87) Mono-Red Vs. Tax-Edge. Old school mtg. 93/94.

A best of 3 set at the kitchen table of my mate Kåre.
These matches are between Morten on his Mono-Red and Henrik on his Red-White tax-edge.
They are playing with Swedish B/R rules with the danish reprint policy which are: abu, AN, antiquities, legends, the dark, revised, chronicles, 4th ed. And all “foreign” cards from those editions allowed as well. Some groups here (including this one) allow IE and CE as well.

Quick note and spoiler warning! Spoiler Spoiler Spoiler Warning. As Jan H. Has correctly pointed out I made a complete blunder in game no.3. Mono-red actually survives the lightning bolt and wins that match being at one point of life.

Land Tax and Land's Edge was a theoretical deck idea that floated around because both cards were Legends rares. Once 1995 hit, it became a real deck in Type 2 called RW Control. This was due to the reprintings of both in white border in 4th Edition and Chronicles. But the best use of Land Tax in constructed was with GW where you ran LT with Zuran Orb.

Makes sense -thanks for the historical breakdown. I don’t remember seeing tax-edge in my parts either before type 2. And it makes sense to use it with zuran orb as well.

Great games. In game 3 though, Mono red could have pyrotechnics the Granite Gargoyle for 3 and then attacked with shivan and pumped it to kill him...

How did Tax-Edge win here? Mono red had still 4 points of life when he was bolted?

Jan H. In the final game? Mono-red gets a chain lightning to the dice going to 5. Mono-red bounces that chain lightning back on tax-edge’s granite gargoyle. Tax-edge bounces that chain lightning back a 2nd time bringing mono-red down to 2 life. Tax-edge then follows it up with a lightning bolt- thus sealing the game. :)

Lol God dang it. I just rewatched it and you are perfectly correct. It’s 2-2 then- mono-red must have survived on 1 point of life in game 3. I’ll make a message about it.

Yeah some tweaking might be called for. He also seemed to lack the swords, which is a bit of a problem against creatures with toughness 4 and above.
