The great thing about this that Joycon Switch support was added, and since Nintendo released those NES joycons, you can have official OEM wireless NES controllers that play on an actual NES. And it's awesome.

[Try4ce] Thanks to everyone who pointed out that the 8Bitdo controllers work naively with the Retron 5. Very cool, I actually totally missed that. While this video is more specifically about the Retro Receiver and not the controllers, this is very cool to know, and I'm looking forward to trying it out!

You can use 4 controllers at once just with 1 retro receiver.
@tetsujin_144
@tetsujin_144 8 жыл бұрын
How would that work? The NES Four Score uses both controller ports, so each port only provides data from two controllers. You could do it with one adapter in each port, maybe...
@jaythemonsterhunter2705
@jaythemonsterhunter2705 8 жыл бұрын
You just have to sync the controllers to it.
@tetsujin_144
@tetsujin_144 8 жыл бұрын
Beastmachine99 Not the point: The way the NES is designed, you can't send controller data for player 2 over controller port 1. So even if the adapter is paired with four controllers, if it only plugs into one controller port, it can only send (at most) two players of controller data to the system. (Players 1 and 3). To send controller data for players 2 and 4 to the system, you need to connect to controller port 2.

I am super happy with my 8bitdo SNES controller. Damn, it's perfect. I mean, it almost looks as if Nintendo made it, or they used real factory parts exactly the same as the original SNES controllers. The feel of the controller is EXACTLY like the original SNES. Really... I've never known a company to be so awesome as this one. Aside from the perfect functionality, the packaging it came with was super nice... and a keychain. I just have to highly recommend this to everyone.

Great video. I love the part about you destroying the USB connection. I have the Nes 30 pro and I love it so far. I use it to play games on my Nexus 6p. I love that I can play PS 1 games using analog sticks. My nostalgia console is the PS1 that I got in my late 20's. I grew up with Atari 2600 but the games weren't all that great or memorable. I skipped the whole Nintendo and Sega generation as well. I began with Resident evil, metal gear solid, syphon filter and Medal of Honor. Also Twisted metal and Driver. I would like to get the SNES and basic Nes models as well because they look cool. I love the size of them as well. most Bluetooth controllers were the size of an Xbox controller. this fits in my pocket. (Update: Managed to get a NES Classic and then ordered a Nes30 with receiver. )

MINOR CORRECTION FOR YOU, the Retron 5 will absolutely NATIVELY pair with/read 8BITDO's controllers with the Retron 5 "extend" firmware installed in the controller and holding a button combo during startup (Power+Y). You won't need the NES receiver dongle at all (that's what is causing your Retron 5 to give you that error message, it thinks the NES port doesn't have enough buttons to use with SNES software). You MAY have to go into the controller setup in Retron 5 and re-map the buttons WITHIN the Retron 5's software .... took me a good 10 minutes and a game like StarFox that has a good "button diagram" screen built into the game, but the Retron will SAVE that configuration. 8BITDO's controllers (I believe all models) will natively work as an alternate controller for the Retron 5 for ALL consoles (SNES, Genesis, etc.) without the NES receiver. Just go to 8BITDO's website and download the Retron 5 firmware. www.8bitdo.com/nes30pro/Extend-firmware.html

Would've been cool if they mapped the buttons mirrored to the unused buttons on the Wii U Pro pad. So if A is A and B is B, if Y was also A and X was also B, that way you could have the buttons in whatever way you really wanted depending on your playstyle. Same deal with the DualShocks.

The Wii remote is probably the worse controller Nintendo ever made, when using as a traditional controller. It ranks up there with the OG Nintendo controller. So unergonomic and uncomfortable. It's good to see that it works with all types of other BT controllers. PS4 being my personal fav. I just ordered the SNES adapter to use with my 8bitdo SNES controller. Can't wait. Thanks for this review. Hearing that input lag is pretty much negligible, is great!

a Neo-Geo Retro receiver and clone of the NGCD controller would also be excellent. You can use the snes30 on the retron 5 if you do a firmware update on the controller, then just pair it up as a retron wireless controller in the menu of the retron 5 and bam, you have your wireless snes controller. As for using it on a real snes, I think if you found a plug converter it should work.They are essentially the same pin outs just in a different shape. I think a guy on youtube called satoshi matrix actually made this sort of converter using two extension cables and made an nes > snes adapter and a snes > nes. None of that is probably needed though since I'm pretty sure I have seen them somehow using those controllers on a snes wirelessly, so they probably are making an snes version also. Now if they would just make a wireless genesis controller...

