Instead of Light as a Feather...drummer 2 seemed to be playing the "Heavy as an Anvil" version...good drummer but it was too heavy handed for my ears...could have used a little more finesse...

Bert was impressive indeed! Man that kid had that song nailed and I really liked the arrangement that he did. Keep more of these coming Nathan, there are some of us who really enjoy them. :-) Kanado Sato was most impressive as well. I love to see female drummers beasting on the kit. It is a joy to me. :-)

You are an EXCEPTIONALLY talented youtube creator. No one else that I’ve seen puts so much thought into the flow of the video, content, AND balances with genuine high level humor. You are wicked cool, dude - ‘nother level that others don’t understand and haven’t reached, in my opinion. You’re also humble which is endearing and keeps your viewers coming back again and again. If I don’t happen to care about a given topic, I’ll still watch for the entertainment value alone. Yep, you’re that good. Thanks so much for the videos!

I COMPLETELY agree with your winner. I had the biggest smile on my face listening to his version. Your version was dope as well. I love that you stripped it down. Not a fan of how the first 2 drummers went cymbal happy during that classic break, muddying the effect of it...but their samba parts were really good i thought

Thanks for posting this and for giving us a bird’s eye view of some absolutely perfect bass drum technique (Ms Kato) , however it wasn’t “heel up” as you said, it’s hell up and down alternating . Bert’s version was unbelievable as well but IMO nothing will ever beat Airto’s original version.. Just the sound of his ride ... I liked your take on it as well.

My soapbox is puny, but regardless of nuance and finesse and variation (nice catch with the "brazilian clavé" BTW, the bilingual version of Girl from Ipanema being a good case of point), the 1 - 2-a -ride pattern still seems alien to me in a Brazilian setting. Just like the hi-hat footings on... where they're played 99% of the time. That hasn't stopped me from playing with my left foot "as before", but IMHO the right hand is better off playing other patterns in the long run. BTW I heard a funny story about the origin of Airto's pattern, told by the man himself, but I'm not gonna get into that right now. In any case, top notch content again, as was to be expected!

Totally agree with your ratings this time, Nate. Bert killed it. I'll limit be significantly more terse with my constructive criticism this time. While it didn't feel as tight as the other performances (though stylistically, I do prefer yours to Sato's) it certainly wasn't bad, and you're definitely more in your element here than in past attempts. In terms of your choices, my main criticism is the overabundance of straight 8th notes on the left foot. It muddies the ride pattern, and I'm missing that interplay between the left foot and the snare that's such a huge part of the samba. You do the left foot justice earlier in the video when you're demonstrating the samba, however. In terms of execution, I still want to hear a larger range of dynamics, and I want to see (and also hear) less stiffness.

I wish people like this stop making music to be like a competition music never was meant to be a competition it's called arts and that's what makes it unique everybody speaks differently walks differently expresses themselves differently and that's what makes the world so unique and music's no different it's sad when certain people think that music has to be competition thing it's never been that. Funny thing is this is a song that you just don't hear in the radio or it's a popular thing so what's the big deal man.

I've seen Spain covered by 100's of drummers.....just my 2-cents, but most of the hits in the tutti section are staccato, yet so many drummers hit crash cymbals on them (and vice-versa on non-staccato hits)....drives me bananas sometimes...but whatever works i guess...

In total agreement. Bert Villegras played so tastful and yeah he did his homework. All of them, yourself included, can play rings around me on a tune like this but I have to say #2, Shaba Segun (who has monster chops) played the entire piece at one dynamic level, he's better than that. How would Don Brewer play "Spain" ?
