Living with ME is a huge challenge that nobody apart from another sufferer can understand because you look perfectly normal. I feel there is still a stigma around it. Even though a consultant told me in front of my husband he still doesnt quite understand. I explain it to people as a having a brain condition that effects me differently day to day and explain spoon theory to them and that helps. Planning is the best we can do but something as you say like a bee sting will just throw everything. I broke my toe and that just threw me for about a month. then one morning I work up and was back to my normal. You seem to have a good understanding of the condition take it easy

Agree with this comment completely. I am 4.5 years into Long Covid, something that lots of people don’t believe is happening! Lost my job etc. I’m still trying to work it all out and trying to pace but I am ill daily and can’t seem to find a baseline at all. So my sympathies are with you totally. Any small thing (small to others but not small to us) can set things off. Taking care of yourself is a must. Well done for continuing to deal with this. It’s not easy but we all stand together in this fight and we will get through.❤

@@lib8522 I’m so sorry you are going through this. I’ve often heard people describe long COVID & thought how similar it sounds to ME & MS. My MS was as a result of shall we say a little p rick . Prior to that I was fit & healthy & was always out hiking in nature. One p rick & I lost everything, my home, my career, my husband who is still incidentally my best mate. I really do hope you will be ok & get the answers you deserve because you surely do deserve to know exactly what happened to cause this. It’s looking like there are quite a lot of us Spoonies in Sean’s comments. Annie🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Can you consider membrane to cover some large areas soon? You can keep the grass and weeds in check and use the large rectangles as a prop to check that you are happy with the design? Because with the ME (which sounds horrendous I have to say) it looks like you really need something like this to help you turn your big ideas into reality. And the weeds are growing and gathering strength, maybe faster than you are. I would hate for your Rusty Homestead to look like your would-have-been allotment, which looks like only napalm can fix it now.

Good evening Sean, it's been a busy few days for you , it's always the planning and the visions at the start of any garden, I drew a plan for my garden once I saw where the best light was from early morning, throughout the day, 12 years next month and a few tweaks along the way it's working well Willow trees and beech ferns and wild flowers with Acers and herbs all growing side by side a small woodland haven for the garden birds. A few places to sit and just "Be" as one with all the sounds colours all year round something different to look at or into..I maintain it myself I was 61 the year I drew my plan, still love being in my woodland gardens. I'm sure your Homestead will bring you so much work and pleasure, " Slow and Steady wins the race" 👍🌞💐

Hi Sean. Just watching this as I'm eating breakfast this morning and wanted to share a suggestion with you. I would move all your pots of roses, fruit and trees etc into the spot that you want them in the garden and leave them there for a few days. This way it gives you a better idea of how things will look, what spacing you will need and so on. Then if you decide to change things around, you can do it quickly and easily before actually planting things out. Also, is there any way you can get hold of some cardboard to lay down to kill off weeds, grass etc. I did this with my veggie garden 3 years ago, so much easier. It also gives you an idea of bed layout etc. I think someone else mentioned putting down membrane for the same thing. Here in Canada membrane is expensive so I opted for the cardboard and it has worked very well for me. Has really encouraged the worms too! Anyway, thought I would share that suggestion with you. Good luck with the homestead!

my advice is to plant as much perennial veg and fruit plants as you can. As we get older, preparing beds, seeding etc gets more difficult. But a good quality heavy duty woven landscape fabric to prevent weeds. The woven landscape fabric is cut by using a butane torch - that seals all the ravelly stuff.

As someone who is also plagued with loss of “spoons” every day I can sympathize. One little thing happens and suddenly you’re not good for the rest of the day or even the next. In brighter news - my purple sweet potato slips actually survived! I put them in the one tub (half a water barrel) and they got watered like mad due to rain. The squirrels appear to have gotten last years set of sunchokes so I replanted with red onions. I also have bothered white onion and turnip seedlings again. (Much more thinned this time.) The hardy peach tree finally leafed a little. It’s going to take time to catch up with the Anjou and red pear trees as those are significantly leafed out now. I have to gather my “spoons” because the yard is quite overgrown in areas and I have to address Creeping Jenny and Dollar Weed before it takes over any more. I am avoiding using chemicals because I have a mature raspberry plant among other things. I wonder if aerating and seeding clover would help.

As a chronic pain patient, I was shocked that I had to explain the concept of 'spoons' to my psychiatrist, a young woman who knows little of pain. It is so frustrating to have to 'educate' specialists who have put in years of training in issues relating to our bodies and how we cope on a daily basis. It is medical neglect.

One time, years ago I put in some seeds at my plot. The pods explode and the seeds go all over the place. According to information, supposedly the seeds need sunlight to germinate. I put four inches of compost over them. Didn't they sprout anyway? Hundreds of them. Much pulling ensued the following year. Fortunately they didn't form a permanent seed bank. The bees really enjoyed the flowers.

