I would add: well dressed women don't spend money on her fantasy life. She knows how to dress for the life she has. A lesson that I learned recently, in a very expensive way.

Say it louder❤❤❤. My thoughts exactly. If we all had loads of money we would look the part, but hey we are more focused on paying bills and enjoying life the best way we can. I really don’t care what people think of my dress sense. Trying to live up to other people ideals is what the problems are today.

Part of the problem with shoes is that the designers don’t make wide shoes! Not all women have narrow feet.

High heels and handbags were made for men not women. Most of your celebrities are inverted so men are women and women are men. The men that are women still have straight accross clavicles for the handbag to hang off (they fall off natural womens shoulders). Men have very long arms so to hide men to women celebs they wear high heels so it is not so obvious they are not women. Look up Angel Price on youtube. The man starts to come out in their forties, look at Brooke Shields, Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, Kate Midleton, etc

My mother taught me a lot about clothes particularly colours, fabrics and cuts. From her I resent to ask myself a question in a fitting room “Does this item improve my look/ appearance, and, if so, exactly how and why. It’s definitely saved me from making mistakes.
@figmo397
@figmo397 Жыл бұрын
I've been instinctively doing those practices for years! I grew up with a mother who was into trends and polyester, whereas my classmates mostly wore natural, high-quality fabrics. As soon as I moved away, I was able to dress myself in stuff that wasn't polyester or "trend of the year." I remember begging my mother to spend a whopping $10 on plain black and navy skirts in high school that lasted me 20 years. For a while Mom still liked buying clothes for me after I'd moved away. I'd let her as long as we were getting something I'd actually want to wear. Each trip she'd pick what I called "trendy item of the year" that she'd try to push on me, no matter how bad it looked on me. Often the way the item looked saved me from having to have it in my suitcase. Sometimes it was a "normal" item but in a weird color, such as the time she was pushing me to get neon pink pumps because she wanted me to wear neon pink to my cousin's wedding (I didn't). If I buy something "cheap," it's only "cheap" in the cost department, such as the time I found Levis on clearance for $1.85/pair. I bought two pairs in size 10 even though they were small at the time because a) I wanted incentive to lose weight and b) I couldn't resist that kind of a bargain. In that case I DID lose the weight. In fact, those jeans are now BIG on me! 🙂 I also like to keep one or two items in my wardrobe that aren't in my color palate. I call those "sick day clothes." If I want a day off, all I have to do is don a mustard yellow, peach, or olive green top (I'm a Summer). I had one boss insist on my taking the afternoon off and going home because the top made me look THAT sick! (Truth be told, I was actually just low on clean laundry that day....) OTOH, I refuse to buy shoes that don't fit. I think it's because my uncle was a VP at a major shoe company. When you grow up getting lectured on fit, you stick to it.
@kaunas88
@kaunas88 Жыл бұрын
One mistake that I occasionally used to commit was to buy something because it was on sale and "a good buy", but in the end it was a false economy because I hardly ever wore it, while a more expensive and better item I wore a lot of times, so in the end based on the number of wearings it was a lot cheaper and better value.

If you love neons, you can always wear them as accesories or 'accents'. You could wear black or white or navy, for instance, as the main base colour and wear a top in the neon as a 'splash '. You could also wear a neon colour belt or maybe a pair of shoes / sandals with a bag. Just keep the neon subtle and it can look chic.

I’m a shameless shoe person. I love all my shoes!!! Always have. I have finally listed some on my Poshmark that I no longer wear and haven’t for awhile due to lifestyle changes (not as much going out and dancing these past few years) but overall I really enjoy having a large variety of shoes to pick from. Plus not wearing out the same pairs all the time they actually last me a long long time. I live where there’s 4 seasons so it makes sense to me. I do need more storage for them but I feel like I always need more storage 😂 for everything anyways.

I am very pleased to say I actually do 99% of this. However, as I'm on a limited budget, certain fabrics aren't accessible to me. I do try thrift stories, and have very occasionally been lucky, but generally speaking it's hard to stretch my budget on every day wear. However, I do keep a few very well made and well fit suits and shirts for special occasions which call for them. I'd love if anyone has any advice for fabric that falls somewhere between lesser and more expensive; a nice middle ground would likely be doable for me (and I suspect other people, as well).

