May I suggest? Whenever you digging up these weird things that I have no idea what they are. Or if I would have ever enjoy them Could you tell us if? They're sweet. Bland. A bit savory And a few of the ways that you prepare them. Do you fry them? Boil them? Bake them? Or eat them raw. And maybe even some of the dishes you make out of them. It sure would be helpful.

When that Ube snapped right in front of the camera, trailing sticky purple strings of goo, my first thought was "He's buried an alien! He's composting it!" Quickly followed by the thought that it was a failed dessert experiment. I mean, you DO compost everything.

I joined the yam growing contest 2 years ago here in Okinawa Japan and watched your videos to learn how to grow yams and how to build soil with leaf mold , bio char , and composting etc, the first year I came 27 th with a 9 kg yield and this year just gone I got 2nd place with a 67 kg yield with my heaviest yam being 20 kg . The old boys around have been growing yams for years and they put everything into growing them like making platforms for the vines and having special fields set aside only to be used for their contest yams and for a noob like me to come in and take 2 nd place is not a easy feat. Thank you David for your videos , I couldn’t of done it with out You and our Lord Jesus Christ . By the way The winning yam was 150 kg 😮

David, I heard recently that Winged Beans are considered a staple crop and survival food in many places due to their unusually high caloric count for a bean. Can you speak to this? Do you have any experience growing them? Apparently the leaves are also good when young, and it produces tubers which are commonly eaten.

They are day length sensitive though. So you don’t get beans until fall unless you get an early freeze. Bonus is that due to the tuber it can be perennial if you live in a warmer climate. I’m in 9a and grew some that were supposed to be day length neutral…. But they weren’t really. I cut them down in late fall and mulched them really good but we have had 18 degree nights for 3 in a row now. So it prolly wasn’t enough…..

I tried growing them in North Florida and they didn't produce much at all. I think we got one pod.

I tried growing it in zone 7b Oklahoma and it took a really long time to produce pods. I planted them at start of May and got my winged beans in September. To me, it didn't taste that good. A little on the side of fibrous and it wasn't that prolific compare to the pole beans. Needless to say I won't be planting them again. But they do survive and produce in zone 7b.

Dioscorea are true yams not sweet potatoes. But I havd always heard they had a 12 month or longer growing season. How can you raise them north of south FL. What varieties can be raised in the north.

I’m in zone 10 north Florida. I’m trying to turn my yard into a food forest. I have an all grass yard, That I’m working around. I want to grow sweet potato but am not sure how much depth they need to grow and how do I deal with all this grass? Do i dig it out and fill in with dirt or do I plant on top of it with soil I put in?

Hi David, I have been planning on growing yams but I have heavy nematode pressure despite using many methods to reduce them, do you know if yams are susceptible to nematodes? If so what was the extent of the damage caused by them?

I’ve tried several times to grown them here in upstate NY with very success. I usually get some but they’re very small. They require a long very warm growing season. Maybe it would work up here in a green house better idk. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Multiple species of cultivated yams are invasive in the U.S. so it's highly recommended you don't plant them.
