I was taught back in the film days that the 135mm was the portrait lens

That is a little odd, full frame and 35mm are the same size. The canon is an older lens, but it is still sharp on the R5. It does loose contrast when shooting into a light source, a pop of flash fixes that. The 135 works well with small kids. Mom or dad can be closer than the camera and not be in the frames.

I also prefer 135 mm focal length..... Due to its super compressed look..... but some people prefer 85 mm because it gives some information about the surroundings.....in case of 135mm everything is compressed and blurred out and you do not have to worry about the surroundings 😅

Actually, it depends on what you want. If you do not have distance limitations, object is not moving, 135mm is the choice.

2:28 the closer the f number of the aperture gets to 1 (while not going less than 1) the wider the aperture is; so you don't go DOWN to 1.2 but rather UP to 1.2. When you stop DOWN a lens, you would go to a larger number, such as: f/16 or f/22. The aperture of a lens is expressed as a fraction of the FOCAL LENGTH. If I were to adjust the aperture of a 50mm lens DOWN, that would indicate that the aperture would be made to have a shorter diameter. So if it were adjusted all the way DOWN, it might have a diameter of about 3 millimeters if the SMALLEST f-stop was f/16, for instance.

It is always simple in pairs, if you have 35mm take 85mm and if you have 50mm take 135mm.

Well, this is the first sane advice I came across! I prefer 35 to 50, so probably should get me the 85... Thanks!

For half-length and head & shoulder portraits, I prefer to use an 85mm telephoto lens on a full-frame camera body. For tight face shots, I prefer to use a 135mm. I rarely use the 85 or the 135 for full-length, 3/4 length, or environmental portraits. I own and use the following: 85mm f/1.8 85mm f/1.4 135mm f/3.5 135mm f/2 80-200mm f/2.8 All are excellent portrait lenses. I usually use my 85mm in a 35/85/180mm kit. I usually use my 135mm in a 24/50/135mm kit.

If I knew what I know now I would have bought the 135mm when I first started out for portrait photography

Just stumbled on this channel, in my test shot the new Nikon 135mm Plena for the Z system is the best 135mm out there as it renders differently, kind of has a magical cinematic looks in the images

It looks like you prefer the 85mm over the 135mm and 50mm. Thanks for sharing

The 135 is not a lower tier the 135 is much sharper in many ways and the color science out of the 135 is significantly better on the 135 shooting at 1.2 it’s for natural life photographers

People who are looking at these options, hopefully know what focal length is? 🤔

I think the subject in the pictures should be the same size in order to appreciate the difference

I love my Sigma 105 f1.4!!! 🫶❤️

I’m so torn between the sigma art 85, 105, 135. I shoot a lot of outdoor weddings and engagements so 135 makes sense! I already have 35, 50, 24-70, 70-200 (the 70-200 too heavy to hold so the 135 is lighter)
@ldmndz4652 Жыл бұрын
Yup..a 105!..as they say is a good "in-between"..compromise..me I use an 85mm for a lot of things even "street photography"..never used a 135mm before..the 105 makes sense because if your in a space where you can't move a 135 can get you in a pinch..where as an 85 or 105 you still have a lot more "room" to work with..haha when it comes down to it..its what "look" and concept/story you want to show...these lenses..the main importance is all about that "compression"..for sure!..and what you want to capture with it...

@@MariahPhotographs Look into the 135mm Samyang. It's cheap and competes head to head with the 135mm GM.
