I appreciate non dubbed documentaries. I'm used to subtitles and it allows me to listen to the sounds of other languages. Plus it's super useful for the hearing impaired. In my country we don't dub at all. It might be a matter of national preference, but maybe that's why learning new languages is easy enough for us.

Well, you have to sit this one out then, if your family members were in this over 1000 years ago. Amazing you are actually able to know which member fought after more than 1000 years. How were you able to find that one out. Wow.

According to one of the sagas the Vikings entered the Mediterranean Sea with view to sack Rome but mistook a smaller city to the north called Luna for Rome and then ,by means of a deception, managed to take that city when the Viking chief pretended to convert to Christianity. The Norman descendants of the Vikings actually sacked Rome a few hundred years later and took pope captive and they established a powerful kingdom in Sicily and southern Italy -quite a number of the southern Italian aristocracy including the former queen Paola of Belgium claim descent from these Normans -she's from the family of Ruffo meaning "Red" and the word is related to "William Rufus" who was the second Norman king of England.

I agree that a more accurate title would be "How and Why the Vikings Became Christians." I didn't find out how they invaded Paris or what their last journey was. The Christianization of the Vikings was the most interesting part of this. I hadn't considered pragmatic reasons, that some countries and kings would forbid trade with pagans, so the Vikings would learn the lingo and make some jewelry and voila! In another documentary, Viking Chieftain Ragnar Lodbrok is mentioned as successfully invading Paris in either the late 800's or early 900's. He is not mentioned here, unless Rollo and Ragnar were the same person. But then, this documentary is not about how the Vikings invaded Paris. Thank you for not dubbing, and for having music that is only semi-intrusive.

The Vikings never went away. After the pillaging of Europe. During the last 600 years, the plundering of the Americas, Africa, India, China shows the Viking era never ending.

Can we get some sources on this lady saying that women weren't oppressed under vikings? Like literally there's nothing to indicate or anyway for her to know that... since they had no writing or historical documents to know how women were treated

King Olaf of Sweden killed lots people because they wouldn't convert to Christianity, he got away with it. He then caused a viking war because he hit his wife. Pretty conclusive.

There's literally numerous pieces of documentation of the gender roles and rights women did/did not have and the clan politics/policies/laws. You do know people can read their runes, right? Many other cultures interacted with the vikings and wrote their own reports of what they witnessed. 2 minutes on Google would've given you multiple pieces of Information and where they learned it from.

People only do things because they can. From the beginning of Recorded Time. in Mesopotamia, Two Brothers split & made War over the Fathers Kingdom, they weakened each other and when they were at their Weakest, the Sea People showed up and not only Toppled them but all their Neighbors. The Romans in Britannia(& Europe) The Vikings. The Europeans in the New World. The Sea People always showed up when they were at their weakest.

Excellent presentation! I especially like the idea and depiction of the Christianization process. Too often its told in a 1 sided context or the other, when it was multiple reasons and contexts being played out simultaneously. Rises and falls of popularity ending in the eventual Catholicism. Love it, thanks

It's very hard for someone in my state to be reading subtitles. I love the channel and information but if you can go through the trouble of writing subtitles I would hope you could have someone translate. Unfortunately half way through the video I had to turn it off, my mental situation detracts from me reading and paying attention to subtitles which is a shame because this documentary really caught my interest from the start. Otherwise great channel. That's just how subtitles affect me. Thank you.
