Over the weekend we visited Chillingham in northern Northumberland. The first part of our visit was to see the magnificent Wild Cattle of Chillingham.
This was a carefully guided tour of a Medieval hunting ground where we got to see the largest wild land-animals in Britain!
In Part.2 - We visit the Castle!

'Never touched by anyone.' Guess what, there is a legend these cattle are descended from fairy cro sith (cows) and that they will kill anyone who touches them. Interesting! Notice the guide with the cattle prod? Yikes! :O

I wonder if they have a problem with genetic diversity if there is only a herd of 100.

Cypher I asked about genetic diversity and morphology and it turns out that historic predation, the fact that males compete for mates (rather than being presented mates on a farm), and also careful management of the herd (diseased animals are culled before disease spreads for example) means that the herd maintains a certain genetic circulation and selection.

That opening 0:01 and closing 3:18 Baaa reminds me of something... kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYKyXpSFma9_n9k Nice video again, enjoying your editing in of music and syncing it with the scene and subject changes. Balance that with the educational stuff and I have little doubt this channel's popularity will skyrocket.

This video could have been a lot better with some narration. As someone with a Visual handicap, this video is very difficult to enjoy.

Wayne Scace That is a fair point. I typically produce videos with a voice over or ‘to camera’ segments but lately I’ve been experimenting with editing and music a little more. It’s an ongoing process and I’ll be certain to consider that in the future. Thanks for watching none-the-less!

Archaeology Soup Did your vid say that the beasts receive no veterinary care?
@Archaeos0up
@Archaeos0up 6 жыл бұрын
Wayne Scace Yes. It is part of the effort to keep them wild. Initially that may sound like an act of ‘depriving’ the creatures of medical care. However, these animals are not domesticated and they are subject to the same health variables, challenges and successes as other wild animals.

Archaeology Soup That wasn't a criticism. I was asking for clarification.

Wayne Scace Oh, indeed! I suggested that it might be surprising because many in our tour group were amazed and we were told that people often suggest that it’s cruel. I suspect this is because we rarely see wild cattle and so cattle evoke a strong need to look after them as domesticated creatures.
