Pure alfalfa pellets are a good source of nitrogen also. Scratch a few into the soil surface.

Love the shirt! I’ve found sometimes it takes awhile for the nutrients to be released. I alway give them some fish fertilizer to help out at first

Even though you have good drainage… watering every other day will leach the nutrients out of the soil. Raised beds have a learning curve for sure; I am doing raised beds inside the greenhouse for the first time this year. Plants were taking way too long to take off. So I have started fertilizing once a week with Jacks 20-20-20. Everything is now lush and green and doing much better. I am curious about one thing; why are your new white beds so far apart? (It appears to be 5 or 6 feet between them.)

I’m a master gardener in NC and SC both. Both instructors said not to plant in pure compost as you have. You really need soil mixed in. The soil test will tell you a lot.

Sprinkle your plants with a blend of pure nitrogen, pure potash and sulfer, Do noget too close to the base of your plants to avoid burning them.. I had the same problem with my raised beds plants just didn't look very good. I have been doing this my whole life, and a lot our soil is lacking potash, and nitrogen. You blended your raised beds with the same thing I used and I had the same problems. I fed the beds with a generous blend of potash and nitrogen, things are looking great now. Jessie from Arkansas

We half and core our garden tomatoes, then give each half a good squeeze into a colander, saving the juice. Though we lose some of the sugar and flavor from not cooking down the processed tomatoes with the juice, it saves hours of time in the process. At the finish of the jarring of our sauce, or salsa, we cook and add salt to the juice and can it to add to soups.

I’ll be curious about the soil test but it looks a lot like the problem Jess at Roots & Refuge. She bought local organic compost and turned out there was GRAZON (from Round Up) in it. Yours is not as evenly mixed in. OR if the organic matter is not thoroughly decomposed, it will leach the nitrogen out of the soil.

You guys are such experts, you will figure it out; sorry you are having problems!! I agree that the soil probably needs enrichment, you just never know how good ¨compost¨ really is if it´s not your own. Hope everything continues to go well with Kevinś dad´s recovery. Love you guys! Need greener plants? Probably need more nitrogen, more iron, better chelation of iron and/or right pH like you suppose. Chlorophyll requires magnesium to form, so you might possibly need more available but that is less of a likely risk factor.

Even though the soil in the raised beds is compost that process can deplete the mix of nitrogen. Depending on the base components the micro nutrients can vary greatly even in the same bed, if the compost was not mixed often enough the mix can have great variation. Soil test should show what is lacking. Some complete fertilizer while waiting on test results will not hurt.

Aphids indicate that you have too much nitrogen in the plants, possibly from the compost.
@schex9

Overwatering is not a drainage problem; it means that the water is washing away the meager nutrients in compost. You need Microlife 6-2-4 or 8-4-6 immediately to grow strong plants. Then some organic option to give the plants nitrogen once the plants have fruit the size of a dime. I use calcium nitrate bc i don't think that fertilizer needs to be 'organic'.

The NPK of compost is something like 0.5-0.8-0.7. Not enough, and compost is a component of good soil; compost is NOT a growing medium.

The problem I have seen with a lot of compost we buy it seems to low on nitrogen to the point it even affects green beans. I plant in ground but I try to boost the nitrogen on my onions after planting so they will bush out, I feed them every couple feeds with fish emulsion I have been better good this year than I have in the past and they are fuller.

Highly recommend using a dose of alaska fish and bone meal fertilizers. Your big plants, summer squash, pole beans, are all heavy nitrogen feeding plants. I have grown all 3 of these exact varieties in western Washington and they need a lot of nitrogen. The same with the cukes. Remember that plants need phosphorous in order to form blooms.

I followed the same steps y'all have taken over the last six months with a few exceptions. I have 8 Vegega beds and they're only 11" tall. I got OMRI compost from two hours away. I put my starts in and they too were pale and underwhelming. I finally amended the soil and things are looking up. However, I have had an insane amount of rain this year and it did cause my tomato leafs to curl. (curly top maybe) Every time I think they're about to recover, we get another two inches in one pour. My blooms get knocked off before making fruit. :(. My okra did take off as soon as the heat increased as well.

Could it be the compost? Maybe there are some "hot" spots that are hurting the roots? Use the bright yellow party cups covered with Vasilinn and hang them around the plants. It works. I realized back on Monday that I'm ahead of my normal planting time. I'm almost done planting and I'm in northern MI!! Very happy. Thanks for sharing. God bless and protect. Praying for your dad for a full and fast recovery.

From the close up of the dill I noticed your soil looks like its got a lot of woody bits in it. If compost isn't fully broken down it will tie up nitrogen, robbing the plants of it, and honestly, that looks like the issue you are having. Not a ph issue. I would just spot fertilize and over time the compost will finish breaking down and you won't have any more issues.
