Wow, what an great piece of hardware from 2008! It's an interesting precursor to the Raspberry Pi and BeagleBone. It's also a great demonstration of Puppy Linux, although choosing Compcat Flash over SD seems like an odd choice. Still, this is really cool. I love the connection to DC and solar. I don't get it... why wouldn't you just get a laptop? And maybe normal desktops in 1990 used an avg of 200wats but with today's CUP CL states and 90gold PSUs even my computer with 2 GTX 780s draws less than 20wats at idle.
@FeralSparky11 жыл бұрын
Yeah, 20wats at idle is much higher then 8wats under full load.

***** Even still that's when little those with atom cpu computers were kind of a thing and they took just as much power with better specs. And then people woke up.
@FeralSparky11 жыл бұрын
D Smith True enough. The main pc I use is a Gen 1 Acer aspire one Netbook aoa150 being used as an HTPC hooked up to my HD TV for movies and music. And it uses something like 30 watts of power.
@woottanggang11 жыл бұрын
Thomas Gregoire Another thing people have to understand less power usage = less computing power. Every year chips get smaller and faster and use less power. Every watt of power to a computer today goes 5 times further then 5 years ago (with current gen hardware) If someone were to say today my new computer uses 10 times less power then your new computer, the "power saving" computer would be a slow piece of shit. unless you got chips from the future you are doing nothing but sacrificing speed for power usage. The size of the PC alone should say it all 5 years ago chips were 5 times larger then they are today.
@neowales26511 жыл бұрын
I highly doubt your computer uses 20 watts at idle. Just one GTX 780 uses 30watts at idle just for the card. Even with a modern Haswell CPU and half decent motherboard, with two GTX780 installed your looking at a min 100watts. Just a plain Haswell system with no graphics card runs min of 35watts at idle. Graphics cards use loads when idle, although some AMD cards can switch themselves off when monitor goes to sleep. I think an 8 watt PC is impressive.

@kittylovermybut10 жыл бұрын
The pi is extremely cheap, idk what your talking about. And even if your P4 blew it away, how much energy does the P4 use in comparison to the PI? Or for that matter how much did you pay for it originally? How much larger is it than the PI? Look at all the disatvantages the P4 has, its too old too hold its own against the PI. Besides, where looking at the PI from an economic standpoint, not a preformance one. If people needed preformance in a small package, an Intel NUC would destroy the P4, and its 10x smaller. Don't you understand why this exists?

I really like the idea. Being the avid gamer/computer builder that I am, I find this to be a really good invention with plenty of practical uses. Though it does have major drawbacks, such as the hard drive space. You can't do anything anymore these days with less than a gigabyte. It just simply wont work. And 8 watts wouldn't be enough to power a modern anything so that brings the question what kind of processor and graphics chip it's using. Awesome invention, needs refining.

We had original ideas like this in the 80's and 90's, it was called the personal computer such as the Amiga, Sinclair, Amstrad, MSX, Commodore, Atari ST etc.. all were small and portable and only needed todays tech inside them to be just as powerful as a modern PC/MAC. They all carried an OS on ROM, so we haven't moved forward, we're moving backwards. =] NB in 1992, the Amiga 1200 was the first home computer to have 32Bit colour (16.8 million colour pallet). owned.

Oh man, all I can think is how if you had one of those little guys now, and with something similar to the 1tb drive I have that's roughly that same size but a lot thinner, you could sync it to like something sorta like glasses with an overlay for the monitor, you could have a little arm-wristlet with the keyboard in it (more like a gauntlet than a wristlet) and in the part over the wrist, there could be a laser reader that lets you use the back of your non-dominant hand as a mouse.

Mikalhvi da8055ofdub@gmail if your interested, not really sure we could make much money off of this idea but im sure it would still be cool to do and it prob wont cost much(i'll pay for whats needed if anything will need to be payed for). I'll get some research on other low wattage boards and chips or something of the like that can run something like win 8 or 10 even, i'm thinking nano-itx or mini-itx but i'd have to be careful with the wattage since we're talking on-person use. amazing how this ancient piece of tech has sparked such an idea lol

***** Hello. To add to the discution here are some reasons why the little PC is worse than a laptop. Reasons: 1 You need to carry a monitor, keyboard and a mouse with you. 2 You need to carry a VGA and an AC to DC convertor. 3 If you want it to work on a battery you will have to make a custom cable and carry around a battery wich defeats the point in this being portable 4 It has up to 750x smaller storage and everything else is really bad (the GPU, CPU, RAM 5 It has only 8 W of power wich means it will not be able to power up at least one USB port fully wich limites the expandability of this qite a lot A plus for it is that because of the power consumption it may be able to run up to 7 or 8 hours on a modern Li-ion battery. You said: ,, Also the factor of a battery being able to directly connect to it without any inverter, saving you a bit of cash.'' A laptop is powered much in the same way as this little PC. They both have an AC to DC convertor (inverter), and the battery is pluged in directly since it outputs DC and the laptop accepts DC. You also said: ,,this uses only 8w'' keep in mind that a monitor needs power too. A monitor if not eco takes 20 to 25 W, a (good) eco monitor takes 10 to 15W. I am comparing this to my laptop from 2005 (I'm using it to write this message) Please excuse any spelling mistakes, I'm from the Czech Republic. P.S. This is not an angry comment.

I'd say it's kind of a smart tv box, but it's not really one; it remains the same thing if you just plugged your computer on your TV

This video was made in 2008. At the time this was a pretty cool idea.

I can't even remember there being netbooks in 2008, or at least, they were still basically laptops, just really really slow laptops. Now, something like this, unless it's powerful, there's not much room for it in today's age of tech, but in 2008 where laptops were still not massively Eco friendly and were still bulky, and netbooks which weren't powerful yet they were still bulky enough to be a small laptop, there was room for this, and there still is for those that rely on Linux and cant afford
