In this video I want to Myth Bust whether or not an 80cc engine will work with a forced ram intake setup (intake in front and exhaust in back). With the jug turned around, piston turned around, and the exhaust modified... We will see if we can get this motorized bike to motor! 😎👍

Thanks, I was wondering about this. Back in the day, British builders would do this with Triumph vertical twins, and it seemed to work fine. I'm not sure about the engineering details, but it seemed that the boost effect would be beneficial for increasing power. Twin Amals with velocity stacks and convex integral screens up front to keep things clean and flowing efficiently. In the early days of two stroke racing in Europe, the engines used superchargers in order to increase performance. I'm not sure if they used case induction or cylinder ports. Eventually the supercharger was banned, perhaps for safety reasons. A narrow power band may have made controlling the bike difficult. This kind of forced air induction might be a good alternative.

I did this once on a board track replica to make it look more like a vintage bike. I talked it over with Matt at Bicycle Motor Works and he advised a little porting on the transfer ports in the case and the cylinder to make a better flow and it ran lot smoother with more power after I did.

Thanks for being a part of this vid! I am planning on doing just that on the next video. This was just ”can it be done” look. I'll be opening the intake. Cleaning the ports, transfer ports, and jug. I'll bore the intake manifold and add an additional bottom gasket. I also need to work on the jetting a bit. Keep an eye out for the results! Thanks again.

Even tho the boost from having the intake facing into the wind isnt much i think it is much better than the wind passing by the intake mounted on the other side trying to suck out what in it like a chimney on a house. Every little bit counts.

Max speed 31mph, ive done 45mph on my stock ported 66cc gasbike. Must be the restricted transfer ports to the crankcase not aligning, port match everything and port it inside 1-2mm intake(don't go up) and exhaust (don't port down just sides/maybe just a little on the top)

I'm currently running a bbr 100cc engine...also with a reverse jug..placing the intake up front and the exhaust in the rear..only problem is, you have to run a bigger jet to allow more fuel to keep up with the extra air..

You could probably widen the transfer openings in the case with a carbide cutter and get that torque back.

thats far out , i was thinking about this and am now going to put two 100cc motors in a vee configuration so the carbs are in between the engines and build a jackshaft setup to connect them ..they should self time with clutch slippage ,,ill see if that works

Sweet! You essentially gave it ram air like an old Firebird! I might try this with my next build, which is probably going to be a stripped down nel lusso with mountain bike tires and different handlebars.

Just had to port the case on a LD80. There is plenty of meat there to match ports and have ample seal surface.

what if a guy were to just turn the whole motor 180 degrees and flip the coil magnet for the right timing? Any thoughts?

You would run into a lot of issues, in my opinion. You'd have chain clearance issues, the bike sprocket and the motor sprocket would be on the same side, mounting brackets wouldn't align, and etc. There is just to much to deal with for no reason. With hat said, it takes a maverick to think outside the box! Keep thinking, and thanks for watching!!! 😎👍

No problem with the issues you've mentioned, I'm in the dark as far as if it would run that way as far as the motor itself. I hope to hear back from you, thanks.

I've been wondering if maybe I need to get a longer intake since I changed to the f4 Thrust pipe, do you know if it would improve my engine to elongate the intake pipe?
@SouthernCustomCC
@SouthernCustomCC 4 жыл бұрын
The longer hoses actually create a delay in response the longer they are. I'd first sample the height of my needle c-clip, then I'd check the jet. Even before that though, I'd upgrade the air filter because then you'd sample jet sizes to hone in on a proper tune. Happy building!

Do you have any leaks from under the jug since the port's don't line up?
@SouthernCustomCC

Not yet, and I don't expect to get any leaks because even though the ports don't match, they are entirely covered on too an bottom. Will be working on the engine to make it faster...keep an eye out for a future vid! Thanks for watching.

I just got my first bike motor and I was wondering why the intake wasn't in front. I thought maybe because the exhaust needed the extra air flow to keep the temperature lower. Do you think you'll be more likely to overheat the motor?
@SouthernCustomCC
@SouthernCustomCC 4 жыл бұрын
That is an interesting assessment! My personal belief is that it was designed this way because it is the safest, ergonomically, for a rider. That exhaust is out if the way in a regular build. With the ’turned around’ method, the exhaust is more exposed in the danger zone of burning your shoe or calf. The factor to most likely overheat the engine is oil/gas ratio....some ride with a 20:1 and others 40:1.... That is a rider’s biggest and most direct factor to overheating rings and and piston while riding hot. I don't believe the backward method produces an effect one way or another on the relationship between heat and the engine. But once again...good analysis!

@SouthernCustomCC
@SouthernCustomCC 4 жыл бұрын
You can try very carefully to widen the diameter of the pin just a bit so that when it is inserted, it will be sure to be in the groove. I like the pins that look like the @ symbol and not so much the one's that look like € symbol. Hope that helps. Happy building.

@@SouthernCustomCC I've seen it done. You have to recut the key way on the magneto and adjust the timing. Not sure of all of the specifics but I saw it done on a trike with the engine mounted on the rear and the chain running forward. - ( felt I had to clarify that the engine was turned 180 mounted behind the seat facing rearward, running opposite rotation and the drive chain from the motor was stretching forward on the right side of the trike instead of rearward on the left as it would have been if mounted in front of the seatpost.)
