It's also important to note that the energy that's "lost" due to inefficiency is still definitely there, but gets converted into waste heat, facilitating the need for a fan in your psu.

The eXtreme Power Supply Calculator is a great resource for figuring out what PSU you should get for your system. They have the power requirement information for almost all hardware on the consumer market and the results are generally pretty close to real world measurements. The recommended size accounts for the maximum regular power consumption of the components selected plus a small margin for capacitor aging for a couple of years.

Not only was this an excellent explanation of the 80+ ratings, I also didn't know about the "idle under 20%" thing. Many build your own PC sites list wattage that your PC will pull, but i'm assuming those are probably at max power draw. Excellent little tid bit to throw in there!
@jasboehlke

Fantastic review. I use this as a link, oftern, when I present 80 PLUS(R). Note, 80 PLUS does capture efficiency at 10% load so that the consumer can be aware of efficiency below criteria and for Titanium 10% is a required data point. Well done and carry on with awesome reviews! Jason Boehlke Program Manager - 80 PLUS.

Hey guys correct me if i am wrong.. But Wattage of power supply (like 1200 watts psu etc) denotes the MAXIMUM watts it can supply right?! Not like it draws 1200 watts all the time right?? So basically a 1200 watt psu can supply as much wattage as much as the system needs between 0-1200 right?!

If a Power Supply is 600 W, then it can supply UP TO 600W. If your PC at idle takes 150W, then despite having a 600W PSU it'll drain only 150 Watts from the wall
@NerosCreations
@NerosCreations 8 жыл бұрын
+Damian Skrok Kinda, but if your PC takes 200W of power, and your power supply is 80+ efficient, your PSU will draw 200W + 20% due to it's efficiency. PSUs are rated at their maximum DC output, not AC input

Well, the drive cache on a SSD or HDD is pretty much like RAM, it's used temporarily to transfer the data (the CPU sends chunks of data to the cache so it don't have to wait for the drive to process every single bytes, as the CPU is much faster) and it is usually in quite small capacity (usually 32MB or 64MB). SSD caching and Hybrid drives are basically copying the most used data form the HDD to the SSD so it can deliver this data faster using the SSD instead of the slow HDD, when available.

What do you need to know about those cables/ Molexx is specifically most commonly used for powering case fans( in older days of 2005,2004 and earlier...they powered older hard drives like ide ata133 & ata100 hard drives & older cd rom, cd burner, dvd rom optical 5.25 inch drives. Those were replaced by Serial ata ( or sata) drives and sata cables which are MUCH smaller and much more efficient. 6pin provides 50watts wile 8 pin provides 75 watts, Pci Express x16 provides 75 watts in addition.

The Seagate Momentus XT is pretty much a SSD caching drive: It's a standard HDD with a small SSD used for caching the most used files. This type of hybrid drive is very useful for laptops as there's often only room for a single 2.5" drive, so it gives a balance between a fast SSD with limited capacity and slow HDD with large capacity. I was wondering if SSD caching has better performances than Hybrid HDDs - would be interesting to get some benchmarks.

How big a psu do you need video please? Like can you tell us how much a traditional hdd uses and how much lean way we should leave for overclocking. Also, the amount of power fans use. My friends ask me so often how many watt psu they need and I normally stick to the rule for 1155: 1 GPU 600w, two GPU 800w and then for 2011 single GPU 750w, two GPU 1000w. Would be amazingly helpful to lots of people I think! PLEASE DO IT! :D

I can't see why others think the way they do, so I cannot really see this as complicated. About the only thing I can see that is at all 'different' is there are two types of percentages talked about one being efficiency and one being percentage of full power. What is possibly 'confusing' is the two are not differentiated so there is talk of 89% at 80% (89% efficient at delivery of 80% of full power).

One nice thing you forgot to mention is some of the nice higher wattage power suppliers will turn their fan completely off if you stay below 20-30 percent draw. I got tired of hearing my old power supply wrap up it's fan while I was trying to watch movies so I went out and bought a 1000 watt PSU and I love it. Completely silent and I don't give really give a dookie about efficiency since I don't leave my computer on all day and night.

I hope @Techquickie would confirm if I understood that correctly. Because in that case that would explain a lot to me and help a lot in choosing power supplies. Would save me a lot of money too. If the efficiency CAN go down when the power of your psu doesn't match the draw of the system, then having an overpowered psu for a system, would cost you more money in electricity bills than just getting the right one.

with a "kill a watt" device which they are often priced between 15 to 20 ish bucks on newegg...ncixx, amazon, and microcenter. Just make SURE to plug IT straight into the wall outlet and then your computer's psu power cord into the kill a watt..otherwise You risk getting an inaccurate reading. I would not recommend leaving it like this forever..if a storm hits your area ( like i just learned the hard way) it could fry your motherboard and brick it. cheers

+T Soft Efficiency goes by percentage. The max theoretical efficiency is just shy of 100%. You can't pull 50 watts from the wall and get 500 watts magically. And when a conversion is done, some power is lost as heat. Anyway, power supplies work by taking x amount of watts, cutting the voltage and sending it to the different components of your computer through multiple rails. The PSU will take x amount of watts multiplied by the efficiency level of the power supply at the current percentage of its maximum continuous output wattage.

@Faris Ahmed alot. GPU and PSU are completely different. Google 780ti vs 980ti. There are some great websites that compare cards.

I am thinking of upgrading my computer and the specs are: EVGA GTX 760 SC Intel core i5-4690k 3.5GHz MSI Z97 Gaming 5 Motherboard And a Acer GN246HL Black 24. Can all of this be ran with a CORSAIR HX series HX650 650W 80 PLUS GOLD?

let me get this straight. say a power supply has 500 watts and exactly 80% under full load. when under full load, does this mean the power supply produces 500 watts (100%) to the pc, and 100 watts (20%) into heat and other types of energy. or does it mean that, under full load, 400 watts (80%) are delivered to the pc, and 100 watts (20%) are delivered into heat and other energy types?
