Seeing Spuds Mackenzie reminds me of the Bloom County comic strip. There was a storyline where two of the characters, Opus the Penguin and Bill the Cat, were running for President, but they were constantly being beaten in the polls by Spuds Mackenzie. Then Spuds political career faced turmoil when he was involved in a drunk driving incident, which caused him to also lose his job as the Bud Light spokesperson. His position for Bud Light was filled in by the Care Bears. God, I love that comic.

Any other 80's kids here watching this channel ever have a moment like what I'm about to describe?: You'll watch some of the earlier 80's years videos and you may say "That looks very 80's" but you don't get a personal connection, but then you'll reach an upload from a year where memory starts to kick in, and suddenly it's "oh yeah, i remember this!". Well apparently i reached that point here with 1987. Super nostaligic. I haven't seen those Keebler Tater Skins commercials in years....

@scottbaino I have early 80's memories (I was born in the late 70's) but they revolve around watching Saturday morning cartoons or weekday afternoon cartoons. On the other hand, memories of "just random commercials", like the type I'm seeing on this channel, those don't kick in until 1986 at the earliest (for me, anyway).

Those McDonalds commercials had such a charm to them and managed to retain it after all these years. The Beach Boys show Promo and Ending remind me of the Full House episode where they performed a concert and DJ won tickets to see them.

McDonald's really had great advertising back in the day that could appeal to a large range of audiences. They had the McDonaldland commercials for the kids, the family-oriented heartwarming ones, and the energetic ones. It did a great job of selling the product to a variety of consumers. It's funny how I didn't realize how great it was until I started watching commercial compilations like this channel.
@Tr0nzoid4 жыл бұрын
I was just about to remark on that. Everything from the health backlash to the clown hysteria has ruined their advertising. Now the restaurants have lost their distinctive looks, the company practically has no mascots, and the service is something to completely avoid.

Also they're pretty much stuck with their menu as it currently stands, as the only thing that people reliably buy there are the mainstays. Every attempt to expand or diversify their menu in the last 20-30 years has been a failure.

@ultracartoonartist76354 жыл бұрын
Way back when television was more about storytelling. The commercials told the story didn't fill your mind up with just fear ,the one emotion that dominates today's advertising.. It emphasized the use of the product the story behind using the product. Plus they had theme songs that stuck in your head. This is what good advertisement looks like. Today they just don't have a lot of those elements anymore.
@bethdibartolomeo20424 жыл бұрын
They try to tell a story with drug ads these days, but it's so obvious that it's all staged that it's laughable. Everyone gathers together for strange outings, and the pill user NEVER looks sick. It's the kind of commercials RiffTrax were made for.
@ultracartoonartist76354 жыл бұрын
@@bethdibartolomeo2042 you know if you turn down the volume on today's commercials it would tell a totally different story. You would think it had absolutely nothing to do with the product. Aside from product placement of course.

After memories of Michael Jackson songs in the early to mid 80's, my memories of songs that I just could remember hearing on the radio all the time kick in with "Kokomo" by the Beach Boys in 1988. Yes, I think I was sheltered from music by my parents. But I loved "Kokomo". I also remember loving "Faith" by George Michael and "Wild, Wild West" by The Escape Club. I don't think my parents liked those songs as much. :-)

Back then most VHS video cassettes were over $100...since most tapes were meant to be bought by video rental stores, thus the term “rental priced”

It's crazy to think that people were enamored enough with VCR technology that they'd spend $61 in today's money for Top Gun.
@80sCommercialVault4 жыл бұрын
The average price of a new release VHS tape back then was $90-100...over $200 adjusted in today's money. That pricing model was meant to scare off the average consumer so that only rental places could afford to buy VHS tapes. Top Gun was one of the first VHS tapes to have ads before the movie started, and was sold at a much lower price point.
@Tr0nzoid2 жыл бұрын
That adjustment-for-inflation just doesn't work in this case. Buying a videotape for $25 was not perceived as spending much money on it. Still, it wouldn't be common for people to buy the average movie they wanted to watch rather than rent it until DVD came around.

@@80sCommercialVault well if I'm not mistaken, Barbara Ann was Jan and Dean, wasn't it? Barbara Ann was originally recorded by The Regents in 1961. Jan & Dean covered it in first in 1962 but this is a lesser known album track. The Beach Boys version from their 1965 "live" album Beach Boys Party! became a surprise hit single and is the version that most people recognize.
