Singapore, officially known as the Republic of Singapore, is a city-state and island country located in maritime Southeast Asia. It is situated about one degree of latitude (137 kilometers or 85 miles) north of the equator, off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. Singapore borders the Strait of Malacca to the west, the Singapore Strait to the south, the South China Sea to the east, and the Straits of Johor along with the State of Johor in Malaysia to the north.
The country’s territory comprises one main island, 63 satellite islands and islets, and one outlying islet. The combined area of these has increased by approximately 25% since the country’s independence as a result of extensive land reclamation projects. As of 2023, Singapore has a total land area of 734.3 square kilometers (283.5 sq mi).
Singapore has the second highest population density of any country in the world. The estimated population in 2023 is 5,917,600. Despite its high population density, Singapore is known for its numerous green and recreational spaces, a result of careful urban planning.
The nation recognizes four official languages: English, Malay, Mandarin, and Tamil, with English being the lingua franca. The multicultural population is reflected in the national policies in education, housing, and politics.
Singapore’s economy is highly developed, and it is one of the busiest ports in the world. The GDP (PPP) in 2023 is estimated to be $753.273 billion, and the per capita income is 133,107.
Singapore’s history dates back at least eight hundred years, having been a maritime emporium known as Temasek and subsequently a major constituent part of several successive thalassocratic empires. It gained self-governance on June 3, 1959, joined the Federation of Malaysia on September 16, 1963, and proclaimed independence on August 9, 1965.
Singapore is renowned for its remarkable economic transformation. A city once filled with squatter settlements and poor infrastructure is now characterized by modern skyscrapers, a world-class transportation system, and a high standard of living. This transformation was largely due to the vision of its founding Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, and his successors.
The city-state’s strategic location on major sea lanes and its industrious population have helped it become a thriving financial hub. It is home to one of the world’s busiest ports, and its airport, Changi, is consistently rated as one of the best globally.
Singapore’s education system is also highly regarded. The government’s emphasis on education has resulted in a highly skilled workforce, contributing to the country’s economic success. Singaporean students consistently rank among the top performers in international assessments.
Despite its small size, Singapore has a vibrant cultural scene. Its multicultural heritage is reflected in its cuisine, architecture, and festivals. The city is a melting pot of cultures, with Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Western influences.
Singapore is also known for its commitment to environmental sustainability. The government’s “City in a Garden” vision aims to weave green spaces into the urban fabric, resulting in a city filled with lush greenery and abundant biodiversity.
