My dad was born in 1936... I was born in 1984... Something about that generation. My god, I don't think you could get a better group of guys as we're those born and living in the western United States around and before ww2 kicked off. My hats off to them. I strive to be half the men they are even on their worst days

You know, its kinda funny, I am born in 1998, my father 1964, my grandfather 1922 (past away now) me and my father say the exact same thing, you don't find a guy as genuine and tough as those pre ww2 fellows. They where made out of steel but had a soul soft as a poppy. I strive to be 1/2 the man of my father and a 1/4 of my grandfather...

Are we all going to pretend like we didn’t notice your dad had a baby at 48!? I guess in my family my great grandfather was born about 18 years before that time and fought in the war... my father born in ‘67 and I in ‘85 No joke though even my dad not to mention my great grandfather are/where tough. Great grandpa Merrill was still shoveling snow and being active right up until his dying days. I think that what I’ve learned is it’s important as a man to keep working, not sitting watching tv or whatnot...unless you need the rest if you want to live long and happily you’ve got to be imersed into a project for mental, physical, and spiritual strength

I love the fact that truly skilled craftsmen fill their shops with the things that work. Cy's got a hand cranked blower and a digital tempering oven. That pretty much covers both ends of the spectrum. Scott, I pray you do your best to keep Cy in good health so that his knowledge, ethos, and products can be passed down to as many as possible. Keep forging!

I've been welding for 5 years and got to the point to where my hands barely register heat before it blisters me. An 80 year old man who's been blacksmithing his whole life? I would believe it if you told me you could build a campfire in his palms. Regular heat wont touch this guy any more.

@@MagiRaz yup, welding, grinding and cutting makes your hands used to heat real fast. Took me less than a year to weld without gloves. Been out of welding for a living, only do it at home a couple times a month and i can't stand the heat anymore. I need gloves now.

@@MagiRaz We were inspired by this series of chats with Cy, to go visit him. He and his lovely wife welcomed us to their ranch home and we spent the day with them. He made two knives with my kids, teaching them as they went, ages 10 & 12. At a point when he took them to the grinders to start some shaping, he showed the kids how to be careful by grinding off some of his fingernail to show them what damage could be done. His emphasis was clear. Then the kids proceeded, bare handed and focused. One of the most memorable visits we've ever had. Then we commissioned Cy to make us an heirloom hunting knife to keep his legend strong and inspirations sharp.
