You have to be very careful when choosing to go with 24 gb of ram. My friend did so, and since he isn't into PCs too much, he just bought a single 8gb stick from a friend and dropped it into the pc. ( Now he had 24gb in total ) . MONTHS LATER i randomly visited him in his house, just to talk and play some videogames. We started talking about pc stuff and i mentioned that its really good he has 24gb instead of 16 , since he uses a lot of background aps whenever he plays with us, like discord, a few chrome tabs, some music, steam, and hr usually hosted the servers. So we randomly started browsing around in system manager, when i noticed that, even tho the system detected he had 24gb ram, not only did it say he had ONLY 8gb usable, even the usage was showing it ( 70%+ usage not even playing any game ) , but also it said that there's 16gb of ram for SYSTEM RESERVE. Aka ram you can't use, just ram the pc uses to run windows or something like that. And he was running ddr4 ram at 2144mhz .. I added 2+2 together, and with a hella confused look on my face, i asked him if all the ram sticks are equal. He said they are.. But HE ISN'T SURE. We open the pc up, guess what? Its a different stick. He had two 8gb 3000mhz ddr4 sticks ( 16gb total ), and one 8gb stick, the one he bought from our friend, 2144mhz ddr4. We take out thr single 8gb stick, and boot the pc back on. It boots faster, and immediately feels smoother even without anything open. WIERD ISN'T IT. We open system manager , only for us to see that he now has 16gb usable, with like 50mb of ram on reserve, with like 20-30% usage. The look on our faces was f*cking priceless. He opens discord, YT , chrome and opens Metro exodus. Where before his game would stutter and lag, his frames WENT UP and his game became insanely smooth. Ive never laughed harder in my life. Oh and did i mention the ram started running at 3000mhz ? Yeah so what happened was, his pc didn't support 3 sticks of ram, AND DEFINITELY NOT 1 THAT'S DIFFERENT FROM THE REST, and what it would do is, use the single slower stick as the usable ram, and use the faster 16gb as system reserve ram. And since a pc will always run at the speed of the slowest stick of ram, his entire PC's ram was running at 2144mhz , instead of 3000mhz . By TAKING OUT a ram stick, i doubled his available ram, increased his fps, SKYROCKETED his 1% lows, and increased the speed of the ram, making thr whole pc itself feel smoother. When i say be careful when going 24gb , i mean it.

I mean if he does not even know what he is putting in his computer then it not the fault of 24 vs 16gb 😂 2133 is like the most basic factory setting (no XMP) and will significantly bottleneck with a ryzen cpu for sure. 3000 I would say is the minimum you should look for on ddr4, pricewise the 3600 with cl16 makes a lot of sense also. Ram will clock to the lowest profile usually, but there are a few exceptions (if it is fairly similar ram you might be able to use the profile with better timings like 3600mt with cl16 instead of cl17). I don't understand why he only would have 8gb usable though. Maybe it was a windows setting? Or was he using completely different modules with different manufacturers? Personally I had 24gb for a pc at one point where it was 1x8 and 1x16, which is not ideal for latency, but better than 8gb for performance overall. Afterwards, I had an even stranger setup with 64 gb (2x8, 1x16, 1x32). Which can work well if size matters more than speed, but again low latency/overclocking you can kinda forget about. All of these sticks were 3000mt, cl16 and corsair. So compatibility was fine. I think nowadays the gap from 16gb to 24/32 is usually very small and difficult to notice. Let alone 32 vs 64 apart from edge cases.

I'm not a computer guy but it seems like its because the ram sticks are different, 2144mhz seems way worse than 3000mhz and incompatible. I'm also thinking about going for 24 gigs of ram but have an 8gb stick with 2666 mhz and a 16gb stick with 2666 mhz (the same), im also trying to get the most compatible ram sticks. hopefully this issue wont happen with me.

Same, I have 24gb and as long as it's configured like this, it will be dual channel: All sticks same timing, speed etc Slot A1 = 4gb Slot A2 = 8gb B1 = 4gb B2 = 8gb It works because channel A and channel B are both 12gb total. A and B are identical so it runs dual channel.

16GB is fine for most people, I upgraded to 32GB but performance mostly just changed in lows and actual RAM usage went up (not paging as much I guess). But overall it isn't noticeable unless you are checking for it but if you are buying a PC today I would say go for 32GB

Pagefile is horrible on storage devices, and bear in mind that most of the data moving through both pagefile and RAM is done with compression. Why Compression? Because the typical end-user does not purchase enough RAM in the first place, they buy less RAM than they should. FPS lows are in fact higher with higher module sizes and better speeds, one good reason right there to get the best your machine can handle. In most cases on current DDR5 that means using 2x32gig kit with 6400 speed. Blam pagefile use goes down, use of compression goes down, and you still have low RAM usage sure but its not using as many gimmicks to handle the information.

