When I was a kid, I used to sit by the washer & dryer in the garage with my dog. It was calm, warm and protective. Now I'm 65 and still sit next to the machines for about 30 minutes before going to bed as it makes me relax and feel at peace. No dog anymore but I do have a cat that sleeps on the dryer when I'm there, so it's still just me and my 4 legged friends.

When I was a little girl I used to sleep on the washing machine with pillow and blanket and everything. I loved to feel the vibration and hear the sound perfectly, it made me so chilly and sleepy. (It still does) My mom found it strange at first, but soon after that it became our little secret. She would pick me up from the washer and put me to bed still sleeping so no one could find out. Today I am married and my husband bought a silent washer and I am devastated. It’s a blessing that I can listen it here every morning with a cup of coffee. Best way to start my day!

Since I was a kid, I've loved the sound of the washing machine. I always thought I was weird and the only time I talked to a few people close to me about it, he found it strange. I wouldn't be able to explain, but it relaxes me so much. A feeling of intense well-being and a gentle warmth that runs through my body, my mind becomes lighter and it wanders letting itself go. This feeling of being in a jacuzzi without being there, or being near a beautiful beach where you can hear the sound of the waves. It's a free trip! Every time I get chills when I get near the washing machine. And the day I discovered that there were videos, I was surprised, so when I discovered through the comments that I was not the only one and that people felt good about themselves with that noise, I was pleasantly surprised! :D

That's a really good hum sound stemming from this washing machine. I remember my mom taking me to the washeteria in London when I was a very young boy and I'd fall asleep to the sound of all the washing machines. It was extra special on a rainy day because you had the rain pelting off the washeteria front window with the sound of the washing machines and driers in the background.

When I was young I used to sit and hide under the counter next to the washing machine/tumble dryer and I remember it as a place I could go to get away from everything a nice warm secluded area with the ambient hum and rumble of the machines where no one would bother me and after hundreds of watches this video really helps bring me back to that time and provided a great deal of warmth and calm. This might just be me but part of the enjoyment of this video is reading everyone’s comments about their lovely child hood stories and realising that I’m not weird or alone in this.

What is the science behind this type of audio appeal? Is it a comforting childhood memory/safe space type thing or just that we happen to like this type of noise?

This audio is know as "white noise" it's basically every noise at the same time, but it's also no noise at all. it's really hard to explain but it's the same kind of noise that static TVs, propeller planes, and fans make. It's relaxing because the noise is consistent, it doesn't change in pitch or tone, so it's easier for our brains to process this noise and relax us. However, sound that's not consistent stresses us out because our brains are constantly working to process this rapid change in sound, therefore over working our brains
