It makes sense when you say, 'He is a likes sports (exercising) person.' In essence, 'He is a likes sports (kind of) person.' The 'kind of' is a substitute for the possessive 的. There are 'like sports' people and there are 'don't like sports' (不喜欢运动) people. We can even think about it as 'he is a person who belongs to (possessive) the group of people who like sports/exercising. It is a rearrangement for an English-speaking person to understand this, but, when you realize how much native Chinese speakers use the character 的, then you get the idea of possession. It is important to accept and learn how Chinese think when using this character.
@duozuo
@duozuo Ай бұрын
I think it's way easier than that, there's no need to overthink it. 😄 Take *A* = a noun, and *B* = a qualifying word of sentence (acting like an adjective). I'm a native Spanish speaker, and whenever we have a structure using the conjunction que, like *A* que *B* (el niño que llora, the child who cries), transforming it into *B* 的 *A* is relatively straightforward (哭着的孩子). Que in Spanish is used as frequently as 的. It's a bit more confusing in English, since omitting that kind of connectors is preferred, but whenever you have a structure like *A* who/that *B* it similarly becomes *B* 的 *A* (obviously, *B* should respect the correct Chinese structure). Example: someone nobody likes = 没有人喜欢的某人, you just need to think there's an omitted *who* in the English sentence. It's also easier to see if you understand grammatical cases, you'll realise in this situation 的 represents the genitive case. The genitive is frequently (and incorrectly) described in English as the possessive case, but it's much more than that in other languages. It's unnecessary learning these grammar concepts just for the sake of speaking Chinese, but it could be worth taking a quick look at them.

他是一个喜欢运动的人。 When a modifier ending with 的 contains a verb (such as 喜欢), this can be very challenging for English-speakers, because the word order is very different. That is why this video is so important. In such cases, one trick I like to use is to translate 的 as a 'relative pronoun' (such as "who", "that", "which", etc.) and then turn the phrase around to get: a person (人) who (的) likes to exercise (喜欢运动)

Nice one, 非常感谢老师! I always found the use of sentences with 的 relatively straightforward, while I'm struggling a bit more with 把. I'm a native Spanish speaker and we use similar structures (que is equivalent to 的, you only need to invert the order of the sides), but speaking Spanish with our equivalent to 把 is generally used by those less educated 😅. Example: Yo la cosa que bebí no la pagué = 我把喝了的东西没支付。 But you sound much more educated when you put the subject at the beginning = [Yo] no pagué la cosa que bebí = 我没支付我喝了的东西, while in Chinese it probably makes less sense.

Just picking up on an error: predicate = subject + verb. So you should either have a predicate for the smallest full sentence (eg I am), or predicate + object, which is how the majority of sentences are structured. You can split the predicate into subject and verb to show SVO.

Everything is hard at first, but it won't get any easier if you don't start! I started learning Mandarin a little over a year and a half ago. I had no intention of learning Chinese, I just saw a video of Chinese music and out of curiosity clicked it to see what it sounded like. I loved the music but couldn't even make out one word and wasn't even sure what language it was. Eventually I started seeing videos about sentences and grammar and learned this was Mandarin. I learned words, then tones, sentence structure and grammar and now I can make simple sentences and simple conversation. Listen to Chinese music in Mandarin, children's stories and songs, and intermediate podcasts. Listening everyday will help and practice saying phrases and sentences out loud, I learned phrases and sentences as a whole and said them out loud whenever I had a chance. Taking formal classes and lessons is important and will really help you advance. I speak 3 languages already so learning Mandarin is fun as I notice common features between the languages I know and Mandarin. Take thirty minutes to an hour and a half a day and soon you will be speaking Mandarin! You can do it! Why not start right now? Jia you!!!

I think you have clinched this very important difference between English and Chinese. Because Chinese doesn't use relative pronouns, you could just start a new sentence with its own subject. For example: "I met a person who can speak Japanese" 我认识了一个会说日语的人。 But you could equally say: 我认识了一个人。那个人会说日语的人。
