Up next guitarist Dave “the Snake” Sabo from late 80s premier hard rock groups Skid Row tells the story of the anthem that started it all. “Youth Gone Wild” Snake Sabo was actually good friends with the biggest selling rock frontman of the late 80s, John Bon Jovi and was actually in Bon Jovi early on but it didn’t work out so John Bon Jovi helped his friend to get a record deal and then had the rookie and his band Skid Row open for him on his stadium tour. Within a few weeks of playing this song the student surpassed the teacher as the opening band Skid Row was getting a bigger ovation than the head liner! The interview and story is coming up next.

I’m excited to bring you another episode from our series Revelations, where featured artists go deep on their greatest songs. The summer of 1989 was electric. It’s up there interns of blockbuster movies, You had Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and Batman, Lethal Weapon 2, Dead Poets Society, Ghostbusters 2, Field of Dreams, SO many great albums were released heading into and during that glorious summer too. Pixies Dolittle, The Cure Disintegration, Tom Petty Full Moon Fever, The Cult Sonic Temple, The Stone Roses debut, Don Henley the End of the innocence, Faith No More the real thing, Motley Crue Dr. Feelgood, and so many more. Pop radio was dominated that summer by Fine Young Cannibals, Milli Vanilli and Bobby Brown.
Hard Rock and Heavy Metal was still holding it’s own as Guns N Roses released their follow up to Appetite for Destruction and new bands like Tesla and Warrant were making their voices heard. One band that began a steady rise to the top was the rough and ready Skid Row. Their opening shot was a monstrous rebel anthem that scorched radio. Youth Gone Wild definitely made an impact on young kids coming of age and looking for any excuse to defy authority. And Youth Gone Wild was the best answer at that moment. Well band founder and guitarist and cowriter actually started out in Bon Jovi. He was good friends with John Bon Jovi and the two played together for a while.
It did’t work out, but Snake formed his own band and then they brought on young singer Sebastian Back who said that the first tape he heard of the band’s demo’s that Youth Gone Wild spoke to him perfectly. In fact, he even got the title tattooed on his arm. Well, Skid Row was locked and loaded and John Bon Jovi was a good friend, as he helped the band get a record deal and even set them up to open for Bon Jovi on his New Jersey tour. A few weeks into the tour, Skid Row was dominating in the opening spot and word travelled that the rookie band was blowing the headliner off the stage.
I can tell you from my own experience that the scuttlebutt wasn’t false. Skid Row and Bon Jovi was one of my first concerts. I went for Bon Jovi and can honestly say that Skid Row blew Bon Jovi off the stage.
