Way I figure it, those of us who don't live in those places where everything is available to buy, often have the upper hand over the Canadian basements when it comes to sun. I can tell you this much, I don't need to worry about plants on the north-east side of my place not getting enough sun, and I don't need to worry about frosts in the wintertime. Also, the green thumb thing is correct. My mother is like this. She can't give any useful tips, because she just does things naturally that work. It's like cooking. You can learn to follow a recipe, but some people just have a magic touch, and some can burn water. It is what it is.

"it's OK to throw away plants" you know, i had a conversation about this with someone and they felt like "well, I paid X for it and I don't want to just throw it out." This is a plant that is chronically plagued by spider mites and mealy bugs. So I asked them "how much have you spent in treating it over the past year?" Turns out it was more than the plant cost by almost double. And so, yes, it is definitely OK to throw them out.

There are some plant creators that just STRESS ME TF OUT with how many plants they have! And how many plants they have that “arent doing well” or “need some help” and they still get more! How can you even enjoy the hobby if you aren’t appreciating the plants you already have? Nothing has made me love my plants more than getting rid of OVER HALF of them. used to have over 100, I now have about 30 potted plants and a lot of propagations. And I’m having a grand time. Furthermore since making this change I have barely had the urge to buy new plants in store, I just look at them. I always know that I can get any plant I want at any point in my life. When I have a bigger house and the time is right, I can order any plant that I want. There will always be another chance. 9:41

Haahahahaha I about fell over at the Croton comment. I have a "magical window" that makes it so Crotons "indoors" thrive for me. My giant plant rack in my bedoom is nothing but crotons and I don't own a humidifier. From Fall thru Winter I get intense perfect croton loving light, they live in plastic liner planters. Every four days like clockwork I lift one up them a bit to see if they need water and I keep a watering can room temp on the ready for these divas. Come late Spring - Summer they get plant lights for 3 months. The complete opposite of how you think it would be and I live in the U.S. / Chicago area. I have no jungle, no waterfall, no greenhouse, or sunroom or IKEA cabinet or huidity tent. At this point my window might be a Croton portal but I have never had a croton die on me. I have a rare croton thumb but cannot keep a Ddieffenbacia alive for the life of me! LOL!!!

You are a vixen! I love what you said and have been guilty of some of your observations, like: hoarding (just today a friend told me that the amount of plants I have are an indication that my Bi-polar disorder is acting up), trying a plant or two that don't belong in a home, not throwing away "bad" plants, and a couple of others. I have always had a green thumb though. I do however have some grow lights to keep some of my plants happy, if I don't they will not talk to me during our therapy sessions. On another subject; why do people call themselves and others "Girlies? I'm 66 and have no idea what anyone is talking about these days.

Very entertaining and very real - I like that! All hobbies/everything require KSA's, like driving, parenting, and evening growing plants. I'll add that seeing a psychologist is an annual requirement like seeing a dentist or primary care doctor - health check-ups are non-negotiable.

This video is fantastic! Speaking truth, always. Regarding soil, I agree so strongly! Run of the mill bag from a box-store, we have a favourite brand. We also keep Perlite, Hydroton, and Sphagnum Moss around for various reasons. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Survival of the fittest around here. Plants either adapt to the neglect I provide or they die and get tossed!

I soo agree…. Not everything can grow indoors in every house Plants can make people need therapy….. If theres too many of them 😅 The plants shouldn’t be the “flex” enjoying growing them should be 🌸 I disagree on Calatheas though… I have had some for 3 years and counting But yes….. I do agree… some plants should be treated more as temporary Currently learning to not propagate plants when I prune them… prunings can be composted, whos benefit am I propagating for? Not mine, I enjoy growing, not selling 😉. Reclaiming the time energy and space all those propagations take, its the best Throwing away a healthy plant… I still cannot 😅 I have some plants in the cococoir they were in since I got them and they do well… However, some plants are more sensitive to root rot and in the colder climates in winter something like cococoir will stay wet/moist for weeks. For those plants I do like to add some bark(or cocohusk) and perlite and that does seem to help. Keeping it simple is often good enough to make plants happy 😊 We dont need green thumbs. Just the right information about light, temperature, watering (and perhaps soil and nutrients) 🌱🌸 “Thrive” made me think of another one: “living its best life” How can a plant live its best life on the other end of the world in a pot in artificial light!? They live their best lives where they came from… out in the wild But its still nice to grow them indoors at the other end of the world 🩷

I want to add a few of my own - There are collections that are b o r i n g, like different anthuriums with heart shape leaves which all look the same. Some verigated plants look sick or like bleach spilled on them. For example, frydek. In Pharrell universe they would have considered defected and their price would be less than the original.
@unfilthyАй бұрын
The variegation thing is so true. I'm new to plant care, and I was shocked to find so many of the more "prestigious" plants looked sick. Especially the ones that are supposed to be white but often really aren't. Don't get me wrong, some of them are very pretty, and if someone prefers one look over another, that's their business, but I generally tend to prefer my plants green.

It is the perfect mix of expertise salt and peppered with the right amount of humor to keep it rolling along. I was (safely!) driving down the road and watching this roaring with laughter but also nodding my head yes yes I agree. In particular with yes there are green thumbs who are just naturals and also yes some plants simply want to be outdoors they will never "thrive(ha!)" indoors. Also from a previous video I finally moved some plants from my unglazed terra cotta pots! I am new to houseplants and everything you read online goes on and on about how all beginners should use terra Cotta which is simply not true. It is only true if you are an overwater-er which not everyone is. I hope that my plants will start "thriving" 😂 now that I have switched to ceramic per your advice. Oh Man dude, Handsome, you had me chuckling here and there. Yes, Good video. However, I don't believe people are BORN with green thumbs. I do believe as you've said, paying attention to the plants, that's applying ones self to CARE OF PLANTS. Anyone can do it even THE BLACK THUMB. Key is CARE, LEARNING, PAYING ATTENTION, TRIAL. All of which you have said. So BORN WITH GREEN THUMB is out the window for me. Sir, Sir, as good as you speak that English why when you said TRIVE I got lost and was wondering if you were saying TRIBE. Come on now, throw that tongue in there for that TH. THRIVE. It wasn't until you put the word up on the screen that I then knew what you were wanting to say. You got to put the tongue into the TH Man. Yes, entertaining, Yes, informational, Yes, funny quite a bit. It's the way you say things and the way you express what you are saying. Meat to chomp on. Thank you and HAPPY PLANT'N!

I feel called out on the plants as therapy thing 😂 I'm a fancy soil girly, but I'm running low and i CANNOT be bothered with the effort or expense of topping up. I do have a big ole block of coir though 🤔
@TheMillennialPlantDadАй бұрын
Perhaps give the cococoir a go ? Start off with your more moisture loving plants first or pair with terracotta because I do recall you live in a gloomy climate, northern UK or there about

I think you’re a op🤣🤣 JK I am just addicted to plants with beautiful leaves , if I could grow okra, and butternut squash inside year round inside I would. ❤

I’m new to the plant hobby. What is youtube trying to tell me 😂

I use the exact same soil for all my plants cause I refuse to have 17 soil mixes on hand. If a plant can't survive in it, it's not meant for this house.
