When my babies had coughs, I didn’t like using antibiotics which were not usually effective anyway. I rubbed Vicks on their chests, back, and soles of their feet, but young babies’ skin is sensitive to Vicks, so I first used a layer of Vaseline, then rubbed the Vicks over it. It worked. It was also effective in helping to gently insert rectal thermometers which were widely used with children years ago.

I thought I needed to use other skin barrier healing products like Ectoin, Ceramides, Panthenol, etc. but they are not reasonably priced for me. But when I tried using petrolatum, my skin was healed. If you have ever heard the phrase “black don’t crack” this is a MAJOR reason why. Black folks have been using Vaseline as skin care for generations. I’m in my 50’s and in the winter I’ll still use a combination of baby oil & Vaseline after I get out of the shower instead of lotion. One other tip that they left out is that it’s good in cold climates to help protect your face against the cold wind. It’s basically the same idea that Eskimo’s used when applying animal fat to their skin.

I'm white, and my whole family has been using Vaseline for their regular skin care routine for generations. Black don't crack because of the thicker dermis layer of their skin and the fact that they have about twice as much melanin in their skin to protect them from photoaging.

I have an older friend that had a grandson born with a severe form of Ichthyosis. The skin was so thick around his eyes that the lids could not close. They had to coat his eyeballs with Vaseline for weeks until they were able to kind of manage the skin around his eyes. I think they had to use Vaseline everywhere for him, but the eyes is what stood out to me because even with covers they would have dried out and he would have been blind if they could not have kept the corneas moist.

I just started slugging a few weeks ago. My face and eye area has become very dry and flaky. I have an autoimmune disorder that has worsened my skin. Using good moisturizer such as Cerave, then seal with Aquaphor has been a miracle. My niece’s half sister became critically ill and swelled so bad her skin ruptured and tore in numerous areas. I recommended Vaseline dressings. Apply liberal layers and wrap gently with dressings to absorb the fluid leaking out of her skin. It healed her skin up within 3 weeks. Her family was very appreciative.

I have an antibacterial liquid soap that's a hospital brand that I discovered can be bought on Amazon. I clean these occasional scratches with it but still have that itching afterward. One day, I tried pitting Vaseline on the scratch after cleaning it well with antimicrobial soap, and the itch instantly goes away. The scratch is healed fast within just a few days. I also went a long time without wearing earrings in my pierced ears. I found it difficult to put them in. I made sure they were clean and used a q-tip and put Vaseline in the post of the earring and slipped it in to my ear and it helped open it back up and healed it from my first attempt without Vaseline. It worked like a dream. I love this video. I will make more use of it from now on!

I think that genetics is probably the most important factor for how one's appearance changes with age. My parents and my grandparents were always being told that they looked much younger than their age. On a flight to Hawaii when my maternal grandmother was in her early 70s, she was sitting next to a friend of hers who was in her late 60s and was sleeping, the flight attendant asked my grandmother in a whisper what she wanted for her meal and then asked her if she should bring something for her mother since she didn't want to wake her up. My grandmother's friend bolted upright and exclaimed, "I'm not her mother!" Two months before my 57th birthday, I was visiting some friends of mine from college to attend their daughter's wedding. It was the first time I met their daughter's fiance'. He was sitting next to me at dinner, and said that before he had heard me talking to his fiancee's parents about our college days during dinner, he had thought I was one of her brothers' friends and her brothers were in their early 30s. When I announced my early retirement at work when I was 57, several of my co-workers who were in their mid-30s to early 40s told me I was way too young to retire. I replied that it was a little early, but not unheard of. I asked them how old do you think I am. They said they thought I was about their age. They were flabbergasted when I told them I was 57 so I was closer to their parents ages than to their age. My only skin care routine has been to wash my face with soap and water, use hydrogen peroxide on the occasional pimple, and use SPF 100 sunscreen on all exposed skin because my very fair skin burns so easily.

Good information! I’m a huge proponent of Castor Oil though. I’ve had amazing results and would love to hear your thoughts regarding Castor Oil as well

I just recently started using it on my armpits. It works extremely well. I figured it out because I would go on vacation and forget to bring my deodorant and would use lotion instead. Then I thought a week ago that instead of using deodorant, why not use Vaseline? It's the best thing I've ever done. My armpits are not irritated, and I feel super comfortable.

