I have a 2000 3l s type. Never been garaged, so out in all weathers in the UK.Body and paintwork all original and sound. 124000 miles. For $800 the car is FABULOUS...it runs and has COLD AC, and "everything works"...and you got home with no issues. What more on God's green earth could you expect for $800 in an automobile??? We own one of these cars...a 2005 example that we bought 4 years ago with 25,000 miles...the lowest mileage example advertised in the US at the time. We paid $7900 and feel like we stole it...it is an amazingly good looking, good performing, and well-made vehicle. ANY modern car that is 20 years old is going to have some plastics issues. Even Bentleys have chrome plated plastic grilles. Ever try to open the dash glove box on a Cadillac XLR that cost $80,000 or more new? Odds are 9 in 10 it will crack off in your hand.

Mate, its a 20 year old car. Look at 20 year old fords, they are already scraped. If you look at BMW or Audis from this era all the buttons will be faded, headlinders sagged, buttons will not work, sagging leather from the steering wheel... for the price its a fair buy and even if the car would be more expensive if you compare it to same price BMW or Audi they will be always, always in much, much worse condition. this one with 3.0 V6 and auto is the deal one to buy. lot of character, comfy, good price and its a youngtimer already. I'm buying one to myself very soon. always wanted one, now they are cheap and soon petrol cars will be banned anyhow in EU so one of the last moments to enjoy some of the legends for a cheap price.

I have one of these cars. I have it over here in Russia and this is a terrible climate to keep a car in. The car that you have as an example there has been used extremely hard. There have been children and things sitting in the interior and things have been spilled on that leather. Even over here where we have wild fluctuations in temperature from -40 Celsius which is somewhere like-10 degrees Fahrenheit up to 80 degrees where the interior the car is warm from your heater my leather is in good shape. Also the plastic bits it seems like somebody's been playing around. My interior is still in reasonably decent shape as far as nothing's breaking like that. I do find that the interior of my Jaguar is a definite Cut Above modern cheap cars like Volkswagen Polo and Hyundai cars. The seats are still very comfortable even after all this time and it has a good amount of wood in it that is very beautiful. Is it a perfect car no but is it worth the money sure. One point I would make is try not to buy the six cylinder unless you're getting one of the modern xjs with a turbocharged six. The extra two cylinders in the 4.0 really make a difference in this car is one of the fastest things on the road believe it or not. It has to be something like a Bentley with two turbos or some other high-end vehicle to be able to beat me in a drag race. Most other cars are just left in the dust. Yeah okay it's Russia it's a little different than the United States :-)

I don't agree. The car cost a grand. It looks good outside and it is working fine. It has 22 years of wear on it and your crapping all over it because it needs some restoration and er you don't like the style. Most cars this age for $800 will hardly get you down the road. The book on the car is likely twice what you paid for it. I don't know what you expect for a grand. Check out auto trader and see if you can do better. Doubt it.

I had an ‘03 3.0v6 2nd generation with the 6 spd automatic transmission and i loved it so much even if the maintence costed me thousands of dollars. The electrical parts are not the most reliable part of the car but mechanicaly the car is rock solid. I have driven a 1st gen 4.0v8 and the differences are like sky and earth. Jaguar really took a big step with their revised versions. They modified the front suspension and the interior and put a 6 spd ZF transmission in it. Every car in the US is suffering from the peeling clear coat and from the sagging headliner because the sun is much stronger than in Europe. Would well worth to talk about US cars cause all of them are ugly and crappy. Hated to drive them when my beautiful and stylish Jaguar was in the service. Somehow i always had to deal with the strong cheap 87 gas smell what is constantly kept flow into the passenger cabine. Cadillac, Chevy you name it all of them have this problem and this is just one of the endless problems what they have.So your statement is completly baseless and ignorant. I really miss my Jag i have 3 great years with it. Will never forget the way it feels to drive and seeing the smiling and waving people everywhere i went with it.

I've owned two 2000 S-type 4.0s's. Both were fantastic AND reliable. t is obvious that this particular vehicle has been in a hot, humid environment, likely kept outside its whole life and is generally very unloved. To conclude that all Jaguar S-type must therefore be of the same quality is disingenuous. The only point I agree with is that the early, car shared a lot of ford parts. That's not a bad thing IMHO. It's like saying an Audi has lots of VW parts. Or an Infiniti has a lot of Nissan parts. Yep, ok. Oh and the beating heart of this car is all Jaguar - The AJ8 32 valve DOHC VVT V8 is one of the best V8's. You should have gone for a 2003 or newer S-type. It was heavily revised both indie and out and would have addressed every complaint you mentioned. Still, if you buy sight unseen and not really bothering to research what you're buying, you really only have yourself to blame.... Oh and yes, I am a Jaguar fanboy. Apart from the 2 s-types, I've also owned an '04 XJ8, a '96 XJ6, an '03 XK8, an '09 XFR and an '05 X-type. all were reliable, only needing regular maintenance items, None ever let me down and all were great to drive and lovely to look at. Hello! I am from Spain and I have the same car but here it is not very common, I would like to tell you some things that have me a little worried. The first is that when I start the car cold and put the D the car moves forward without emitting any kind of sound, but when you make the gear change you hear a small clone, could this be ABS? it only does it once when starting it cold without any type of vibration. The second is that when the car is parked at idle, sometimes I feel some small tremors, for example when I stop waiting at the traffic lights. I hope you can give me some information, thank you very much!

If you have a 3 liter the thing is simple. The air inlet is over half of the V. When they replace the sparkplugs some are too lazy and they only do the 3 that they can reach easily. This means you have 3 new spark plugs and 3 (very?) old ones. It can also lead to more problems if you never change them. If you have an automatic mind they need oil/filter change and flush at ~90.000 km. Regular (and not lazy, half done) service is the solution to trouble-free motoring.
