I programmed a minesweeper game back in college, and yeah, the way I did it was to generate the mines on the first click and set that box to have no mine on it to prevent blowing up on the very first click. Before I added that little bit it was very possible to not make it past the first click if I generated the mines before. I would assume the "official" versions do something similar since I don't recall ever losing on first turn

I used to be very confused by this game, but the rules are actually simple, I am not a native speaker, so I don't think I will be able to explain this (mostly because I don't know the terminology for things in-game), but you can find rules online pretty easily. It's actually a very fun game, once you get the hang of it:)
