ppl tend to do this. i thought overall it was taught to be bad table manners... it's interesting to know that it's not. You guys don't use a ladle for hot pots? and i didn't mean close relatives, i meant family family like ur mom, dad, siblings. it's still kinda rude if u do it to close relatives cuz u dont know if they actually mind or not. maybe u should tell this to ur family next time that it bothers u?
@shinjid37058 жыл бұрын
I ship It Actually my parents are disgusted by that. We dont do that at home and I have been tought to use extra cutleries. The relatives from the older generations however, tend to do this and I really hated it. And yeah we use a ladle to pour the soup into our bowls but for the meat and vegetables we use chop sticks and normally at home we use and extra pair of chop sticks just so the soup remains clean for the next day. And no we cant tell that we are bothered by that because this is kind of part of their culture and many of them are immigrants and not born in europe like me. The older generations tend to keep their behaviours while the younger generations like my mom like to adapt. And she is in her 50s already so u can guess how old i am :D
@wlfshertz43628 жыл бұрын
Well I'm pretty sure only the Asians who doesn't have good table manners do that. Most of us don't, atleast not anyone that I know of.

...You do know we ask about what type of western each-other are too right? That's why so many of us can list off the countries our ancestors came from a hundred years ago. For example someone might say: "I'm a quarter Cherokee, one eighth Irish, Half Italian, and the rest is French, English and Dutch". It's not because you're Asian.
