After dreaming of the perfect places for my herbs, I finally have a permanent place for them. Today I dig them out of the buckets they've been living in all this time and pant them in our new raised beds.

***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out new videos every week! We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

My favorite herb is Silver Lemon Thyme! Look for it! A very lemony, floral scent and taste. I use it on a lot of things, but especially on eggs and in marinara sauce. I had one survive the winter in a pot, but usually buy it as an annual every year. I’ve grown marshmallow from seeds from Baker Creek for three years, but only from seeds three years ago. Reseeds itself and I’ve had marshmallow even grow in my wood mulch on top of landscaping fabric!

I so enjoy watching how well God has blessed your greenhouse and garden. God did not bless me with a green thumb but I still love plants. Medicinal plants that I like to use are turmeric, ginger, elderberry, rose hips, hibiscus, lemon balm and chamomile ( I have all of these dried in my pantry). During the cold and flu season I make an elderberry syrup that has elderberries (of course), hibiscus, rose hips, ginger and raw honey.

God bless you Kevin and Sarah, and so happy for your dream herb garden. Also, some herbs to consider growing, are Pau d'arco which are good for a wide range of conditions, including pain, arthritis, inflammation of the prostate gland, fever, dysentery, boils, ulcers, free radicals and most important (various cancers, it's a potent cancer killer.) Tea tree leaves which are good for preventing tooth decay or cavities. 😃👍

I know what it feels like to wait for a long time for your dreams to come to fruition. I’m very happy for you! Grow what you love and use. Space is too precious to grow things you don’t love using. For me, lemon balm - I drink it almost daily, but it too can spread. Personally, I can’t have too much and when mine spreads too far I just dig some up and give it to friends.

Have you ever grown Lemon Verbena. It smells fantastic just like sherbet lemons. I use it to make tea. Also it's great if you cover the bottom of a sponge tin with the leaves, place a plain sponge mix on top & bake. The sponge is infused and the leaves easily peel off before eating. I also make a lemon syrup to drizzle over the top. Lemon Balm is used in the same way, but the Verbena is so much better. I over winter mine in a greenhouse as in in the UK 🇬🇧 & it is semi tender here.

I think there is something special about planting herbs. It feels different than planting ,let's say a tomato plant. I plant tomatoes lots of them, but planting herbs, just feels different. I think it's because our bodies know how beneficial they are. And also just our medicinal plants that are growing naturally around us that we have ignored or called weeds for so long. We need to go back and learn the old ways of using herbal medicine. You look so happy.

Years ago when my grandson was about 4 or 5, I made pasta tossed with olive oil and parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme from my garden. I told him it was from a song and sang it for him. He insisted I just made that up. When his dad came to pick him up, I said we made pasta and told him the ingredients and he immediately started singing, "Are you going, to Scarborough Fair?..." My grandson was stunned that his dad knew about that thing that the 5-year-old had never heard of. Now he occasionally asks if I can make Scarborough Fair Pasta when he visits and it's fun to see his high-school friends seeking out Simon and Garfunkle to hear that song and make their own dishes.

I'm so happy for you! 😀 I've planted a long row of chives. In my part of Sweden chives are among the first plant in the garden that I can get a harvest from and harvest I do. I cut them up an put them in the freezer. And I use them instead of onions in fried rice, omelettes, soups... It's kind of a 'plant once and harvest many years' kind of plant. And that's perfect for me. 😊

