The Puppeteer 777 LOL! That’s how I felt but it might change: A couple weeks ago I watched his video about adding security to a common KwikSet lock. In the video he talked about moving into a new place that had these KwikSet locks. Similarly, I just moved a week ago and someone stupidly installed the front door deadbolt with a keyhole on both sides and no way to lock/unlock from the inside. If I am separated from my keys by a wall of fire then I literally have to throw myself through the window to get out. Obviously, that’s a huge safety concern so I’m going to have to do something about it. What do you know? KwikSet.

I would give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that by "maximum security" they actually are referring to ANSI Grade I and are just assuming consumers would have no idea what ANSI Grade I means (which most people wouldn't). In that case it is certainly possible to exceed the minimum standard required to meet ANSI Grade I. I think they are referring to "maximum security" as a category, not literally referring to the maximum possible security.

@crookshanks2592 жыл бұрын
@@kokomo9764 Well you could probably make an "unpickable lock" which doesn't preclude it from having other points of failure. And it might even be possible to make a lock that literally cannot be opened without Key or combination but it would probably be to complicated and expensive to mass produce.
@kokomo97642 жыл бұрын
@crookshanks259 You are probably right. It would also be too expensive for the average person to buy. I don't own anything very valuable, so I'll just stick with Masterlock. At least I will know that if I lose the key, I can still get in.
@mdemers7672 жыл бұрын
@@kokomo9764 - No, there's that ONE that LPL couldn't do. I forget the maker (Bowley), but it was an incredible design. It had to have a steel key because it had this cutout ward running down the length of it. You had to stick it in, turn it 180º, push it in another 1/16 inch, and THEN turn it to engage the tumblers, which were protected completely within another cylinder within the lock cylinder. And there was a rotating sleeve that protected that cylinder, so you couldn't get a tension tool in there and effectively put any rotation tension on the cylinder OR use any sort of standard type picks to manipulate the tumblers. LPL did think he ~might~ be able to fashion some sort of special tools just to pick that one lock after gutting it to examine the design, be he actually sounded sort of doubtful, and he's never made a follow up of that sort, only a f/u to look at the beefy as hell padlock the same company made with the same type of lock cylinder, which actually had some security improvements over the last design. The only weaknesses were in the lock body and shackle design themselves IIRC. That is the ONLY time I've ever seen LPL defeated by a lock, and he actually sounded impressed, frustrated, and confused all at the same time xD.

"Exceeds maximum security" = "better than our other locks". To be fair to Kwikset, I've only twice had people get past them in my businesses, and both times that was by kicking in the door, not opening the lock. Would have been cheaper if they had picked the lock. I wouldn't have had to replace the door and frame as well as the lock.
@chrisedwards38666 жыл бұрын
You can reinforce the door frame. That costs more than a lock, but it's a lot cheaper and easier than dealing with a break in. @@carlpine6596 The biggest problems with the product go far beyond the lack of any serious pick resistance. But if anyone cared, this would not be the number one volume selling lock brand in the world. The MAX security model must include their reinforced strike plate. The strike plate DOES make it better than any lock that only comes with a door frame-hole decorative plate.

I was a locksmith and safe technician for 20 years in a family business. I think what is driving the quality of the locks down to a certain degree is every big box and local hardware store churning out out of spec keys on poorly adjusted and maintained machines. I used one of those do-it-yourself machines in Lowes to cut some new keys when I moved into a new house, just to see how bad they were. They were 10 to 15 thousandths out front to back and key to key... and they still worked. I was shocked. I just couldn't believe it. Then I thought about it. The lock manufacturers don't really care about the consumers any more. They don't care about the quality of the product they are producing and they don't care about the security of the product and thus, ultimately, the end user. The lock manufacturers are allowing tolerances to slip so their retailers can rekey and service the products they sell so the retailers are incentivized to sell even more of that brand. We first saw this is the early 90's when Kwikset started offering pinning kits directly to retailers. Then it was training, packaged as part of their 'marketing'. Glad I got out when I did.
@SirOtterman4 жыл бұрын
Question: One thing I've always done on my doors when I move into a new place & replace the locks is set/aligned the deadbolts so that there is always pressure from the metal plate pushing up against it. It requires the door to be pulled towards you to release pressure for it to unlock. In my mind this makes it a bit harder to pick an otherwise standard lock because you can't get free rotation (especially if you didn't know that was done). I'm curious how much that would hinder (if any) someone beyond amateur picker...
@2A1C1downURnext4 жыл бұрын
I always switch out the locks, add a reinforcing plate, and add a larger strike plate, with tension against the bolt also. I bought one of the knob hooks from beyondlocks.com. every exterior door gets this setup.
@SirOtterman4 жыл бұрын
Good recommendation! I use a 1 piece top & bottom striker/frame that has gnarly screws like in those pictures. The door itself is solid wood but has similar reinforcements. I use a Schlage smart lock that I pinned & tweaked myself but will be swapping the core with an Assa after seeing how inherently challenging they are. My area gets a lot of break-ins so I'm extra cautious (not even any 1st story windows that aren't behind the wall 😊)
