In this video I'm reviewing this $8 Walmart Zippo that I have been using as my every day carry (EDC) for the past three months with a Chinese made rubber gasket on the bottom of the insert instead of the factory felt pad.

I stumbled across the rubber gaskets on Aliexpress one day and just figured might as well try them out. They were really cheap through them. I have a few other Walmart blister pack Zippos in my collection as well. Some of the designs are pretty good.

Walmart zippos are great, you’re not as attached to it, you can give them out as gifts and if you loose it, you can always get another one. It’s a zippo without a box. That’s it.

I have 2 Chinese rubber ones. Had them for over 2 years & always transfer them to my "carry/in use" zippo & have had zero problems. Got a couple more, they're plastic, don't fit as well & don't seal as they are warped. Thought "fine, I've got dodgy ones. It happens". Ordered more from a different place, different maker, still warped. Think I'll stick to my rubber ones.

The hinge is where it leaks from. Its always a good idea to store a zippo wrapped in a small plastic bag. This stops vapour evaporation. A zippo will normally last a few days without wrapping but if you wrap in a plastic bag it can last over a month.

Definitely correct, that they leak from the hinge as well as from the bottom. I use my Zippo throughout the day, every day. I just keep it in a leather pouch. I only refuel once a week still and haven't run dry yet. Also, I no longer have one of these gaskets in it. Just original felt pad from the factory. Basically, I was just trying them out to see how they were. They're not really worth it. Thank you for commenting.

Collected Zippos for years, just came across those gaskets & picked up a pack. I use a torch insert in my carry Zippos because I like them better for my cigars but still use the original inserts in my workshop. I'm anxious to see how these gaskets help.

I have carried one for years, and its hard to tell when they are going to run out of fluid. But what you can do is get an old eye drop bottle and fill it with lighter fluid and you can carry it in your pocket, that way you always have fluid with you. Just a tip.

i never liked the stability of the hinges in my very different zippos from 30 years for 30 years - and if you use them a lot in blue collar environments - its getting worser motivated by a "zippo-fan-site" i evolved from pressing the hinges to extracting the "bolt" [hope its the correct name] i replaced them with steel nails - about the size of the cardboard-pins i used to extract the bolt - the original zippo-bolts do cover the outer hinges just half with the nail and short rounding of the cutted edges the hinges get real stability for the additional bottom plate i experimented with several materials inkluding ntb - nitril-butadien-kautschuk my solution were these red plastic covers you use top of outdoor pipes and cables to prevent damage from shovelwork a little bit work with a dremel - 20 minutes for 4 covers including drilling the opening for the flint-tube optical not industrial perfect - but perfect enough for me
@zippolyonsden1623
@zippolyonsden1623 9 ай бұрын
I agree with not liking Zippo hinge stability. I've some that date back to the 1940s and 1950s that have better hinges than the modern ones. I also have used nails to replace the hinge pin on a couple of my vintage Zippos. Zippo will replace hinges, though, if sent in to their repair clinic in Bradford. I've done that a couple times with older ones.

@@zippolyonsden1623 thanks -i was very anxious to break the hinges and widened them very carefully & slow after i aligned them - the right angle of the hinges is still something i like to understand and how it corresponds with the closing plate in the head section which you can bow a bit ... as a german i´m convinced there is nothing more effective than add "front plate armour" :) ... until you sunk in the mud
@zippolyonsden1623
@zippolyonsden1623 9 ай бұрын
@zachariasobenauf1895 talking about sinking in mud. Have you gotten one of the Zorro lighters that is machined entirely of brass? The hinges on those are actually part of the case itself, not an extra welded on part. They even have a small groove carved along the opening of the bottom case, where one puts the insert that fits a little rubber ring to help prevent fuel evaporation. They're a little on the heavier side as well. I really like them. Would be cool if Zorro made a solid copper one.

Those gaskets don’t shrink. The lighter fluid makes them brittle and they break into multiple pieces.

I didn't experience that while I was using them. I mainly just didn't like them and didn't see much of a difference in fuel retention compared to just using a felt pad. @zippolyonsden1623

One of the main reasons is that these lighters work primarily on fumes. Letting it dry out completely causes the wick to burn away faster, basically. Keeping the lighter full helps to prolong the life of the wick. This has been my experience with Zippos.