@@LivingTraditionsHomestead I wanted to share some observations and suggestions on your medicinal herb gardens. I also have mine in raised metal modular beds (mine are Birdies beds) Firstly, I noticed that the chives you planted are fully mature, with blossoms atop. My recommendation would be to trim them down to about an inch from the ground. This will help the plants recover from transplant shock. If you don't trim them, the roots will struggle to support all the top growth and seed development. It's always best to fully trim perennial herbs before transplanting . Secondly, I urge you to remove the yarrow and catnip (catmint) from your beds immediately. Yarrow is known for its prolific spreading through underground runners and self-seeding. I made the mistake of planting a small area of yarrow - a 3 inch square, in my bed and within a couple of seasons, it had taken over the ENTIRE bed and started spreading to other areas of my yard. Even with constant vigilance to contain it, you cant prevent it from taking over. The same is true with the catnip you planted in the last bed. The correct name is catMINT and as a true mint, it spreads prolifically. I removed all my catmint over a decade ago and I continue to find patches throughout my property to this day. As a true mint, it spreads aggressively. Lastly, you mentioned planting holy basil, also known as Tulsi. It's important to note that there are four different varieties of Tulsi, each with its own unique medicinal properties. It would be helpful if you could specify which variant you planted, whether it's: Tulsi - Vana Tulsi - Rama Tulsi - Temperate, or ; Tulsi - Krishna? All 4 cultivars get quite large. You may find that the quickly overtake the space. I hope these suggestions are helpful to you in maintaining your medicinal herb gardens. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions. I love planting herbs, I have them interspersed among my flowers and borders, and places in my yard where it's difficult to get other things to grow. I don't actually use all the herbs I plant but the pollinators love them. The beds in front of my house I planted herbs in there's a lot of Lavender, Thyme and Lemmon Balm. I love to sit their and watch the bees have fun. Although I really have to keep after the lemmon balm or it will overrun the bed. And it smells so nice. It's nice your herb garden dream came true. You need to put dill in next year for making dill pickles. I prefer the fern leaf dills as you get far more variety of use. Love to dice fronds small, thinly slice cukes, and greek yogurt. Mix, add some salt, and eat as a snack, salad, whatever. Add more veggies if you wish. Mycfamily used sour cream with this instead of yogurt. I do not need the fat or calories of sc, so tried it with yogurt. My dogs love it too!

My family moved to Missouri in April, the previous owners of the home we purchased select cut the timber and left us with a big mess, so we have a lot of "weeds" I had no idea how many of them have medicinal properties, it has peaked my interest and I have started studying, foraging, and preserving our weeds. We are working on putting together our garden area and for the first time I will have an herb garden as well. I love the raised beds you are using. Honestly You and Kevin are so creative. I’m so excited for your herb garden! Herbs have been a part of my focus this year but my ideas have far outreaches my time and abilities this year. I’m being patient though and trusting the process. I look forward to seeing your herb garden grow. Thanks for sharing the garden with us! PS my husband keeps asking if the cow had her baby 😊

Besides all the herbs you mentioned, I am growing chamomile, bee balm, hyssop, cumin, curry, lemon balm, and fennel. I am still developing my herb garden. I love your beds. Can't wait to see them all filled out. A cousin to Marshmallow are Hollyhocks. They give you some wonderful colored blossoms.

I can't use sage myself - it makes me sneeze - but we do grow it for my husband. Whenever he has a sore throat he steeps a few dried leaves in boiling water until it cools, removes the leaves and gargles with it. It usually just takes one day and he feels better. I don't know why it works but it does.

Milk thistle and dandelion root, try also growing mushrooms all types. Look up the antibacterial properties. All mushrooms are beneficial but some are stronger. St John's wort is another one. Milk thistle and dandelion root helps with keeping the liver happy, and you can do a tea like a gentle coffee

I grow my mint in clay sewer pipes, in a vertical orientation. Dig a hole the depth of the pipe length, "plant" the pipe, add soil, some mint stalks, and cover to top. My pipe generally pops up above garden level. Keep it watered and it will grow beautifully. Every 2 or 3 years, I dig it up, prune and replant. PS Hi from New Zealand :-)

I would love to see something on how you make your teas with herbs. And other ways you use / prepare your herbs in the kitchen and for health. I just LOVE your videos and always look forward to them. You have taught me a lot and I started a mini raised garden (in troughs) because of your videos. I am enjoying them.

Lemon Balm makes a wonderful summer tea and is calming mixed with Chamomile. Roman Chamomile has a lovely daisy flower. Both take space but so nice to have.

It is so funny to me what grows. I’m so jealous of your chives and anise hyssop. I have tried for 4 years and can’t grow it, but my marshmallow is huge and grows great with no help from me. Your garden looks so great.
