Every ear is a little bit different but in general I recommend not Q-tipping. For this scenario it would have been easily prevented with once monthly over the counter ear wax softening drops. Thanks for watching!

We need some wax in the ear canal to keep the skin healthy. It helps maintain a specific pH balance. It helps keeps microbes that live there in check. No wax could create an unhealthy environment. Too much wax can also create problems. ENT's are there to help when things get out of control.

The method is the use of a ear speculum while using a microscope, not an endoscope as you might see on other channels.

Ears are self-cleaning. Most people don't need their ears cleaned. But some people like this person have an excessive buildup of ear wax. In that case, they need to be cleaned. But everyone should have their ears checked periodically to see if they are having any issues. I see an ENT once a year to get my ears checked and cleaned. That's sufficient to keep the excessive buildup of ear wax in check. That's the schedule my ENT put me on after examining my ears and determining how big of a wax buildup problem I had.

Hi, I have two questions: How come you're not wearing gloves and do you get all of your patients' consent to post these videos? I only want to learn information, and I'm not saying this to be mean or snarky.

1. Gloves - as a practitioner and surgeon I prefer skin on skin contact for my examinations of the head and neck. I will glove up for exams requiring mucosal surface contact. A procedure such as ear cleaning bears no risk of contamination and I wash my hands thoroughly before ever patient encounter and my instruments are sterilized after every use. 2. Consent - Absolutely patients are consented prior to pushing the record button. Thanks for watching!

If Q-tipping causes problems then that is when I advise people to stop it. If it doesn't cause problems then there is no problems to manage. Every ear is a little bit different. Hope that helps.
