Today Singapore is one of the richest and most prosperous nations on earth, but it's not exactly obvious how. At independence it was surrounded by hostile nations, had no natural resources, two thirds of its population lived in slums and it appeared destined to remain underdeveloped and poor. How did Singapore succeed when many other nations failed and is Singapore's economic miracle just too good to be true?

As a Singaporean, I know some people who hate Lee Kuan Yew but honestly without him, we would be living in slums, call him a dictator, but he made Singapore what we are today. He is indeed Singapore’s father.

As a Singaporean, I have mixed feelings about Lee Kuan Yew and his party. While he and his party has done a lot of good for Singapore, it is also important to be honest and transparent about the methods he used to achieve his goals. It is also useful to remember that not all of PAP policies worked. I think for Singapore to continue to prosper, we need to be able to be constructively critical about the government.

Lee Kuan Yew is honestly unreal. So much responsibility and pressure. Yet delivered in spades. Recommended reading as much as you can about LKY, there’s some great books out there

Please, lauding the achievements of a self confessed despot, sympathising with his "struggles" while ignoring those of the people he oppressed and forced to comply with his vision, is not a balanced view. Whether the end result is worth the real terror and physical pain he caused is a matter of opinion, but acknowledge all of what he did, not just the end result.

@@dragonfastback5440 you clearly never lived in extreme austerity and destitution then. Yes, he's harsh but by no means is he the worst despot even by Asian despot standards. Singapore is in a do or die situation when he came to power and the measures he took are necessary to clean up society and get back to work. The rounding up of dissidents might be bad in the west, but subversives are detrimental to the growth of a nation economically.

@@dragonfastback5440 well my grandfather always tells me that before LKY there was like constant gang violence to the point that the police didn't dare to do much and that the coffee shop that his father owned constantly had to pay protection money or get fucked so LKY made it a law that its the death penalty or something for any gang member or something yeah he was flawed and im sure that being called the godfather of modern singapore does get to your head but if he really was so selfish i doubt that singapore would be as safe and secure as it is today

Singapore is one of the few countries where Dictatorship done right under a benevolent leader who has a vision and care for his people. LKY is an inspiration for many leaders today that failed to achieve what he can.

Today so called western democratic societies are failing ... Violent crimes , rampant drug use , ideological battles have devided the society . Everything in moderation is needed . Developing countries have to take some steps for curtailing wokism and for the benefit of the nation and it's people.

As a Singaporean, this has brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for allowing me to revisit my country's history. Today, the land we stand on are built by the hard labor of our forefathers. I do understand that many foreign countries often view the policies made by LKY as authoritarian and "inhumane", but without him, we will not be where we are today. Because of his policies, people of different colors and ethnicity here in Singapore live together in harmony and are educated the importance of it since young. Today, we can all sleep soundly with our doors unlocked, without worrying about theft or robbery. And all these is only made possible by LKY. We are not a perfect nation and we do have flaws too, but i feel really blessed to be a Singaporean.

@Flare Thanks for this. Watching this, I was left wondering, what's the catch? Policies such as little or zero taxes for business, and banning of unions, always goes hand in hand with a wonderful life for the wealthy, but a horrible life for the poor. So I am glad to hear the other side of it via your comment, thank you Flare.

I think what is most impressive is how he used a dictatorship to teach the people and avoid corruption. Usually, once the government has the power, it usually only looks to take more. In Singapore, they actually stopped to see where they could improve, and if it required the people to have some more control, so be it. The government acted like a stern parent and not a greedy businessman. You got spanked, you got told what to do, but it was with the aim of making you a productive citizen, not just to use you up and spit you out.

So Lee's policies includes 1. Eradication of slum by public housing, minimize private housing 2. Keep low to none tariff of goods, even gives tax holidays 3. Ban union 4. Make harsh punishment to corrupt official, sometimes death 5. But also giving high wage to goverment officials 6. Invest heavily, HEAVILY, on education 7. Profit oriented - state owned company This successfully made singapore rich and powerful Yet Indonesian govt did the exact opposite

Yes, LKY led Singapore to prosperity. But let us not forget he had a great team of people in his Cabinet. And also the sacrifice and hard work put forth by the people of Singapore.

As a Malaysian, I truly admire Singapore, how the small country has became the most developed country in Southeast Asia. But honestly I feel attacked by the thumbnail 😅. I do believe my country is not poor. Not poor also not rich like our neighbours. I always wish that all countries in SEA will be prosperous together.

lived & worked in SGP in 1969-70, was one of the first Us technology companies there. The local workforce was amazinggly productive; hardworking, and willing to try whatever was being taught. In no time they were outdoing equivalent USA workers, and we could see the handwriting on the wall. Loved my time there and have many fond memories of kind and caring local people.

