As I mentioned a few volumes ago, Christmas Eve 1987 was when I was dreaming of getting a NES. One year later, Christmas Eve 1988, that Nintendo love was just as strong. That was the year that two of the biggest NES games of all time, Super Mario Bros. 2 and Zelda II: the Adventure of Link were to be released. However, due to a supposed chip shortage, not many copies were able to be released that holiday season, making both games incredibly sought after. I was lucky enough to get both Christmas of that year, along with Bubble Bobble and a Nintendo shirt that I proudly wore when I went back to school after New Years that year, and was a big hit with my fellow Nintendo-obsessed friends.

My grandmother probably would have loved to see this Disney special. Her favorite Disney animated movie is "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves." I have a promo for it myself, from 1987.

You will never be able to convince me that the ad executive in charge of the Campbell's Soup account didn't continuously forget his deadlines and would end up making up his slogans on the fly. "Stephens, what have you got for the new Campbell's campaign?" "Uhhh...well...'Soup is...good food?'" "Brilliant! They'll love it!" Several years later "OK, Stephens what have you got for Campbell's new ad line?" "Uh...um...hmmm...mmm 'Good'" "'Mmmm Mmmm Good?' Stephens you're on fire!"

The dwarf costumes in this special are the same ones they use at Disneyland today. They're really not that weird or creepy compared to what came before them: i.imgur.com/f8XpPLP.jpg i.imgur.com/gqAKb32.jpg

@Hope Grimsley A great deal of the costumes used in Disneyland before 1970 were absolutely terrifying and have a creepy bootleg carnival quality to them. aminoapps.com/c/disney/page/blog/vintage-scary-disneyland/V0KR_ZK1T7uPmep5kkNw4WaDno5EeNLxRx2 I actually really like these Dwarf costumes from the 70s: instagram.com/p/B8kUkMxH8yk

@@80sCommercialVault thank you for sharing the article! There are some pretty scary ones featured there. I appreciate the Seven Dwarves palate cleanser too. Those are nice costumes; they don’t look too far off from modern day.

I almost forgot animated Ed Grimley was a thing on Saturday mornings once upon a time - in one episode they had a segment featuring Count Floyd of SCTV fame! Anything flew for Saturday morning cartoon ideas at one time!

Even outside of Defunctland, I can't escape him! Curse you EISNER!!!! On a nicer, non PTSD note: It's great looking at how TV was before my time, how it compared to TV earlier in my life, and I would say how it compares to now but I don't watch TV anymore but from mobile YT ads there's such a departure. Even 2010s ads (more notably from 2014 onward) feel so different from both the 2000s all the way back to the 80s. It almost feels like there's no through-line. The Internet age really did a number on commercials and I suspect it's due to things like overabundance of banner ads and so many being incredibly untrustworthy to interact with to the point where advertising agencies had to take a radical shift in ad production and design to reign in the market. But those are just my ramblings, and I still got 2/3rds left of video to watch!
