To add to my description of this car about P.O Tommy Rutolo, my car was featured in a featurette produced by the retired P.O that drove this car when it was in service. Always remember P.O Tommy Rutolo who was senselessly gunned down by a violent parolee. 1984 Valentines day kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4Othn2ApJaWa8k

I do apologize for my delayed response, but You are quite welcome. At car shows the age range of people who come to me are quite wide. Retired officers just loved these cars, as far as the reliability of these M bodies, and the stories they share with me, and the miles of smiles it brings to kids faces. You can't put a price on these kinds of things. Funny, my wife has to remind me to stop talking at car shows, the parking lot lights have long turned off, and its just me and the other car owner. I really do hope I have made Officer Rutolo and his family proud

I really have to take my hat off for this car and Chrysler Motor Company. I reluctantly drove this car on I-80 for one hour and 15 mins in 97 degree heat, mainly uphill then 15 miles in local traffic with the factory A/C on high the whole trip. No issues. The soft velour bench seats are so comfortable and the car is rock solid with no rattles. Shame though. Shame more M bodies weren't preserved for the next set of caretakers.

I picked up in 87 Gran Fury that was under a tarp in the outside shed and partly under a tree in South Texas few months back. Just surface rust that you could knock off with a brass brush. Needs new tires, new carburetor and to clean up the wiring on the inside. My dad had a 85 diplomat stroked out 360 in it. Never got to fix up the Diplomat the way that he wanted to but we still got the engine which I'm going to drop here in this Gran Fury. About 22,000 miles are on it, it ain't never been driven. Some of the things that are tell tale signs of low use would be the turn signals stock. On Old Chrysler's, from the 1980s if you touched the plastic which was the metallic-looking silver flake it would wear off after a certain period of time on my particular car, it is still on there crystal clear from the factory and it is not rubbed off. The radio does not have any wear marks on it and the glass for the gauges is still crystal clear. The clock color and lights are very bright. Original light bulbs in the trunk, tail light and also the glove compartment. Original dome light, though the headliner Has Fallen. The interior is the same as yours And the seats are very comfortable I will add. It's an AC car, like yours but like he says he does not work and I have to fix the vents. The wipers need to be fixed and the switch inside the steering column has gone out. I picked it up for six hundred bucks and got it home and with plates and insurance and now it's sits and waits for me to get it running again. The time that I did have it running, it was a blast from the past and made me remember how comfortable they are. The Torsion bars in the leaf springs make it float over any bump and undulation on the road and it is a very comfortable ride. The a.m. radio comes in super clear. I can't wait to get it running and take it to Mopar shows. It'll be a looker, it's part Survivor part not. It definitely has its paint fade from the Sun And a pretty good guy Legend one of the body panels and a good-sized dent. Other than that it is a splendid car and I have a few videos of it on my channel here that I will try to upload more with it I'm glad to see another person out there who enjoys the M bodies. there aren't very many of us out there, we're even more rare than the Hemi guys LOL, but M bodies are special. They look good And when you start doing the right things to the 360, or even a 318, they get to be a pretty fun little Streetcar. The kind of car of that your police car there when chase after mine, But as it is now, you'd probably pull me over thinking somebody was stealing it.

@@pkranz937 thank you for the information about the suspension. With some new tires(215x65x15) it has a much better ride but can still be improved and i need to do that, with some better absorbers and new compontents. Some of the grease boots or sleeves are old and cracked and don't hold any grease. These things i will probably do at the same time for the front and rear. On the rear end, i am going to go with a big Dana 60 and Detroit Locker. I have a stroked out 360(to 410 with ported J heads and intake and a good Comp Cam in it) and this is necessary because 500ft lb torque will shred the 7 and 3/4 gear. At this time, i am having issues with my air fuel mix and timing. I have a cheap distrubitor on it(it was going to get towed and i needed to get it moving) and that distrobuitor isn't vacuum and it needs to be. I will get the Mopar one. The car never had a lean burn and it never had the SCC(Spark Control computer). It originally had the volt meter which melted out and i replaced that along with the entire ignition and had to fix fuseable links. Currently i have a 2280 Holley and a Mopar Ignition(orange box and MSD Blaster, MSD plug wires) Fires up like a charm. Because of the vacuum advnce and the air fuel mix, it tends to stall while i accelerate hard(which when i out the hammer down it is more akin to being on a strip than just driving) Haynes says that it is most likely these two reasons and i agree, as all the other symptoms have been eliminated by means of replacement. These two are my last bits. I do want to take off the intake and make sure there is no major hold ups(a small blockage may not be an issue at 700 or 1000rpm at 10 or 15mph on idle circuit and become issue at 3200 or higher). My power steering pulley and the bolt that goes into the engine block is stripped. I made a mistake while putting on a new belt and forgot to put the bracket on(as i have removed the useless air pump to exhaust) and it leaked coolant for a while. I stopped that but bolt still stripped and also belt is loose. This problem can be fixed in a day by raking timing chain cover off and tapping the thread, reinstall and then use a good bolt with loctite. Aside from these repairs, it is in good shape and these are basic maintenance and not major. The real work comes eventually with the engine and rear end swap, putting in a built up 904 with ratchet shift and dual 3 inch pipes ending before the rear tires(3 inch is too big to fit over the axel and with the beffier Dana 60, too tight)

