Up next guitarist Dave “the Snake” Sabo from late 80s premier hard rock groups Skid Row tells the story of the anthem that started it all. “Youth Gone Wild” Snake Sabo was actually good friends with the biggest selling rock frontman of the late 80s, John Bon Jovi and was actually in Bon Jovi early on but it didn’t work out so John Bon Jovi helped his friend to get a record deal and then had the rookie and his band Skid Row open for him on his stadium tour. Within a few weeks of playing this song the student surpassed the teacher as the opening band Skid Row was getting a bigger ovation than the head liner! The interview and story is coming up next.

Hey Music Junkies, Professor of Rock always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all time. if you remember your first rock concert with joy and nostalgia YOu’ll dig this channel of musical memories. Make sure to, subscribe below right now so you always get our latest interviews and stories
I’m excited to bring you another episode from our series Revelations, where featured artists go deep on their greatest songs. The summer of 1989 was electric. It’s up there interns of blockbuster movies, You had Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and Batman, Lethal Weapon 2, Dead Poets Society, Ghostbusters 2, Field of Dreams, SO many great albums were released heading into and during that glorious summer too. Pixies Dolittle, The Cure Disintegration, Tom Petty Full Moon Fever, The Cult Sonic Temple, The Stone Roses debut, Don Henley the End of the innocence, Faith No More the real thing, Motley Crue Dr. Feelgood, and so many more. Pop radio was dominated that summer by Fine Young Cannibals, Milli Vanilli and Bobby Brown.
Hard Rock and Heavy Metal was still holding it’s own as Guns N Roses released their follow up to Appetite for Destruction and new bands like Tesla and Warrant were making their voices heard. One band that began a steady rise to the top was the rough and ready Skid Row. Their opening shot was a monstrous rebel anthem that scorched radio. Youth Gone Wild definitely made an impact on young kids coming of age and looking for any excuse to defy authority. And Youth Gone Wild was the best answer at that moment. Well band founder and guitarist and cowriter actually started out in Bon Jovi. He was good friends with John Bon Jovi and the two played together for a while.
It did’t work out, but Snake formed his own band and then they brought on young singer Sebastian Back who said that the first tape he heard of the band’s demo’s that Youth Gone Wild spoke to him perfectly. In fact, he even got the title tattooed on his arm. Well, Skid Row was locked and loaded and John Bon Jovi was a good friend, as he helped the band get a record deal and even set them up to open for Bon Jovi on his New Jersey tour. A few weeks into the tour, Skid Row was dominating in the opening spot and word travelled that the rookie band was blowing the headliner off the stage.
I can tell you from my own experience that the scuttlebutt wasn’t false. Skid Row and Bon Jovi was one of my first concerts. I went for Bon Jovi and can honestly say that Skid Row blew Bon Jovi off the stage.

I agree with this 100%. I also think their 3rd album (& last one with Bach) is criminally underrated. Victim of the right album at the wrong time, just didn't fit the zeitgeist of the moment, although they tried. And I don't think their label did them any favors with promotion.

I was a teen in the 70's and 80's and to this day I still can't comprehend when/why kids say, and said back then like told here, that they felt "alienated", or seperated from society, etc. etc...Back then we ruled the damn world! That's how we saw it. If you didn't like us for what we were, what we stood for, or how we lived, YOU were the problem and WE "ALIENATED" YOU from us and our world. Didn't understand that back then and now today that feeling is even stronger. Makes no sense to me and it never will.

Dare I say, one of the best debut albums from that era. One of the few that you could put on and not have to skip a track. In my opinion, Youth Gone Wild is the Skids “Welcome to the Jungle.” And the album could easily be compared to Appetite For Destruction. Being from Jersey myself and a junior in high school at the time, we saw these guys in the clubs and to this day, they still bring the same amount of energy live.

That first album hit hard. I played it through so many times the tape wore thin. Then Slave came out and was even harder! I recall seeing them with Pantera as an opener. Can you believe that bill? It was a small venue also so every seat was a good seat, but my friend and I were close enough to feel Rex's sweat fly by as he whipped his hair around. What Skid Row had with Sebastian Bach was magical. It's just a shame it had to come to an end. I'm glad the boys are still doing well. They are a talented group of artists.

I turned 16 in '89 and got my license. A mile or two from my house was a road with a bunch of small hills. If you were going the right speed you could hit each hill to the beat of Youth Gone Wild. I still blast that tune and sing at the top of my lungs with my kids in the car, just slightly slower now. ;)

Wow, just listened to this album a couple of days ago. Takes me right back to freshman year in high school. I think I listened the most to Big Guns, Youth Gone Wild, I Remember You, and Midnight the most. As a black teen, my high school clique was the Black, Hispanic, and White kids that didn't fit in with anyone else and we all had a love of all kinds of music, including metal and alternative which wasn't popular for black kids to listen to back then or admit to listening to. Prince, Micheal Jackson, Tony! Toni! Tone!, Skid Row, Guns & Roses, Motley Crue, AC/DC, Faith No More, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane's Addiction, Arrested Development, Janet Jackson, Mary J Blige, Jodeci, SWV, Living Colour, Queensryche, Metallica, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Blind Melon, Hole, and other groups were on our mixed tapes.

