I think that might be Marj Dusay in the Datsun ad. I know her from soap operas, but she was also Blair's mom on The Facts of Life. So yeah, a rich, snobby mom like Lucille.

@simplyvk The national ban on cigarette advertising was passed in 1970 via the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act. Tobacco manufacturers like Backwoods Smokes got around this by selling cigarillos instead, which were not covered under this act.

There's one of those weird soft toilet seats in my house. I always wondered where it came from. Now I know. True Value, 1982. Thanks!

@Fairia The name was a combination of the names of the guys who founded it.

@rockergirl83 These aren't cigarettes...they're mini cigars. The product was essentially designed to skirt the TV advertising ban on cigarettes. After 1970, ads for cigarettes weren't allowed on television. You could still advertise other tobacco products before 1986 though.

You made my day with the Sambos commercial! I remember having a discussing with someone during my high school days whether or not these still existed. Also, that is soap actress Sydney Penny in the "Grizzly Adams" promo.

This could also be considered the "sportscasters announcing for commercials" block (at least with the True Value ad featuring Pat Summerall's voice-over and TWA with Don Criqui).

@agltbialik This movie is actually just plain "Vice Squad". "Hollywood Vice Squad" was released in '86. I posted a spot for it in Vol. 120. I'm sure they're VERY different movies LOL

I've been looking for the "New Backwoods Smokes" advert for quite a while. It appeared at a time when it seemed there were no cigarette adverts on TV. It quickly disappeared. Thanks again. Enjoyed seeing those other adverts as well, most of which I can't remember very well .. !

Ok, before I even started watching, I laughed at your first description - (This is what happens when you employ a crazy old hobo to look after a beer factory) Perfectly described. I see this Vice Squad is a bit more serious than it is funny (from Vol 120) I'm sure the American Motors ad was a Sedelmaier creation. His style is evident throughout the whole thing. Thanks for the first Datsun ad, I wanted to see a full length one from this year, I saw another one somewhere else that was cut off.

1:00--Those soft toilet seats were a fad at that time. We had one similar to this. 3:03--Interesting how they were able to get around the cigarette advertising ban by making "cigarillos", or mini cigars. 3:33--I loved Sambo's when I was a kid! Don't recall having breakfast there, though. Kind of a pity that the controversy over their name led to their downfall. 4:04--"Datsun--Product of Nissan." I think this was shortly before they officially rebranded. 6:33--I remember a lot of beer commercials from this period (despite being a decade too young to legally drink the stuff in 1982), but surprisingly I don't seem to recall this one, given its catchy jingle and Irish theme. 7:03--We had Marc's Big Boy in my area back then, but like Sambo's, they are sadly a thing of the past (at least around here).