Good morning. This is Ted from Texas are you definitely love the looks of the Plymouth Grand furious. I love old police cars and in my life I've owned quite a few different makes and models. My very first one was a 1987 Dodge Diplomat. I purchased it from a car dealer upstate New York. This car was so super clean and was never a petroleum vehicle. It was metallic powder blue with the Lord interior . Supposedly it came from the State Police Academy. A bunch of Plymouth and Furious and Ford Crown Victoria is and Chevy Caprice. I just enjoy the vehicles . Thank you man

Your car is in outstanding condition for its age, especially the dashboard! Most 80's vintage cars have cracked dashes with warpage and/or shrinkage from years of exposure to the sun. The 318 ci Mopar engine and Torqueflight transmission are indeed an indestructible combination. I learned to drive with a 1976 Dodge Coronet that had a 318 2 barrel and 727 Torqueflight auto tranny. The Coronet had a very comfortable, plush interior just like your Gran Fury. Sadly, the Minnesota tinworm destroyed the Coronet's body long before the 318 and 727 Torqueflight gave up the ghost. Thanks for sharing!

I really appreciate the kind words! It was a pretty difficult find also. Between my wife and I, we did find a couple of these, but with very high mileage and the body condition just wasn't up to my standards. In other words, I didn't want a project. I needed turn-key. Sorry to hear about the old girl Coronet. But I hope it gave you many years of happy memories. That what these cars are about, aye? I've added a few more cars to my stable in the past few. Years. I'll be sharing them too. Have a great day bro.

The 318 was probably the best Mopar engine they ever made. Even though it's no hemi if you have a four barrel carb on it the car will move out really well. The thing about the 318 is that these engines last a very long time if you change the oil in them like you should. It is by far my favorite Mopar powerplant when it comes to reliability. I put 230K on a 1970 Fury and was still running like a top when I sold it. I wish to this day I would have never sold it. It had regular points and coil ignition and if you kept the timing right and made the proper adjustments the car would get 24-26 mpg back then on the highway and around 18 in town which was in my book very good for back in the day especially with a four barrel that I constantly kept my foot into.

I used two of these cars from the mid 1980's through about 1989 when I worked for the State of Florida. The first one was an 85 Dodge Diplomat, after which I was issued an 86 Gran Fury. Both models were pretty much identical. The Diplomat was fully marked with a JetSonic lightbar and the smaller JetSonic bars looked great on this model. The Gran Fury replacement was a light brown, unmarked unit with a Fireball II on the front dash with the optional mirror attachment with two more Fireball II's facing the rear, mounted upside down at the top of the rear window (also with mirrors). Those two rear facing dash lights with mirrors produced as much light output as it would if there were a full light bar on the roof. The unmarked Gran Fury was my all-time favorite patrol car, and both mopar's were equipped with 360 V8's and had plenty of power. Both models came equipped with small stainless steel center-mounted hubcaps with Goodyear Eagle GT tires. Given the limited emergency lighting options of the period, I remember initially having some concern about not being seen, as this was my first the first "unmarked" vehicle I was issued and was before we had all the fancy hideaway lighting doo-dads LEO's are afforded nowadays, but the lights they installed were extremely reliable and worked fantastic. They did get extremely HOT but I never experienced any failures. Every vehicle after that were all Crown Victoria's, and while they were also great cars, I always preferred my old Diplomat and Gran Fury because they were a bit smaller but had big V8's, handled very well, and I always felt they just had a "look" about them that meant business.

Tom Matthews fantastic post Tom. Thank you. I always enjoy hearing stories from vets who drove these things for active police use. You are right. The M body Mopars are tough as hell. Used extensively for NYPD use and NYC taxi fleets, enduring some of the most horrific roads in the country. They held up remarkably. That said, it’s a wonder not more of them are still on the road. Also like I’d mentioned in the video, jeepers. When a Gran Fury, or Diplomat, pulled up behind me with those light bars a whirling, wig wags going full speed, man. You knew full well you were done for. Just a quick experience I had the first night I took delivery of the Fury, my wife who you see in the video, went out to eat, we took it the the local pizza shop. There was street parking. We ordered and sat down and a jet black police explorer pulls up behind me. shines his headlights on the Fury’s trunk. Panicking? Right? Huge officer gets out, comes into the pizza shop where my wife and I are eating, and asked if that was my Fury. I smile and said yes. Turns out, he remembers those old Furys and Diplomats well and how much he really admired them. What a day that was.