Skid Row's debut release was excellent in every way. It had attitude, feeling, power, fun, tragedy, great hooks, singable choruses, and technical talent. I, too, wore out the cassette. I was so excited when I saw that they were touring with Bon Jovi. At that point I was getting a bit tired of Bon Jovi being overplayed, but I had liked their stuff from their beginnings. I knew they would put on a good show. I'm not sure that I would say that Skid Row blew Bon Jovi away. Jon and crew played a great show for us as well, but Skid Row absolutely held their own. They had the energy, excellence, and had captivated the crowd.

Absolutely agree, Skid Row was placed into the wrong category of hair metal. They were purely a badass hard rock band with hints of metal. To be real, by 1989 the scene was very stale. I blame the fact that by this time there was only one arbiter of what was popular: MTV. How this is important might take a bit, please bear with. The '70s were a blast of innovation in music. The Beatles had kick started it in the studio with George Martin guiding them, by the time they broke up they had inspired an entire generation of young musicians to say "What if..." and before long these kids were going in so many different directions that it was confusing. The record companies were gambling. They would sign an act, promote it, and then cross their fingers that the public would buy it. MTV going live changed that, made things easier for them. All they had to do was make a video and pay for air time and it would be a hit. How big of one still depended on the fans, but at the least they would recoup their investment plus a profit at minimum. This killed the need for new acts to have a distinct sound to get play. They just had to look right. That's why there were a kajillion hair metal bands that you couldn't tell apart. Next to them Skid Row might have been "hard", but yeah, they paled next to the bands you mention plus Iron Maiden, Metallica, a few others.

Skid Row was my very first concert whwn they opened for Guns N Roses in Summer of 1991. They were so good. You had Dave Sabo on? I would have paid you to ask him and am not joking either, what has to happen to get more of the pro shot video footage released from both the Slave to the Grind tour and their first album tours? My God do I want to go back.

I was lucky enough to see Skid Row and Bad Company open up for BonJovi. Skid Row was in their prime and even though Bon Jovi had a huge stage setup with full pyro and all that. Didn’t matter. Skid Row blew them away. They were hungry and had tons of energy and they sounded awesome! Great memories!! Thanks Professor!!!🎸🎸🤘🤘

Oh man this song rocks so hard! I was so late to the party on this band. This is the first song I heard from them and I heard it on my local rock station 98 Rock in 1999 while walking to work one day on my Walkman. I've love this band ever since. I'll be in the small crowd that loves Subhuman Race as my favorite album. Their album after Bach's departure Thickskin was well received by my ears. Slave to the Grind is monterous! That debut album really is something special! Midnight/Tornado is my favorite song. I highly recommend their new album The Gangs All Here. It has the same energy and ferocity as that debut over 30 years later, Snake can still shred !🤘

My entire life revolves around the Summer of 1989 either before or after that time. In April of that year I took my younger cousin, who was more of a brother to me to Phoenix for Spring break. At the time I was just 16 years old soon to be 17 in June, he had just turned 13, it's kind of crazy thinking back now, how our generation lived & did things so differently than todays kids who have helicopter parents! At the time his Mother , my Aunt, was well into a several years bout with cancer. I just felt he needed a mental break so we went off to visit a super close friend who had moved there to go to DeVry University. We had also gone the previous year which was 1988, but this year was totally different. While there we heard on the radio that Bon Jovi was going to be playing a show with Skid Row as the opening act. We were kind of familiar with Skid Row as their music had recently been showing up on the radio, however it was Bon Jovi who we knew of for sure. I purchased us some tickets to the show which was on April 20, 1989 at the Compton Terrace in Chandler AZ which was an outside venue. That show blew my mind for sure, the traffic jam on the freeway in and out, the girls and their barely there clothing or totally transparent lace outfits, and the airplane that was dropping CD's T-Shirts and who knows what else over the crowd. It was mind blowing to say the least, luckily I had taken a 35 MM Camera and also a disposable camera, so we got some awesome photos to remember. I have to say that Skid Row totally blew Bon Jovi away, we were Gob Smacked by just how great they were. What a show, What a time, What a place!!! Although we had to come home to reality with his Mom being near the end, I know that we both had a great time in Phoenix that Spring Break. Unfortunately not many days later his Mom lost her battle to the cancer that she tried so hard to beat. On April 30, 1989 she took her last breath! That May as we buried her body, we were all forced to become young Men & Women, she left behind 7 children. That summer was the Summer of Our Youth, and things went totally out of control for many years afterward, we all spiraled out of control with alcohol and drugs, including my Uncle who had not drank in years. Eventually I lost my little Bro in 2003 at just 27 years old, he hung himself after a fight with his girlfriend. Although I can always feel his presence I always go back to the memories of the Summer of 89 and the Bon Jovi, Skid Row concert at the Compton Terrace, Damn What A Show & What Great Memories!!!!

I met him in 1997. He was in NW Indian at the time playing solo gigs. A friend of mine worked at a local music store, and he told me that Dave was suppose to come in around to get some guitar strings for his show later that night. Jumped in my car and took off to the store. I walked in and my friend was behind the counter. He pointed to the string section so I walked over there. I was expecting a crowd of people around him so I was shocked to see him standing there with one other guy. They're was no one else in the store so I walked up and introduced myself as a huge fan. We ended up talking for about a half hour about all kinds of things. It was like talking to one of my friends absolutely no ego what so ever. He had to leave so I thanked him for chatting and asked for a autograph and a Pic with him. He said yes to both he signed a Pic for me then put him arm around my shoulder for a picture . Great guy
