1989 had one of the greatest summer movie lineups of the decade. A lot of classics came out between May-August.

I saw Batman the night before having major surgery on my chest. It was scary because I was young and I remember worrying it would be my last time in a movie theater or my last movie ever. After seeing it I had more courage, especially because my parents bought me the iconic t-shirt to wear to the hospital.

I remember when some friends and I went to see *_Star Trek V: The Final Frontier_* one night. However, there was a problem with the film/projector and the film wouldn't start, so we went to see *_Great Balls of Fire!_* instead. Afterwards they got ST:V working so we were allowed to go see it. We got to see 2 movies for the price of 1!

This video brings back the memories for sure. I remember (as a kid of 7 in 1989) going to the local drive in movie theater and seeing the Batman movie with Michael Keaton. Big Trouble In Little China remains one of my absolute favorite movies to this day. I’ll make time to watch it anytime I can stream it for free. Life was so much simpler then for sure.

Kentucky Fried Chicken- That variation of the song, "Hit The Road Jack" is pretty catchy. I can see myself singing along every time I see this commercial. Lemon Fresh Clorox- 🎶 Them Lemons They Roll, Them Lemons They Bounce, I Even See A Lemon Drop...🎶 I wish this jingle was longer. It's so catchy and fun to sing along with. I like how a lemon bounces down the stairs and a girl watches it do so nonchalantly.

1989 was a great year for me. Ghostbusters 2, my 9th birthday and then BATMAN! If it wasn't for all the cigarette smoke I'd go back in heartbeat... Just to see Batman on real 35mm film and for McDonald's french fries back when they were still crispy, delicious and fried in beef tallow

I remember when my local newspaper did a review of Karate Kid part 3. He mentioned that a lot of people either walked out 1/2 way through, or spent more time just hanging out at the concession stand as opposed to watching the movie.

There are a *lot* of bad movie sequels but it's rare to see one that's so universally disparaged by pretty much everyone...from the fans to the lead actor and director. It also seems that Ralph Macchio, Pat Morita and director John G. Avildsen were all contractually obligated to do another film, so it's not a surprise that a movie where everyone involved didn't actually want to make it turned out bad.
@trunkwontopen2 жыл бұрын
@@80sCommercialVault Yeah, I never really checked into seeing if that was the case, but, more than likely, it probably was. IT just...didn't have that same feel to it; it hit a low ceiling and just spurred out into nothing and ended so abruptly, probably because there was no 'rooting for the good guy' from within it's audience.
@andrewhudson71082 жыл бұрын
@@80sCommercialVault John originally wanted the third one to be where Danny and Miyagi were back in Japan and they’d learn through flashbacks about the first Okinawans who learned martial arts over in China. But the studio passed on that idea.
@80sCommercialVault2 жыл бұрын
It's been a while since I've seen the third movie, but it felt like the basic plot with Daniel facing Cobra Kai at another karate tournament would have worked better as a direct sequel, and the third film would have worked better with the Okinawa subplot.
@trunkwontopen2 жыл бұрын
@@80sCommercialVault Oh man... Imagine if they did it that way. KK2: Cobra Kai revenge, KK3, Okinawa. They could have stretched that nose honk joke from the beginning of the second one to the end of the third and it would have been epic.

Big Trouble in Little China...One of John Carpenter's most underappreciated films, and a great action comedy.

The main thing I remember about Great Balls of Fire is the episode of Muppets Tonight in the 90s where Dennis Quaid was the host, and there was a running gag throughout the episode of him going into his Jerry Lee Lewis impression. Great episode, and also notable for a subplot concerning Kermit the Frog going on a date with Gilbert Gottfried. (Kermit had a "Win a Date with Kermit" contest, and Gilbert was the only entry who wasn't Miss Piggy.)

Since I wasn't old enough to see the Star Wars Trilogy in the theater, Batman was the first Summer Movie I remember being a pop culture event. I mean, people were getting the Bat symbol shaved in their heads that summer. Other studios tried to mimic its marketing (notably Disney with Dick Tracy the following year), but nothing quite compared until Jurassic Park in 93.
@jalenjohnson16622 жыл бұрын
I wasn’t born for another two years afterwards, but the marketing of that film has always fascinated me. Just amazing how a films marketing can just infiltrate pop culture in that way. I don’t think I’ve seen anything quite like it in my lifetime.

The logo for Batman 89 has to be one of the most iconic ever produced for a movie and was pretty much all that was used to market the film. The funny thing is that the emblem on Keaton's batsuit in the movie didn't match the logo used so heavily in the marketing/merchandising of the film. For "Batman Returns" the suit was altered to match the logo that had become so iconic.

Big Trouble In Little China-remake is still stuck in development hell..can be a good thing The Reporters-had this show stuck around it couldve been Fox's answer to Dateline,20/20 and 48 Hours Star Trek V: The Final Frontier-asked the immortal question,"What does God need with a starship?" Batman-looks like Keaton might be the only bright spot about The Flash movie next year it seems.. The Karate Kid Part III-fingers crossed that Mike Barnes reappears in the next season of Cobra Kai

I didn’t know they were even attempting a remake of Big Trouble In Little China. I’m gonna be honest here when I say I hope it stays in development hell. Some ppl may disagree with me when I say I don’t like remakes. Most of the time they are revisions instead of remakes imo. Pet Cemetery remake is good example. Big Trouble was perfect for what it was when it was made. They should come up with new idea for new movies rather than trying to cash in someone else’s past success
