Cyndi Lauper penned this for a concept album that she never got to record. One day at Crescent Moon studios in Miami, while recording her new album, Ellie came across the music sheet and lyrics and played the song impromptu on the piano. That day Cyndi was visiting Gloria Estefan at the studios to co-write some songs and stumbled upon Ellie singing this. So impressed was Cyndi that she bestowed the song to Ellie. This won best song at the Oscars 1986.

Fading in, fading out On the edge of paradise Every inch of your skin is a Holy Grail I've gotta find Only you can set my heart on fire, on fire Yeah, I'll let you set the pace 'Cause I'm not thinking straight My head spinning around, I can't see clear no more What are you waiting for? Love me like you do, love me like you do Love me like you do, love me like you do Touch me like you do, touch me like you do What are you waiting for? Love me like you do, love me like you do (like you do) Love me like you do, love me like you do (yeah) Touch me like you do, touch me like you do What are you waiting for? I'll let you set the pace 'Cause I'm not thinking straight My head spinning around, I can't see clear no more What are you waiting for? Love me like you do, love me like you do (like you do) Love me like you do, love me like you do (yeah) Touch me like you do, touch me like you do What are you waiting for? In 1985, I was riding my BMX while listening to a song on my ghetto blaster. It was raining heavily, and my mind was filled with thoughts and flashbacks from my prom night. I was upset that my crush was leaving for college, so I decided to visit her. I held up my blaster and played the same song. Suddenly, she ran outside barefooted and kissed me passionately in the rain. It was a magical moment that I will never forget.

This takes me back to the glorious days back in elementary school in 1985 when this song first came out. I remember this little quirky blonde girl named Heather came up to me during a school dance and asked if I wanted to dance to this song. I laughed at her and yelled to her to fuck off. I was a little prick at the time and enjoyed other artists like Aerosmith and Def Leppard, and was kind of a rebel who liked picking on others. I kept bullying Heather for most of middle school, along with other schoolmates, until highschool when I moved out of state for my father's work. I did not return to my hometown until years later after finishing college, and wondered whatever happened to her. I happened to come across her at a local gas station, not far from my new house. She was beautiful, far from that little nerdy girl who wore no makeup, used glasses and kept her hair up. She looked stunning, with no glasses, her beautiful blonde hair flowing freely, wearing a gorgeous white summer dress. We talked for a bit and then I asked her to go for coffee and talk about the good old days. I apologized profusely since I had changed completely and regretted all I did. We talked all night that night and soon became really good friends. Two years later I proposed to her and in December of 2002 we got married, we were now on our late 20s. It was a beautiful ceremony filled with family and friends who couldn't believe we ended up together, and we consummated our love that night to this same song. It was the happiest moment of my life. Heather died from cancer on April of 2014, and I miss her every day with all of my heart. Every time I hear this song it reminds me of that day at school and how mean and disgusting I was to her during those early years. It brings tears to my eyes just thinking of how she is not longer with me, and how I never could apologize enough for those horrible things I said. Now I just cry every time I hear this song and wish I could go back in time to elementary school and have that first dance with my Heather.

Throwback inbound! Ah, this takes me back- The year was 1986. I was on my first date with my girlfriend back in Baltimore. I picked her up in my all black '76 300D Mercedes, real neck breaker. We went down to Hammerjacks on a friday night to unwind from a long work week. After we wore ourselves out dancing the night away, we retired to Great American Melting Pot [or "Gampy's" as we called it in the day]. I ordered her a 8 ounce steak, mac n cheese with a lemonade- and myself a Monte Cristo with mountain dew. What a night it was for us. About halfway through the remainder of the night at Gampy's, Ellie Goulding's "Love Me Like You Do" started playing on the speakers above. Time seemed to just come to a halt. I looked beside me, and something came over me- and she was all I saw at that moment. Her soft but wavy hazelnut hair, her baby pink nails and deep atlantic eyes, everything about her just seemed to glow. She looked up at me with this warming smile that melted me like an otter pop freezie in the middle of the summer heat. "Yes, can I help you?" She laughed. I just gazed blankly into her eyes with this deep passion I couldn't rid myself of. She just sort of tilted her head in confusion and I slowly leaned in and gave her a kiss. It had been at that moment that I realized I had fallen head over heels for this girl. What would my parents say? What about hers? Hell... What does it matter- if this is love, I need to just grab it by the reins and try to hold on for the ride. That kiss seemed to last an eternity and the rush I got wasn't like anything I had endured before-- no race, near death experience with the lads, no fight, no success could amount to the addiction I had developed out of her. Shocked, she just kind of looked at me with a theoretical question mark on her face. All I could reply with is "It's you". She wouldn't know until later that I fell in love with her when I proposed. I've now been married to her 30 years today and every time I hear this timeless classic, I'm reminded of her and everything we have ever been through, and these years up until now have been nothing but magic.

Ah how I remember going to Ellie goulding's 1985 anything could happen tour, it was so beautiful the stage was so simple and the crowds were crazy even crazier then madonna and when she performed this as the encore everyone was in the tears it was the most magical moment of my life😂

this original version from 1985 is still better, still a goodjob to the daughter of Ellie by remaking it once again. 🧡

This was played on my Prom party. My friends said to Eric, my crush, that he should invite me to the dance floor, and he did. It was the best night of my live. We put this song in the radio every anniversary, and dance along. Love you Ellie

I don't know how you did it or how the others 80'sfied our current music, but it has even turned songs I dislike into songs I love. It's hilarious. I do have some feedback. I feel the drums are a bit loud. Aside from that it's perfect! Thanks for sharing

Agreed on the drums... I had to select "Movie" equalization on my Soundbase just to get them to calm-down, so it'd sound more like RIAA equalization was used in the day.

Thanks for the feedback! A few folks have commented that the drums are a bit too loud. I tried to "beef" them up a bit by adding a bit of compression, but I think I went a bit overboard. At some stage I'll probably replace them entirely with a slightly softer drum track.

@@BogginMashups Not so soft please... 😊 The strong beat is typical of the 80's.

I found my parents wedding video in the attic and I totally fell in love with this song. Dad was so handsome with that bowtie and back in the eighties my mom had a dark hair and now she always nags my dyed black hair.

I remember listening to this song on the radio in 85’ when it first released. Whenever it came on, I blasted my music from my car while I was on the road or doing outside chores. Such memories...

Can't believe her daughter has her exact voice and made a new version a few years ago. Timeless.
