Had to do the same thing with my 1973 Chrysler 70hp couple weeks ago. My harmonic balancer was about to call it quits, grabbed my torch and warmed the flywheel and one crack with a metal hammer and that sucker flew off.

Glad it helped lol. I'll probably be getting this one back together this weekend. Might not be the best motors out there but at least they're pretty easy to work on. Good luck with yours.

They aren't bad motors to own. They're very simple, and easy to work on. They just need routine maintenance like anything else.

agreed. i have a 1999 75hp force. tons of torque, and it almost sounds like a turbine or 4 stroke the faster it goes. you need to be a major idiot to kill it, but , alas new boaters bought them

We had the same identical engine as that one during the 90s and 2000s. Ran very strong for many years and alot of memories were made during that era going lake to lake with it for years with family. And then the problems started happening around 2008, alot of carburetor issues, and around 2013 the new issues relating to an electrical issue were just not repairable anymore and it was replaced. But that could of resulted from several different factors. Given also these are from 1988, but if one is still in good repair it more than likely has some good life left with a little TLC. Never hated that engine it was great for what it was but they had the worst reputation which we didn’t know until the issues began but overall it was fine the majority of its life when we owned that boat. Good luck with this one I will stay tuned

Hey hoss, did you ever find a engine rebuild kit anywhere for these Chrysler 85hp engines? I am personally a little green to the cannel, but you helped me tremendously already in the disassembly "thanks btw". I had recently bought an 1980 85 with a 90hp cap. I had heard the engine run before paying for the boat a year and a half ago. In-between years sitting up it has seemed to have stuck the rings an its dropped compression on all 3 cylinders {Top: 75psi, Middle: 25psi, Bottom: 55psi}. I have yet to attempt to unstick the piston rings with any penetrating oils just yet, however if all else failed..... I felt as though you may hold the key answer as to if the parts needed for this rebuild are still out there an available; or if the essentials replacement parts have been permanently discontinued at which point everyone owns an anchor more so than an engine. I don't mind if you rip the band aid off quickly, it already hurts to know it needs a rebuild, but any info on parts for this model engine would be superior even if it's my new boat anchor. I personally just cannot find a site that has the complete rebuild kit; or even a re-ring kit listed. Thank you for the time an research you put into understanding what you know about these ancient engines. Iv lost too many old heads in my years around my area to teach me how to work on a simple design that seems long forgotten now. We all appreciate what you do on here just keep on keeping on Hommy. 👍👍

Best thing you could do at this point in my opinion is tear your engine down, clean up the pistons and rings, and put it back together. If it truly just has stuck rings, now is the time to get it apart and clean it before any damage happens. The Franz marine website is a good source for parts, otherwise I scrounge on ebay and here in the midwest these motors are pretty plentiful still so I watch for used ones to come up for sale. Right now I do see a complete rebuild kit on amazon by TSM performance for around $700. Not worth it in my opinion. I would get your motor apart if you havent already and see what you truly need for parts. These things arent very complex and dont care too much about tolerance on internal parts. From what you said it sounds like you'll just need a gasket set and maybe 3 sets of rings. Should be very doable. I'll try to link some parts here in a few minutes.

Have you checked compression on all 3 cylinders? These things are notorious for having stuck rings and low compression.

It's still torn apart in the shop. It's taken me awhile to find parts as well as decide whether to have the block bored or just reassemble with a good hone. I'll definitely have another video coming but it may be another month or two unfortunately.

i did this whole operation last winter was pretty simple but i now have carb problems and compression is only 110 went from 90 before rebuild to 110 after. i bought a fresher power head and another parts motor so now i have two. ones a back up smh they are cheap but they should be fine if taken care of and having spare parts with these is nice

To be honest I'm not even sure if I'm going to put this one back together. I'm sure I'll get around to it, but I have a 60hp 4 stroke yamaha sitting in the shop that I think I'm going to put on instead. Just not sure how the boats going to like going from 85hp to 60hp. I think it would be fine, but I'd prefer it was at least a 70hp.

@@o4rudeboy 25-28 on glass flat water is what I'd expect with 2 average sized people in the boat, which is perfectly fine with me. For what I plan to do with it I'd rather have the reliability over top speed. I'm toying with the idea of buying a boring machine to rebuild the old motor. Wouldnt mind doing that kind of work in my spare time so I'd think itd be worth the expense, but we'll see what happens.

I think it all depends on what your personal situation is. For people with no tools and zero know how, I'd agree. Probably not worth the headache. But I'm interested in the process, enjoy learning different things and already own most of the tools needed to do the work, so I still plan to rebuild it this winter.
