As a guitar player listening to pop radio back then, you heard Rebel Yell and knocked you out! There were no other guitar players like Steve Stevens with that combination of raw energy, massive dives and bends, scratching picks, incredible dexterity on scales and imagination on other unique techniques that had not been invented yet. He is definitely a Guitar God and what makes him so good is that he is like Alex from Rush in that he services the song and not his ego. I actually put them in the same category in that they make their songs better without dominating the sonic space and yet the incredible artistry that Stevens exhibits is nothing less than perfection. Just Love it, the interview was so good! Thanks Prof :)

Some guitarists are overlooked because they are “sidemen,” or part of bands so big they become anonymous. Billy Idol has long credited Stevens as being responsible for 75 percent of the songwriting between them. He’s a dynamite showman and kills on electric and acoustic with equal flair. His solo on Rebel Yell is a true composition. You can sing it and it holds up on its own. A great touch on the instrument.

Under rated? Everyone I knew, growing up in the 80s, thought he was one of the top guitarist. I think we may not have known how great and versatile he was, unless we went to concert.
@riproar112 жыл бұрын
@MJ CS "under-rated guitarist" Says who?? Says you?? He created whole new ways for a guitarist to affect a song. Listen to "White Wedding" where rather than playing chords he's strumming riffs that don't follow the rhythm of the song at all, but have their own role. Then he recorded that guitar solo that WAS Top Gun. Billy Idol and Steve should have written a sequel song called, "Rock the Cradle Some More!"
@mjcs63992 жыл бұрын
@@cl5619 Yes, underrated. I rarely see him mentioned in top guitarist lists. I know they're kind of impossible to compile, but he really is THAT good. Also, your last point is spot on, and explains why he is underrated; the albums only show a very small subset of what he can do, and only in concert does he get featured in a way where you can really see what he can do. From a local, thanks for covering this awesome tune. In previous shows you've mentioned something that I recall being very prominent in the Salt Lake valley, the cliques that were formed depending on the music that one listened to. With the onslaught of new music being released in the late 70's into the 80's, the coterie was an identifier and a form of social posturing. There were the mods, wavers, punks, rockers and head bangers to name a few. When hearing Rebel Yell, or anything from Billy and Steve from this time, the first thing that comes to mind is the breaking up of genre barriers. Seeing Billy Idol live was mind blowing in many ways, but so fascinating to me at the time, was the bringing together of all the circles. Mixed amongst the crowd were rockers, punks and mods. Something I had not seen the likes of prior. Billy's ability to reach out and tickle the ears of almost everyone was a sort of magic. Their genre fluidity or fusion if you will, was untouched at the time, especially when music had become such a social identifier. ✌️

That's fascinating. And totally makes sense. I remember visiting SLC in the 1990s and seeing the kids lined up for hardcore punk and death metal shows. I hit a couple clubs playing black metal back then. That scene blew me away.

Always loved the work Steve did with Billy Idol, his own Atomic Playboys and the work on Top Gun. Would love to hear Professor do an interview with Billy Idol.

I love that gentle side of Billy Idol songs like eyes without a face. And I love what Steven said about that first take. Steve Perry said the same thing. And for a singer myself i e learned there's something special about the First Take... but I think we need all those hair pulling following efforts to make us realize that.

The ray gun thing is an amazing part of the story. It always helps to be eccentric when making music.

"Rebel Yell" is one of those songs that I just don't get tired of hearing. It was a favorite dance tune at school dances, too. Air guitar heaven!

Stevens is probably the most underrated guitar player of that era. I've always appreciated his work.

Steve Stevens is recognized and highly respected by guitar players but he doesn't get name-checked quite as much by the public at large for some reason. Truly one of the great hard rock guitarists of the last 40 years.

Rebel Yell is electric! The lyrics, sound, beat and feel fit like a glove together. I would have never guessed it came for a whiskey I have seen Keith drinking many times. The ray gun sound effect story was cool too, I thought it was a synthesizer. Fantastic interview professor many cool facts. More More More,lol

I remember being on the lake during a hot Oklahoma summer, fishing with my family and listening to this album on a walkman. I played it until the battery ran out, reading the liner notes over and over. I took me a few more years to know who Steve Stevens was, but his influence was never forgotten - followed him since.