Just received an adapter from a guy in the UK in a really nice 3D printed case for 25 €, that allows me to connect an 8bitDo Retro Receiver directly to the Gamecube. It offers several input modes and does not show any input lag at all. This way you can use basically any controller on your GC that connects to the Retro Receiver, which is super awesome. SN30, M30, SN30 Pro+ all work great with this setup and you are actually playing wireless on a Gamecube for under 100 dollars, even if you have to buy both adapters and a controller. Let me know if you are interested and I will share a link.

Cory please tell me - did you see ever segamegadrive form joypads which can be used with NES / AV famicom consoles? I know this is not 8-bit, but the formfactor is best for me to play on NES games - this sega joypad has all that needs - big close situated A and B buttons which makes more comfortable to push it with one finger, A goes first but not B button goes first like it is on NES (stupid decision, still dont understand who is the hell imagined that). and the d-pad has diagonals. nes controllers dont have diagonals on d-pad, so this is not so comfortable when we need to push it in games. but how is it possible to make such cusmom made controller? if the 8bitdo made segamegadrive 6 button controller possible to play on nes (adding there turbo modes and START /SET buttons as well) this would be awesome!! but for a shame its 2021 year and there is still no any chance to get this controllers for playing nes games

Honestly that sounds like a great solution over buying another Sony one. Reason my D-pad went out to begin with was because the PS2 controllers don't have a PCB, they use a Ribbon cable-like board and they were prone to dying like that. Looking into the Logitech one really seems like a great solution, thanks!

The retro5 has bluetooth. You don't need that receiver to get any of the 8bitdo controllers to work. My SFC30 works great connecting straight to it.

Sometimes I feel I'm the only fan of the downward angle for A and B... I mean, I would want to map A to Circle and B to X if I were to play on a Playstation controller you know? But well, if I were to choose a wireless controller to play NES with it would have to be the sideways Wiimote, it already has just the 2 buttons in the right place so...

I really wish they would just do a 1:1 NES controller, or at least one in the dogbone style.

I honestly kind of wish 8Bitdo made a 2 Button NES controller with no shoulder buttons. Just like the original controller. I'd also be happy with a wireless dogbone controller. Again with two buttons. I don't need more for NES.

Years later, but 8bitDo now has a kit so that you can modify an NES Classic or original NES controller: www.8bitdo.com/mod-kit-for-nes-classic-controller www.8bitdo.com/mod-kit-for-nes-controller

I didn't like the diamond-style face buttons on the 8bitdo controllers as I wanted the authentic/original 2 button layout, so I took apart a dead NES controller and spliced together parts from a dualshock 3 to create my own Bluetooth NES controller and paired that with the 8bitdo receiver. I feel this gives me the most authentic experience but with the added benefit of Bluetooth. I must say, however, it wasn't an easy project. You should be very comfortable with a soldering iron before attempting to solder to the tiny pads in the dualshock 3. Also the dualshock I used was a vx7 model which has a super-tiny mainboard. I don't know if it would work with earlier models without significant case work due to the larger mainboard in earlier DS3 versions. Also I had to mount the battery externally on the back, so the form-factor is not exactly the same as a stock NES controller, but the amount of added depth and weight is hardly noticeable especially when factoring in how heavy the original cord was. If anything the controller still feels lighter without the cord pulling down all the time (even with the added battery weight).

I didn't know about the ability to use it as a USB-Bluetooth dongle by reversing it. I watched this hoping I could use the USB port to use wired USB controllers on the NES.
