A group of 80 charities, including The National Trust and the RSPCA have released a report claiming the countryside is racist.

In the 1960's my family (white and English) moved to a small rural Essex village. After 4 years we were still regarded as new comers. Many immigrants are looking for jobs and not many of them want to be farm workers! Rural communities tend to be insular not racist.

I sometimes type random words into Google followed by "is racist", and more often than not something comes up saying that that thing is racist! Roads, trees, steam engines, driverless cars, dogs (yes, really!), cats, the seaside, cheese, furniture, tennis, pubs, plasters, gardening (apparently the word, "gardening", is loaded with "cultural baggage", according to the Guardian!), geography, maths (I'm not even joking!!!!!); apparently the difference between yams and sweet potatoes is structurally racist; bird names, ships, and traffic lights. I came to this country 16 years ago ( I am white) and I have been living in the countryside since. Yes, I do not see many people of colour where I live but I understood that many emigrants tend to go to live in cities as there are more work opportunities there, not because people are racist in the countryside. The countryside is for everyone - thats the point - a place you can truly be alone, the trees, moors, streams and rocks don't care who you are. I'm kind of a minority (gay) and you have to realise smaller communities are different - and they are all different from each other, most people don't care who you are! you'll always find elements of insular/xenophobia here and there, but in general smaller more rural communities are actually much more friendly than the city. I don't blame any perceived hostility or not finding services that meet my needs on 'homophobia' - it's not a healthy way to think.

If you are of a minority, you cannot help but be affected in some way by that situation. The question that never gets addressed is what can the majority do to make those who experience this in a negative way, feel less negative about their minority status in a multi cultural environment. If we take the UK as an example. This is a northern European country where the idigenous population are of pale skin. In order to ensure people of a minority group, (skin colour or otherwise), are not disadvantaged or discriminated against, the majority have introduced anti discrimination laws, created entities like the Race Relations Board, the Equal Opportunities Commision and the growing prevalence of diversity quota's, what more needs to be done? It is one thing to express a grievance driven by peronal feelings, but another to make constructive suggestions about how this might be further addressed.

Country folk take great pride in looking after the place they live. You rarely get littering, antisocial behaviour, violent crime, etc. Anyone who shares these values are welcome. I see massive cultural differences, where I could see how someone could easily feel unwelcome if they show no regard for the country way of life. Where I lived in rural mid Wales for 20 years, it was quite common to see unattended farm produce stalls, or newspaper stands, with an honesty box where you left your money and took your goods. I don't see that kind of thing in West Bromwich where I currently live... I wonder why? If being honest, polite and courteous is considered racist, then guilty as charged!

I remember going into a rural Post Office in N. Wales probably twenty plus years ago and as soon as I walked in and said hello those in the shop began talking Welsh, if that was designed to make me feel unwelcome then they succeeded. But I am a white British male, I cannot call that behaviour out as racist, if I was of colour I could call that behaviour out as racist but that does not make it racist just because I am of colour and I wold have been wrong to do so. Those locals in that Post Office made me feel unwlecome as an English person and it was deliberate, they were not racist but they were bigoted and rude, but not racist. I come from a rural area myself, many has been the time when a local pub has gone quiet because a stranger has entered, white strangers, again if they were of colour that might be called out as racist behaviour by those locals, but it would not be racist. It can be bigoted and it can be rude and it can be ignorant to the point of being wary or having a fear of strangers, that does not make it racist. I am not saying that racist do not exist in the rural areas, of course they do, they exist everywhere but these reports are extremely divisive and unfair. It seems to me that we now have an era where white people can be subjected to rude and bigoted behaviour but if a person of colour is subjected to that same behaviour then it is racist, it simply does not work like that. And no matter who writes these reports you cannot go around brandishing whole communities as being racist particularly where no evidence is being presented to show it, as here. These reports are based on perceptions, at best or going along with a narrative to prove their diversity at worst and both are very dangerous.