Is that a 2 or 4bbl car? Police patrollers got the 2bbl. Police pursuits got the 4bbl. From my knowledge of Il. cars, M bodies that were rated for police and taxi service had factory HD suspension, more welds to stiffen the structure, the big 11x 2.5 inch rear brakes, HD electrical system, relocated ECMs, 9 1/4 rear ends, and auxiliary oil pressure and volt meters located on the lower left side of the dash, where the factory blank gauge pod was. ( I still have a set that I found on a car in the junkyard) Pursuit cars had the aux trans cooler, p/s cooler, and 7 blade fan. Around here, both models got the 120 certified speedo. Interesting that your car has the plush cloth interior. The 1s we had were the vinyl buckets in tan and most of them had a different center console which housed the aux light, CB and siren controls, crudely made of metal, that bolted to the floor. Our cars also had the aux map light just ahead of the rear view mirror mounted on the roof. The biggest problem we saw with these cars was frt suspension sag due to poorly made K members. I replaced several in the late 80s and 90s, on 85-87 cars. Yours appears to be standing straight. Our cars were shipped either in white or red ( for fire chiefs and detectives ) and it cost our city extra for different colors if they wanted it factory painted. Kudos to you for saving a car that would normally have been driven into the ground!

Too bad you couldn’t procure a scientific prototype Mark VII siren , which was used in the 70’s and 80’s by the NYPD ! Would have made the car that much more authentic

Yes they definitely sound more authentic and they were used extensively through the 70s and 80s. I'm not really sure why this Fury is equipped with this style. I bought it from the Ret detective this way. Thanks for watching. I appreciate it!

Looks great! I’ve been looking for an old school M body car like these preferably black. I’ve seen the diplomats and the Chrysler’s but not as good as this, is this for sale ?

Good day! first off, thanks for watching. I've searched all over the web, and the "M" bodies are definitely available and what's good for people like us, they don't command a lot of money making them very accessible. As for black, I haven't seen those yet. This one isn't for sale though, I'm pretty deep into it so far. I plan for a fresh coat of paint and have that cancer cut out at some point. In the meantime,, have a great day!

Do you know were to find those cop style hub caps? I have 86. Theres usually expensive too if i come across them.

I actually haven't had the opportunity to look for them, but I don't think they should be too hard to find. They are called dog dish style hub caps. They were used pretty much on all the M body MOPARS, Plymouth Furys and Dodge Diplomats. I have had a lot of good luck finding odd ball parts for my 85 Chrysler 5th Avenue. A great source would be Ebay. Unfortunately, you are right. There not cheap. Which is confusing to me. I can't imagine they are in such great demand. Good luck though. Do you have pictures of your 86?

@@styldsteel1 ya my grille was broke .i went with the dodge grille instead of the one that says plymouth. It was 70$ vs 200$. And i got a few pics but there not the best and now i have it under a tarp. Its pretty mint but has its flaws. The paints pretty good. Its faded but no actual sun spots. Interiors pretty mint besides a falling headliner and under the dash has a small crack. 98000 miles. Im the second owner.

Bob Dylan it sounds actually kind of nice. 10-4 on that falling headliner. Then it is without a doubt in my mind that is a common flaw with the M bodies then. It’s not shown in this video, which is just an over site, the headliner is sagging over the rear right seat though not badly. My 85 5th Avenue has the same thing. Sagging headliner. I had to have that one partially redone. That car is gorgeous and I chose not to leave it this way although it did set me back quite a bit.

Mine says "CERTIFIED" above the trip portion of the odometer near the bottom. Yours seems not to. It should have come with the vented wheels too. This very well may not have been an AHB car.

Hello and thanks for sharing! During one of my many conversations I had with the retired detective he mentioned during one of those conversations that this particular Fury never saw pursuit. Once he showed up, the beat cops then showed up and he was gone. And my thinking? With the previous owner Ret. NYPD, Detective, Joe Johnson having a Motorola, no criminal had ever beaten a Motorola. Right? Thanks for watching!

To be honest unless you have the title for the car I don’t think this was an NyPD car. Even an unmarked NYPD car. I don’t think they used the salon level. The interior is definitely not NYPD . Plus they didn’t put spot lights on patrol/ detective unmarked cars. Maybe on the Highway unmarked but still unlikely. Unless you added that. Like I said the interior )seats are definitely not NYPD Spec seats

What I was able to find out is the detective I bought this car from said he acquired it from the PD like this. But in the grand scheme of things is hey, it's a very good looking car, fun as all get out to drive, I'm never going to sell it, but if I were for some quick cash I'd just tell the potential buyer exactly what the detective told me at the time of sale. That said i really do appreciate your input!

Hope your day is going good. I do believe this car was ordered to be a detectives car so it is devoid of the police car goodies. Once the beat cops showed up, he was gone. Anyhow this Fury has a standard 318 Ci with the Torque flite 3 speed auto. Thanks for watching!
