GK made a rare guitar combo in the early 90's (around the same time they offered the 100mpl preamp) called the backline 100 that I've seen a few times online and tried to buy it, but the seller was a good distance away and would not ship. If you can locate one I would dig a full rundown on your channel here.

I knew about the Lifeson connection… but I was unaware of the Maiden one. Now that I hear it, I’ll never be able to unhear it on those albums. Like Def Leppard and the Rockman-type devices all over Hysteria. It’s always funny looking back at how many of us guitar wannabes in those days looked down on these solid state offerings, blissfully unaware that all our heroes were making the music we listened to obsessively on them.

Leon, always enjoy your content but wanted to clarify that Alex Lifeson was still primarily using his Marshall combos on Power Windows and started using the GK pretty exclusively on Hold Your Fire the following year and also 1989’s Presto. Maiden indeed used the GK for both Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son. IMO, the lead sound is quite good on the 250 but I think it’s Achilles’ Heel is the rhythm sound achieved on the Rush and Maiden efforts. I think for almost anyone who compared the guitar sound on 1983’s Piece of Mind to Somewhere In Time, they’d probably say it’s tasty, juicy beef vs way too lean beef that needs some flavoring. Each to their own I guess but as always really enjoyed the video. Thanks!

Brialliant review. I owned the 250ML back in the late 80s. It was so cool having all that power in a small form factor. I used to take it into the Guitar Center in Hollywood and test cabinets with it and man did that thing stop everyone from playing and listening when it was paried with a nice 4x12. I gigged with it for a few years and my only advice would be to make sure you tame that high end. It can crispy real fast and people will no enjoy the razor blade to the ear tones if you aer not mindful. LOVE the maiden like intro you came up with - its stuck in my head now. Damn I want that Hamer guitar of yours ;) Thanks again for bringing this out for a proper review. Many cheers!

I have the 250ML, and it REALLY shines when you hook it up through a 4x12. Sounds absolutely killer through my Marshall 1960BV - gain for days, and the EQ is so sensitive and wide that you can get pretty much anything you want...I know it's most associated with Rush and Maiden, but it really shined for that very hot-rodded 80s metal sound. Got some really good Nuno (Pornografitti) tones out of mine. No OD in front needed, as there's just tons of gain in these. Also have a MLS head and 2000 CPL preamp on the way, really stoked to check those out. EDIT: Also, these have the internal trim pots for gain under the hood. Mine was turned all the way down, and it took a couple of months before I discovered them

Very nice! I recently got one of these as well as I had one in the 80s and it was super nostalgic. One tip, there's a couple of trim pots inside if you pop the top off. They adjust the gain structure. Just make sure to mark where the original positions are if you go fiddling with them! I was having a hard time hearing the echo in the video. Just went and plugged mine in to compare. Yeah, the echo is a pretty strongly mixed medium sized, hard hall reverb effect. Maybe it didn't translate as well over youtube?

The 250s are some of the greatest amps ever made. I sincerely regret selling my 250ML ii. One thing more people need to know: Those push-button controls were not just ON or OFF. You could tweak them. In this video's example, for example, the Echo is pretty low key. Every one of those features had a little mini-pot inside, under the hood. Pop off the top lid, and the pots are right there. Play with them with a little mini screwdriver and see what you like. Cheers

ooh, nice to actually see one of these. you couldn't get these anywhere in the UK back in the day. they were like mythical beasts we only heard about in the guitar magazines. the chorus is pretty bad on these isn't it. some kind of haas delay going on that pushes everything to the right (unless yours is broken?). i don't think maiden used these for too long. probably very reliable on tour though and actually sounds pretty decent. thanks for digging up all these 80's and 90's bits of gear. it's great to be reacquainted with some of them and see others for the first time.

Great sounding piece of gear. Especially its bigger brother, the 2000CPL, is the perfect guitar preamp in my opinion. Not only does it have the chunky low-mid area with a huge bottom end, as well as the lovely chorus and compression, but it also has built-in echo and noise reduction, features that, in my opinion, every amp should have. I should also mention that this is all done with solid-state technology, and with such impressive result, that I wonder why we still bother with tube amps when I solid-state amp can sound this good and better than tube. To my ear, these G&K amps just sound really musical, probably due to the lovely evenness in the tone, which I attribute to compression. The other thing that's great about these amps, is that even with a lot of gain, they sound so controlled. For example, the intro to "The Prophecy" by Iron Maiden would have never sounded as musical and controlled with a tube amp, but the G&K totally delivers beautiful distorted and compressed tone without noise.

I have stereo fender princeton chorus that sounds almost identical to somewhere in time tone as well as Boston and Def Leppard tones. Those are some sweet amps getting hard to find🤘🎸

Been curious about these forever. Great video, as always! Anyone mention that Gilmour used one on Momentary Lapse?

I had the 250ml and loved it! Somehow I ended up with a Ross Distortion pedal in the loop and it sounded fat and amazing! Ended up selling it for the next hot amp, the MP1

Somewhere in time is my all time fav maiden album. Amazed it’s all because of this amp. There’s probably no way to get this amp. Anyway I can recreate the SIT tone with my AX8?

Basically it's a fixed distortion sound with an active 4 band EQ, so you could start with any dirty amp and sculpt it using a PEQ

I had both the ML and the RL years ago. Sold them. There's somethig in Maiden's mid tones that I was unable to find in these amps, whatever the guitar I'd use. I ended thinking they didn't really use them in studio, not for all their guitars at least.

That’s like a Time Machine into the 80s - wondering if my old Vox Venue solid state amp from similar era would get me in the ballpark with the a boss ce2w and re2 - at least worth the experiment ! Time to get it out of the garage !

I have a GK 112LC 100 watt combo guitar amp from that time period and there is not a single YT video on this amp. Bought it at Guitar Center for $99 USD in 2017 or so and is great amp that takes pedals well. Comes with an effects loop & headphone output. My late friend had one in the 80s, so I had to grab it at that price.

The thing that struck me the most was how good the overdrive/distortion sound was. For an 80's solid state is was really good. As for other older solid state stuff, how 'bout the Marshall 9004. Michael Nielsen did a vid on this about 3 years ago. Be nice to see/hear your perspective on it.

My late 80's rig had two 250 RL's in my rack driving stereo 4x12's and a 250 ML on a stand for my stage monitor.... kinda miss that rig sometimes.....

@@LeonTodd Wow just seeing this but thanks for the response, huge fan by the way, love your playing. I remember learning the lick on your rockman video a few years ago (mainly to impress girls) but it also spurred progress in my playing. Again huge fan, your playing really inspires me and you're one of my favorite yt guitarists.