16RAM and 12Gg VRAM is more than enough for current gen games, at 1080p or 1440p. It's not because there are 2-3 poorly made games that have memory leaks and realy bad optimization that you now suddently NEED to upgrade. Next generation gamming you will have to use upscalling like FSR or DLSS that reduces the VRAM needs so, also no need to upgrade memory.

Yeey! THX! (I don't speak English, Google translate). Very good test! Perhaps 8+16 is also a good option (16+16, of course, is probably the best so far), although sometimes it lags behind 8+8 by 4-5fps, but sometimes 24GB, on the contrary, gives an advantage. I have 2 slots for RAM. And there is already 8GB. Therefore, the question arose what the performance would be if you add 16GB of RAM, how much lower it might be compared to the 16+16 option precisely because of the inability to work in full dual-channel mode, and not because of a lack of RAM. But in the end, it was interesting to see a situation where 8+8 still begins to not be enough and 8+16 suddenly gains an advantage even when only 17GB of RAM is occupied. But, if 8+16 showed itself very poorly, then it would make sense to take even 8+8 and reduce the quality of lighting, effects or textures and keep it to 14GB. But I still liked the option with 8+16 more, because... assumes a further upgrade if something happens. Interestingly, 16+32 cannot be forced to show a result similar to 16+16?

Around 10-12 years ago demand was max 16GB for work horse PC, so for a long run with more demanding software multiply it by two for the practical max size. Moore's law states that the number of transistors in IC doubles every 2 years so THEORETICALLY if one cpu core can fill up whole RAM memory with data for 1 minute, then 2 cores or core with 2 times more transistors can do it in half the time. So today's answer is 32GB and seems legit for most of the users, otoh devs should prepare themselves for more demanding memory leak fixes :D

@@DileeshaRajapaksha7887 You can simply calculate 2560x1440x32bitx60fps to find the minimum VRAM or RAM needed to save the rendered frames ... I'll say the compromise of 12GB buffer (median between 8 and 16GB) is not enough. You'll need at least 8 to 12GB dedicated for rendering before saving them to storage + at least 4 to 8GB free for other things. Interesting, mostly even 8 GB is enough, but if you check the 1% and 0.1% lows you will notice 16 GB is the bare minimum. I got 2666 MHz 2x8 RAM for my 10100F, RAM price waaay too cheap here. I considered to buy another 16 GB too make my PC more futureproof, since I bet I will use this RIG in the next 3-5 years.

I own a Radeon VII with 16bg and honestly having 2 monitors 4K I see it even not enough. Only with the monitors without wallpaper uses almost 15% .if I have the wallpaper engine with a 4k background,the gpu shoots me to 50/60%,so less than 16gb I would not buy ,even if it is a more current and better graphics card to play at more fps. It all depends on the needs of the user. Looking forward to see if the 7900xtx drop off even more in price after the 31.01

Wait until they cut support for Pisspoor and Xb0ner it will be worse. 16GB is fine if all you play is Crap like Warzone GTA V for the next 10 years 32GB costs 70$ FFS Its not 2016 anymore 16GB is fine but it isn't a sweet spot and not recomended for a new build in 2023 unless its a Retro GTA V machine.

Three points : - first of all, thanks for the benchmarks - several games are bottlenecked by the gpu with the graphic options you choose, so there is not much differences between 8 and 32 GB - the channels are important and with 2X8 or 16+8 it would have some differences using single vs dual channel, furthermore in gaming
@renerant

In case of different memory stick capacities, all modern processors run in "mixed" mode - for instance, with 16+8GB, the first 8+8GB runs in dual-channel, and the latter 8+0GB runs in single channel.

For your second point: Pay attention to the frame time graphs. As well as 1% and .1% lows, in almost every game they were significantly lower on less than 16gb. Which tells you in those scenarios the games would be a stutter fest. Hogwarts is unplayable with less than 32gb.

People on the DDR4 stuff can get 4x16 3200 kit for 140 dollars, its a stealing! Consider that can be on a z690 paired with 13900K, its going to handle multi-tasking and always have enough RAM for a long while. OR if on DDR5 2x32 6400 kit is 217 dollars....Or go with 2x48 6400 kit at 420 dollars, never worry about your RAM amounts. Do gaming, multi-tasking, everything and development...Never have a slow down or stutter due to RAM again.
