This iteration of the Silvia (sold in United States and Canada as the Datsun 200SX and in Mexico as the Datsun Sakura), available as a 2-door hardtop coupe and a 3-door hatchback, was uniquely progressive in that it was originally intended to feature a rotary engine, designed and built by Nissan. The resulting unit was fairly unreliable, and forestalled production. Ironically, it shared a chassis code with the also ill-fated Mazda Cosmo, first Japanese production car to feature a rotary engine. The car was redesigned shortly after it was released and the Wankel power plant was replaced by a line of conventional piston engines based on the new Z-series engine. These included the Z20 and the turbocharged and fuel injected Z18ET. In USA/Canada the 200SX had the Z20E with H165 rear axle from 1979-1981. From 1982--1983, it had a Z22E engine with H190 rear axle. Vehicles with engines over 2000cc are still considered "compact" vehicles under Japanese regulations regarding engine size

Those 4 extra things in the zip lock baggie are one lug nut from each wheel that were replaced with a locking lug nut. And the trunk lining is not stock. Those clips on the seats were for the 3 point seat belts that were originally used so when you get in you pull it across your chest.Normally they would be secured on the B pillar that is no longer on the vehicle.

I had one of these. Bought it for $800 sitting with the parents of the original owner. They had no idea what they had. I had no idea what I bought. I was just thinking "Cool! A convertible!" I put around $3000 into it restoring it, practically rebuilt the engine. Had to get it reupholstered and a new convertible top since the original got thrashed. I was 18 or 19 at the time. This was 2010-ish I had it. It looked identical to yours. Drove it for a few years until one day I got pulled over for not wearing a seat belt. The seat belts in the car were lap belts with no shoulder strap I put in because you guessed it, the originals were thrashed. Officer told me the car wasn't street legal and I got off with a warning but told me to make it street legal or stop driving it. I was broke, made little money, just moved out on my own, and had no money to keep spending on the car. I had a beater of a truck I could drive for work. Said fuck it and sold it on Craigslist for... $800. Honestly I knew the car was a collectors car but didn't know exactly how few of them were made. I imagine if I had thought about it a little more and had a place to keep it safely I would never have sold it.

Nice, I've only seen one of these so far and it was a hard top, I was driving down the highway in my z31 turbo with the t-tops down one day and saw another z31 with a terribly done convertible conversion, worst part of all is that it was a great day and they had the roof on, I gave them the most disapproving look I could muster.

There was one of these offered for sale in PA near me. It was the only one I ever saw in person, and this is the second one I've ever seen. I had to take it for a test drive. Interesting car!

I drove a grey one in PA and it was a stick. Probably the only one I'll ever see in person or drive, because they are very, very rare, like he says. They drive like bigger cars than they are, and the engine is tuned for a forklift. Torque peak is something like 1900rpm, so it steps out like a bigger motor, it's only like 100hp but it all comes in down low....The power comes on like a diesel.

I wish I hadn't gotten rid of my 82 200SX. It had nice acceleration with that Nissan Z engine and rear wheel drive. The voice on my car was a woman, and it was annoying but not as creepy as the one on this car.

I had an 82 but mine wasn't convertible. I honestly clicked this video because I wanted to see if this one had the same voice warnings like mine had. Mine sounded like they had hired a 19 year old model to speak into a recorder.

Actually, that 200sx thingy that went where the plate was supposed to go was probably part of the roadster conversion...If this were mine that would go into storage and the license plate would go back where it belongs. I think that is just a tacky addition to an otherwise good looking car.

@coochadamus If I remember correctly, the voice was originally a female electronic voice in these 200SXs, It sounded like whatever the source of the voice was was actually dragging in this car. The car's ability to talk to you was definitely one of the things that I thought was very cool about it in the early 80s.

American Custom Coachworks LTD The sons of the original owner obviously didn't have as much fun driving this car into the grave ( like we did ). To be fair slowly developing leaks and our mother cleaning the custom vinyl rear window with a damaging chemical forever clouding the view probably contributed the most decay? Don't think the voice is working correctly in this video ( recording is time warped ) and sounds male? But then again we might have had a female version who instead of saying key is in the ignition... Would say, "a door is ajar"? ( we would have to correct her, "No... A door is a door. Not a jar" ) There were a series of these made by American Custom Coachworks LTD as I remember and this probably was part of that series. ( NOT some custom designed to order"one offs" sold at an exorbitant price. ) We got ours at Auction when the car was still new ( early 80's ) and did not pay any significant amount as suggested by the video's sales "pitch". Not that a pitch is needed because with the top down the car was a joy at the beach in the summer ( had the car for a year when I lived in O.C.! ) And is in amazing condition! ( Top obviously was a lot more water resistant... or the this car was stored well and if really at 53k... obviously used sparingly? ) Not sure the video does justice to what was, ( in it's time ) a very novel dashboard when lit at night.
