Yeah, it is definitely past his or her time to retire! They obviously can't see the music to read it, for that organist is striking many wrong keys and pedals, and if they play by ear, they can't even hear much of what they are playing anyway! I could say, though, that at least they are trying to play something on the organ (rather than forgetting about it and playing the piano, as happens often at my church)!

There are concert organists who are well into their 80s who can knock the living daylights out of any instrument. One does however need to know when it's time to quit or if they are going in way over their heads. Pay is also an issue particularly since grad school and a doctorate don't come cheap. Musicians who can deliver the goods have been known to politely decline because of insufficient monetary compensation.