So true. Just take some time to learn what styles highlight your body type the best! Then just buy different colors and materials of the same thing. I also don't have enough space in my closet to have anything I don't absolutely love, so no waiting until it fits- return to the stores.

I have a petite hour glass figure. When I was young, I had no idea how to dress my figure and often wore styles meant for other figure types that made me look frumpy and awkward. As I gained more experience, I am able to spot what works and what to leave on the rack. I invest in tailoring pieces that have an overall silhouette that works for me. I have quite a collection of designer shoes - that I buy mostly on deep sale or on consignment. I keep them organized by color and those that have patterns. If I find I'm not wearing some shoes, I sell them on consignment. My shoes are very comfortable because they are well constructed so I can spend a whole day in my heels and not have sore feet at the end of the day. My philosophy is to wear solids and add pattern or a splash of color some where - blouse, shoes, belt, scarf, jewelry - for interest.

In defense of polyester, it can be made into quite nice fabric and put into really well constructed garments. The bad reputation comes from badly made cheap clothing. Wool, silk, and linen are only rarely used in cheap clothing and are almost always made into nicely made pieces. Cotton on the other hand, is basically the polyester of natural fiber. It can certainly be used for very nice things, and does make a nice fiber to wear. It can also be made very badly, and the pieces made from bad cotton will fall apart just as quickly as badly made polyester clothing. Worse, the fabric itself will fall apart if it’s made from the wrong type of cotton.

Some of my best fashion purchases have been 'aspiration' pieces which will fit perfectly only after I drop the extra weight......HONESTLY. They--for me--are a wonderful MOTIVATION to resume/maintain a Fitness Lifestyle. ****BUT**** I am aware of my particular body type, which parts of my body hold extra pounds---i.e.----where the weight will come off. Some of us hold weight in upper body; some lower body,....you get the idea. And I am...as this video teaches...also aware of which cuts/styles, colors, etc. suit my particular body type. So, while I must remain realistic and stay within those guidelines when buying an article that doesn't fit quite yet......taking the plunge CAN serve as a powerful catalyst for getting into shape.....especially when I have it hanging up in plain sight as a reminder. LOL

They look sharp and sophisticated, but I don't end up wearing them. Not the fitted shorter, not the long, not the mid, not the wool gabardine, not the wool knit. I realized that as much as I love them they don't work with my job or aesthetic. I'm 6 ft tall with a rectangle shape--maybe this has something to do with it-- and have finally realized or admitted ( LOL ) at 60 yrs old that I feel best in knits and more feminine styles. Not frilly though. But I am certain to always get sucked in to the chic look of a blazer.

I have a dismal success rate with shoes, I keep and wear only about a third of what I buy. I only buy high-quality, genuine leather, wide-toe box, generously-sized, styles and choose and break them in as carefully as I can, but it seems like there are always problems once I try walking in them for more than a few minutes. Something ends up pinching or rubbing somewhere, often only in one shoe where there might be a slight thickening of a strap, stitching flaw, etc. High heels (3 inches or more) and pointed toes I never could even consider. My feet are Average, or C width, but these pointed-toe styles shoes are only half the width of my toes! Shoe manufacturers make them super-narrow to save money on the leather and for no other reason, most barely qualify as A width, they are more like a AA or AAA and nowhere near the B width they claim. It’s not, as they claim, to “fit more women” or “look more elegant”, it’s all about maximizing their profits.

I had about 20 pr. of shoes when I was working in an office before working from home. They always looked brand new and clean since I could rotate them. My coworker wore the same pr of beige low heeled shoes EVERYDAY for years no matter what she wore. They really got sloppy looking and needed to be cleaned. Now that I'm working from home, I did a brutal clearing out of not just shoes but my entire wardrobe since I was going to retire. I gave my sister 5 skirts that she could take to her consignment store to get some cash. And BTW I am convinced that shoe styles are made by men who wear comfortable footwear while raking in lots of money from women who are in PAIN!! Those models showing off ridiculous shoes take them off as soon as they hear: "CUT".

Love your eye make-up. May I ask how you did the eyeliner - above the lashes or under them in the waterline ? Thank you

I grew up with home made clothes and school uniforms. When I went to work, I bought my own clothes, what I wanted. I bought good quality clothes, natural fibers, no polyester. I always bought good shoes…leather….no plastic, same for purses. I had pieces that lasted years, and remained looking stylish. I’d buy new items and mixed pieces. That’s was 55 years ago. I still follow that practice. Don’t follow fads.