In my culture this was a staple, my great grandmothers swore by this in my household to this day and I'm 52

It got me through accutane! No one even knew I was on it because my face wasn’t peeling. At night I mixed it with my most moisturizing moisture to make it spread easier on my face and in the morning my face wasn’t peeling. I would use just my moisturizer in the daytime and vaseline on my lips no peeling, redness, nothing. People complimented my skin constantly. I had other side effects but not peeling!

I used cerave healing ointment on my daughter for diaper rash and it worked faster and better than diaper rash cream.

I used it on my babies and young children as protection against sand flies. The sand fly urine didn’t get through to their skin to irritate. Also I believe that baby oil is a similar product and used that for protection against mosquitoes.

Thank you for this! I have for years thought that Vaseline was bad for your skin 🤷🏻♀️

Thank you. My skin doctor told me, after the 2 weeks treatment to eradicate sun-spots, to apply vaseline. I didn’t believe him…. Now, I will. Blessings, Melody, Australia.😊

I clicked on your post for the first time wondering if you knew my favorite hack for Vaseline. Since you’re dermatologists, you stayed in your field of expertise. BUT Vaseline is also good for “healing” furniture. My mother taught me this remedy and it’s never failed. If a piece of finished wood furniture gets a white water mark, smear it with a coat of Vaseline and leave it on for 24 hours. Then, wipe it off with a soft cloth, and VOILA!!! the white mark vanishes and your furniture’s finish is restored.

Thank you for this video! I started using vaseline about 2 years ago, then switched to aquaphor about 1 year ago. My jaw line and neck are SUPER reactive even to the most gentle, basic lotions (eventhough they work on my face). But I needed something for dry skin on those areas and basically as a last resort I tried vaseline and I've never stopped! I'm 47, have combo oily skin and its never looked better. But lately I've heard "scary" things about petroleum products and I was questioning my routine. So, thanks for the reassurance!

I love Vaseline and I love how versatile it is. However, I once bought a jar from a discount store, and it smelled horrible. The chemical smell was super strong. I will only buy store brands from known stores from now on. For lips and face I like the texture of the cerave ointment a bit better.

I totally agree! It's simple and has been around long enough to be well-tested in the best way possible.

I use it in mainly in the winter to moisturize my nails. The longer ones are given a layer on the top and the underside while the shorter ones are moisturized on the edge. A Qtip helps a great deal for this task.

For slugging I use a layer of zinc oxide and then put a layer of Vaseline over it.

You can also use it on your fingertip when you are smoothing out the silicone bead you just put around your sink. The silicone won't stick to your finger and wipes off easily with a paper towel.

One more thing Vaseline works wonder on - hemorrhoid! Yes it works thousand times better than the expensive hemorrhoid creams your doctor prescribe to you or you buy over the counter 😄

What does it do to the hemorroids?Does it shrink them? Or just calms the pain/itch?

I got atopic eczema and (severe) psoriasis as a small child. Now, more than 50 years later, I have quite a lot of experience in what works and not. I LOVE petrolatum, but since I easily get very bad itching (as in atopic itching in psoriatic skin) and petrolatum is a bit too heavy, to put it nicely. What I do, is that I heat the petrolatum and mix 1 part petrolatum and one part liquid petrolatum (right word in English?). I slowly heat it until I can mix the petroleum jelly with the liquid petroleum and I have a wooooonderful light ointment!!! You can just mix them cold, but it is better to heat it for a perfect homogenous ointment!!! Super simple, super wonderful and saves me from having to apply ointment all the time. ❤❤❤

Question: Factor 50 sunscreen is my everyday essential routine. Should I layer vaseline on top or below?

You guys are the most enjoyable people to watch! I also love Vaseline! Question for you though.. Cereve has a product call Cereve Healing Ointment. It is mostly comprised of petrolatum but has other ingredients as well such as hyaluronic acid and ceramides. Do you think there is much of a difference between these two products when it comes to benefits for slugging or under the eyes ??? I will use it since i have it but I'm not sure it is worth the extra money for the additional ingredients! Thank you!! :)

As a child, Mom used it as a heat protectant for my hair. She also used it on my skin. Now that I’m an adult, I’ve used it for the past thirty years as a makeup remover and lip cream. I use one mixed with cocoa butter.

My Vaseline hack is as an mascara remover. I put it on a cotton pad, leave flat on my eyes while it is closed then small pinch to massage it off. Then I repeat as often as Vaseline layer allows and to remove the gunk leftover. It also moisturizes the eyes for the double cleanse.
