Just because an older kid told you to do it, doesn't mean you should do it. Your parents should've taught you right and wrong and not to steal. Kids like him should know this stuff, a stranger telling you to do things you should run and call for an adult and scream loud as you can. Back in my day, we were taught not to talk to strangers, we yell 'STRANGER DANGER!' loud as anyone can hear us, adults will come running.

I don’t think people understand how underdeveloped an 8 year old mind is. I was barely even alive when I was 8. I didn’t have much thoughts. Just emotions and impulsivity. My worldview was pretty simple. I started gaining true moral awareness a little while later but I still didn’t fully understand the consequences of my actions until early to mid teens. This is a baby. A little boy. Cops will cause him lasting trauma. The negative emotions will as well.

He wasn’t charged….as far as handcuffs and being put in a police car….let’s hope that was “traumatic” enough that he never listens to stupid ideas of older kids again. He could have killed himself, or someone else, he needs to be made to realize that…..and if that is traumatic…..well, life is hard.

When I was about 14 my older brother took me to court and told me to tell the judge that it was me who did the crime! I looked like a younger version of my brother and he said because I was to young they would just let me go! 😲. It worked but now 40 years later when I remind him about it he says it never happened! 🤬😡. 2 lessons learned: 1 Don't do someone else's time! 2 Don't do the crime if you can't do the time!

Thankfully no one got hurt by this kid’s DUMB (and his buddy’s) actions. Nevertheless, and while making no excuses for him, he is still an EIGHT YEARD OLD KID, and having arrested the situation, the ADULT cop should have seen how terrified he was and calmed him down (starting with answering his terrified questions - as I suspect most cops would for rich/suburban kids). I realize sometimes kids should be “scared straight” but still it would be reasonable to expect an ADULT in a position of public authority to at the very least have enough EMPATHY to consider and treat any little kid substantively as he would his (even if he believes his own kid would never act likewise). Under most circumstances, the first personal encounter of an 8-year-old with cops should ideally be a TEACHABLE encounter, not a hostile one.
@Beorno

why do cops ignore people, just talk to him, he’s a child, it doesn’t excuse what he did but ignoring him is so childish and cops do it wayy too much, your job is to serve and lack major communication skills.

To be fair we don’t know what the older kid did or said, and if the older kid knew he would take the blame otherwise he might have threatened physical harm or death on the little kid if he didn’t do it. Not saying the kid is totally off the hook, kids can always get adults for help, but we don’t know the whole story