One thought about possibly moving the entrance: do you need to consider what can be seen from the road? Bit late now but this might be helpful for you/others for future reference. Plantain, a very common weed is great for stings. I'd seen other people say that and wouldnt have believed it worked so well had I not ben stung by a wasp last year when I first got my allotment. I'd just cleared all the weeds so I had to dash over to my neighbours plot to grab some! Chewed it up a little bit (rubbing it in your hands would work fine too if you dont fancy that) and then got my husband to press it on. He said the bump went down instantly, and the weird feeling of panic that I had (from the toxin) went away instantly as well. It felt like a miracle! I now grow it purposefully in my garden as a medicinal.

Your 'new' homestead is so much better and the river is an added bonus. Hope you're feeling better today and that you enjoyed a long rest. ME can be a bummer too. Love hearing about your plans for The Homestead, but I worry you're taking on too much. Your health must come first. I'm sure the allotment community would be willing to help you get established. Do they ever get together to talk about each others' projects? Alternatively, perhaps the other folk in the community might lend a hand? Or, you could get someone to rotovate the land to give you a head start. Its a lot for one person to do, so don't be afraid to ask for help. You've already been helping your community so its payback time now 😉. I expect some folk would be willing to lend a hand in their own time if they knew your situation re getting your allotment up and running. It can be a reciprocal arrangement: you help each other when need be. I love your zest for life Sean. It helps me savour and value mine more. Best of luck.

Hi Sean, put vinegar on a bee sting will neutralise it and take the stingy pain down. I've been stung by a bee in the past and it does work. Just dab some on. I would buy an antihistamine to be on the safe side but up to you. Shame u can't get some help with moving the glass. Definitely get some perspex soon if only to make your shed more secure. Hope you're okay. Take care, until next time.

Well Sean, you keep powering on even if it's after a nap! Darn bee! As far as the windows, I'd order new panes of glass and forget the ones at the allotment. While the allotment does have stunning views, when you showed the homestead later in the day, it just felt more peaceful, more like home. It's looking good with the old chicken house down. It will take time but, your plan sounds good. So much space to design, I'm sure it will go through changes and that's the fun of it!

Hi Sean. I think we all get a little overwhelmed at times. I had a lot of plans for this gardening season, but the weather and my knees have had other ideas! As you say…slow and steady…do a little, and do it often. The pollen has been so bad here in Virginia that I sometimes just go ahead and take a daytime antihistamine (Loratadine) before I head out to work in the garden…plus it’s defense against stings or mosquito bites. Goldenseal is also great for the sinuses. Take care and hope to see you back at the homestead soon!

Hi Sean...so sorry about the sting. Totally understand the crash of energy after that. I tried to explain that type of thing to a friend who is a nurse. She tried to tell me to think positive thoughts to reprogram my brain. Honestly if you aren't coping with it people just don't understand. Take it easy and soon you'll get a better day. Glad you have the homestead!...Sue from Arizona

I hope you feel better soon . Did you remove the bee sting. I think bees actually die if they sting you. I have fibromyalgia and my sleep pattern is horrendous . You would not cope with the heat we have here Cyprus. The homestead with the river. Marvellous 🎉 I love the area but can't cope with the weather

Oh my how that old plot looks. I don't think it would ever have been contained! Try not to get frustrated with yourself when the fatigue hits, it's just not something that we get to "pencil in" on a day that we dont have stuff to do. My family doesn't understand that I look normal but inside I can hardly make myself move and it will hit me at the strangest times. It sure makes life interesting 😅. Hope you feel better soon!

Good morning Sean. I am sorry the bee stung you, I have had the same only it happened in Manhattan while walking along the front of a hotel, scared the heck out of me. I’m glad you are thinking to put the fruit trees away from the shed, because the bees will also gather come spring then fall with blooms and fruit. I had quite a few getting drunk on fruit in the fall. So I’d prefer if you did not get bitten again. The homestead look s wonderful with the clear up you have done. I wish I could help with the work because you could use a bit of a hand getting it ready, but a flight across the pond is not in the cards yet. I’m glad you took a rest, we need to live with a flexible mind set because our body has a mind of its own. One small upset and I’m on the couch like a lady of old fanning myself and needing smelling salts to awaken 😂 never mind an injury however small. That could sideline me for days. Please be careful and pace yourself. Perhaps someone else in the old allotment could find the glass? I’m just glad you are in the homestead, that uphill venture and heat would have been very difficult to manage.

Just a thought, could you ask the shed company to send you replacement glass for the shed, ask if they could send for free, for a 'shout out' by you, off their company on your video, may generate them more business, nothing ventured etc...

Oh Sean. I’m so sorry that you weren’t able to accomplish what you wanted to but us auto-immune disease sufferers have to just go with what our bodies tell us to do. I do worry that although you have years of experience and fantastic plans, that you’re taking on too much work for one person. There seem to be groups in your area that are either focused on gardening or community service. Can you get someone to give you a hand for the hard work like clearing the land? Also when is your next live stream or are they just for people who have joined your channel? And hay fever is absolutely miserable this year. Barely want to go outside and the weather is beautiful! 😩