I so want to know where I can get narrow shoes...nothing out there comes A or AA width...always slipping off, or I must wear thick socks always🙄. Plus I am size 11 so it's a double whammy. No one makes size 11 and No one makes narrow enough shoes...😣

Good for you love. You've ticked all the boxes correctly. I do not own neon or bright colors, it's clownish. In my orb we don't wear such things. While I do have extensive shoes, I don't buy them anymore because I now have shoes for every occasion on the planet, If I should buy a new pair of heels I discard my oldest pair in that category.. I do wear prints BUT, if the shirt is printed I wear solid color slacks. If my slacks are printed (l like lily pulitzer patterns) I wear a solid color shirt. I'm very conservative with my makeup and jewelry in the daytime. But if I'm going out to dinner or a fundraiser I will put on a little bit more. At upscale restaurants my hair is always in an up fashion. If friend's and I are just grabbing a light lunch bite, I'll wear it down or in a low ponytail with a beautiful ribbon or scarf around my ponytail. We are firm believers of dressing appropriate for the occasion. Whatever your life's occasions are assess them and dress for them appropriately. No stilettos while lounging by the pool 😁

I have bought things that I needed to slim down to wear. Problem is, that although I did slim down, it doesn't look good anyway. If I had weighed 10lbs less when I tried it on, I wouldn't have bought it. Doubly frustrating.

What I usually did I bought things that were bigger, thinking I can wear it when I gain weight, so I had too many oversized clothes that never fit me.

I have no objection to any of your points, but I really hate the clothes displayed behind you, especially double breasted brass buttons. There's got to be something less boring that's classic. Also, the clip of the denim jacket under a proper overcoat illustrates why they are useless. Denim jackets are not warm enough when it's cold, and not cool enough when it's hot, just useless.

The biggest issue shows have gotten more narrow. My mother had an old pair of dress shoes and they were bigger than the current shoes and she had reaĺly narrow feet. Her shoes currently are wide width depending on the brand. So try a width up and compare.

I have a green dress much the same colour as Catherine's and I think it's more of a bright apple than a neon. It's one of the few non- natural fabric garments I have. Sometimes I wonder if it's my love of natural fibres that has made me feel 'frumpy'? Or maybe just the 'Viking' hair which will never ever be polished :)

They do not make shoes for those with narrow feet either. We used to have a choice of widths. Now it’s either medium or wide. The all fall off my feet

When you wear a size 3 woman's shoe (yes, size 3) it's almost impossible to find comfortable shoes outside the kid's department and they're neither comfortable for adult feet nor do they last. I've ordered online from companies in the UK but the sizing is tricky and expensive if they need to be returned.

@@denisem9407 that’s tough. I’m a size 4 US and it’s really hard to find adult heels. I really don’t have a problem with casual shoes. I where adidas, Uggs, Birkenstocks, Doc Martens, Teva and even my Hunter Rain Boots all in children’s sizes. But dress shoes are hard to find.

I appreciate the work done here advising, but I have a hard time with the image of the denim jacket under the camel coat. The denim jacket in its basic form is as hideous as a worker boot. I expected from a fashion expert an image of a styled denim jacket and now I expect a full video on different styles of denim jackets. Please, i cannot unsee what I saw and it's bad.

I am a petite woman with a large chest. Stuck with what my boobs fit into. No button-up blouses, blazers, jackets, dresses. The shapeless, baby-doll silhouette that has predominated the last two decades is about as unflattering a look as can be imagined for my body type. To have anything besides oversized cotton shirts in my repertoire, I’d need serious tailoring. So…back to money. And time. And a good tailor, if you can find one. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Please, all this well dressed community, don't shove away polyester and other synthetics. They are NECESSARY for workout clothing, for hiking, skiing and a ton of other activities that require us to stay dry. And a lot of knitted fabrics, like thicker bodycon dresses or turtlenecks are also amazing with a blend of a synthetic polymer

I respectively disagree. I know rich people that buy cheap clothes. I think Neon is a classic color. I love color. So called classic pieces are almost unaffordable and I am allergic to wool. I guess what I'm saying is it's much harder to shop online and in person. I do agree with if it does not fit, send it back promptly. I agree on the shoes. Thanks for sharing some good ideas.
