Jules is definitely a gem with his pauses at the end of the episodes to talk about mental health and well-being. What makes it even more awesome is it's not some trend, because I don't know of other KZbinrs who do this as well. Kindness is often forgotten in the rushes and stresses of life. It's refreshing to see it on display in those times that we do.

These games were some of the best of our childhood, they were simpler times back then. However, we have been spoiled by a lot of technological and gameplay innovations and advances over the years, and if we go back to these games now we will find that they have aged rather poorly. We look fondly at them and they have a special place in our hearts for sure, but it's best that they stay there only, otherwise we'd ruin our memories of them. Ikr. Jules is a perfect example of what actual positivity and encouragement is. Or people who get mad at people who don't put on a fake smile for the toxic persons comfort. Like, how dare you have an emotion that I don't feel comfortable with?! Real positive thinking isn't ignoring the bad or sneering at people who are going through a hard time. It's being kind, compassionate and acknowledging that the world can be dark but with help, kindness and hope you can find a light in the dark.

I have to add a game that you missed, my friend. Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64. The graphics and control was mind blowing when it came out. Playing it on the Super Mario All Stars on the Switch, and the camera and control does not stand up. Especially when Sunshine and Galaxy play so much better on the same game.

Man Rayman was so hard. I remember breaking a controller fighting the space viking lady. It took me days to outrun the shadow Rayman too.

How's about "Weapons that don't belong in the game that they're in"?
@BlakeTheDrake3 жыл бұрын
Umm... gonna have to throw your words back at you, Jules, and ask if you were playing the same X-Com: UFO Defense as I was. Not that it was (or is) a perfect experience by a long shot, the bit about the clunky interface and aliens bombarding you with attacks from beyond your sight-range is entirely accurate. The interface in particular, both in the tactical combat and strategical sessions, looks more like a spreadsheet with illusions of grandeur when viewed with modern eyes. But 'ultra-difficult'? Seriously? I pushed through that game as a kid, without any access to the internet - reaching Mars and eradicating the Alien threat on my first game. Took a fair bit of save-scumming, of course, but that's really part of the X-Com experience IMO! The game just isn't that hard, strategically or tactically - sure, the aliens will take potshots at you from beyond your reach, but they'll whiff just as often as YOU do, and while there are some really unbalanced weapons and abilities in the game, you can wield most of them yourself once you've done the research. The START of the game is pretty damn rough, of course, but that's the case for every XCOM-style game ever - you're basically expected to go through a few stables of green recruits before you wind up with a reliable team who've proven themselves by surviving a few engagements. Hardly worth singling the original UFO Defense out for that! Is it possible that you're getting the first game mixed up with its sequel, 'Terror from the Deep'? Because THAT one is ALL THAT and SO MUCH MORE! Absolutely brutal, sadistic difficulty, which ramps up faster than your researchers can keep up, challenging you harshly in both the strategic and tactical view, being basically designed as a challenge for those who have already mastered UFO Defense. I never managed to finish THAT one as a kid, though that was in part due to the rather egregious and subtle bugs it was tainted with, causing certain vital research-options NECESSARY FOR FINISHING THE GAME to fail to appear if you researched the wrong things in the wrong order. Or sometimes just because they felt like it. But even trying it again as a grown-up, using a fan-made patch to fix all the bugs and issues, I STILL wound up giving up on it due to the absolutely bullshit levels of difficulty it gradually ramps up to. When I encountered THREE rocket-launcher-armed T-Rexes in a single mission - a Cruise-Ship Defense, with tons of narrow corridors and blind corners - each of them capable of wiping out half my team in a single shot, I eventually just gave up and went off to play something else. :-\ So yeah - X-Com: TFTD definitely fits the bill here, but the original? Not so much.

10 Games where one character ruins the whole experience

Loved the original X-COM, but what makes it unplayable to me nowadays is the tedium of having to equip your characters properly before every single battle. Luckily mods exist that fix that, and there's the especially excellent OpenXcom project that smooths out so many of the rough edges and allows you to tweak the rules to your heart's content. I also really recommend Xenonauts which is extremely similar in gameplay, but the setting is transposed in the the Cold War during the 1970s. Different research tree too. It also has some new rules that smooth over tedious tasks, i.e. you can opt to air-strike UFO crashes for most of the profit instead of having to send a team out for every single piddly little UFO.

I think older games were so hard on purpose as the devs were getting money from mags for guides and cheats
@jeltevl88682 жыл бұрын
the original legend off zelda is a prime example off that. The final dungeon in that game is so convoluted and hard that if its your first playthrough its pretty impossible to beat. Magazines covered the way to beat that dungeon. But here is the thing: even tho legend off zelda was released in europe those mags where not. Wich ended in that situation that I could never beat that final dungeon till walkthroughs started popping up on the internet.

Difficulty in games was mainly to make the game "longer" The limits in terms of system memory and funding for game development time made making actual long games quite difficult. So in order for people to actually put a decent amount of time into the game, they upped the difficulty. Megaman and TMNT are prime examples of this

Morrowind is challenging when you first start, but do a little grinding to level up, and it is incredible. And no game has ever had a better magic system. It is so versatile, and you can do so much with it, that you really feel like a wizard.

When he starts bitching about aliens in X-com having better eyesight at night (which is a declared feature) and doesn't even mention stuff like aliens being able to mind control your crew without ever seeing them - you can tell he's got no clue what's actually wrong with it and never was good enough to get to the real problems...

I played XCOM; UFO Defense after Terror from The Deep. I'd found UFO Defense at a local used bookstore. I rather liked it. As for aliens having better weapons, that's the point. They have advanced tech. Pop some smoke when you first start a mission to provide your squad with some concealment & then branch out so you don't bunch up. I thought everyone used the ship as cover, like the landing gear. (Fins too when you get the excellent flying armor.)

I feel ya on Golden Eye and Tony Hawk, I tried to go back to it and just couldn't do it. Also with Parappa that's very true, as a musician it's so frustratingly off beat that it's unplayable.
