To be fair, I'm from the same part of the south as Richard, and we suck at putting on the accent unless we're talking to another southerner who has the accent. I think it's because we're brought up thinking that our accent makes us sound stupid, so we make ourselves not have it. Doesn't mean we can't do it, it just means we can't force it out unless we're around people who talk with the southern accent...