I just returned from my first visit to Singapore a few days ago and I was extremely impressed. The lack of goverment corruption and bureaucracy makes everything extremely efficient. From the time you arrive to the time you leave, you understand why it is called "the city of the future." Not because of self driving cars, robots, or things like that but because of the practical way the country is ran. All of the Singaporeans I met were extremely friendly and welcoming as well. I can't wait to return in the future.

Islam is an arabic word that means the Surrender to the One and Only God, our Creator, Protector, Provider, who gives us life and all that we have, we are safe and sound by his will and grace, we are His and to Him we return, and we have to thank him in this trial life by submitting to him by our free will, or later in the Day of judgment when it's too late to save our own skin. Islam was the original Religion descended to earth from heaven with Adam and Eve (peace and blessing be upon them) in the beginning of humanity. and was passed to people with the succession of the 124 000 prophets and 315 messengers of God to all nations and civilizations since, passing by Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ismaël, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, Solomon and Jesus (Peace and blessing be upon them) during the history of mankind, the last replaces and completes the previous, until the succession of the last messenger of God fourteen centuries ago, Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) to complete the noble morals of all mankind, to bring humans and jinns out of darkness into light, and to purify people's religion and belief from corruption and polytheism, and return it to purity and true monotheism, like it was in the times of the prophets (Peace and blessing be upon them). Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI). Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy. Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful. Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI). Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad). Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning! Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures. Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement. It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them. (19-22 / Translated by Muhammad Asad).. God said : Say, “We believe in Allah, and in what was revealed to us, and in what was revealed to Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the Patriarchs, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus, and in what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We do not differentiate between any of them. And to Him, we surrender.” (2:136 / Translated by Community) Salam (Peace) -----

To Singapore success depended on one leader like Lee Kuan Yew. He alone among despots and dictators who didn't enrich himself. That kind of man can only be born once in thousand years (to quote Dragon Ball). So, yes, Singapore success cannot be replicated by other countries, especially countries with despot leaders. Or even by Singapore themselves, if they think it is okay to have despot leaders. Because somewhere down the line, they will meet bad despot.

Ah another economist. And probably @casual scholar is an economist, too. I wanted to write the same comment. PLUS, acknowledging the advantage western societies have in inheriting and refining over centuries the laws and constitutions of ancient Rome; and in comparison a guy like LKY or, say, Mao or Deng Xiaoping, learn about them in the West and then just try to implement what they then believed makes sense, in wildly different approaches, in societies that are so not ready for it.

As a S'porean, we owe a great debt of gratitude to Lee Kuan Yew and his cabinet for the miraculous transformation to modern S'pore that we enjoy today. @@haruyanto8085 Yeah you're right. However, what makes Singapore unique in my opinion is the odds it faced in the early days of its independence from Malaysia. The country survived and later cooperated with its hostile neighbors and grew to have a huge GDP. And all this happened in about 30 years. For a city state such an achievement is huge. But also the fact that it's a city state with a relatively small population definitely helped.

Those countries you mentioned have larger population, large land and each of them have some sort of natural resources but Singapore have small land, small population and zero natural resources but within 50 years they transformed from a third world country to a first world country..............

Wow, this Lee Kuan Yew guy's capability is amazing. I'm only basing it from this video but it sounds like this guy and his political was really sharp, finding solutions for everything to make it into a productive country. I'm seeing some unfavorable comments about him but if you weigh out the good and the bad, he definitely did significant amount of good to the country. As a guy from Japan, this video was really informative to understand Singapore's upbringing. A little embarrassed that I didn't look this up before to be honest lol. In Japan it is quiet known how Singapore's a successful rich country, but I think the majority of us doesn't know how that happened. I will try to spread this knowledge to my friends whenever I get a chance. Thank you for the video!

As a Singaporean, I would like to say that Malaysia is not poor. Malaysia is a very resource rich country and on their own merits have achieved much as well. Also comparing Malaysia to Singapore is literally like comparing California to New York City. Being so much bigger in size and population, Malaysia has many challenges Singapore does not have.

@@KeoNz logistics is just more difficult, more people to think about, control, monitor and take care of. More chance for disagreements, factionalism. And it’s harder to distribute resources amongst population. It’s why for example Luxembourg and Monaco are richer than France, Spain and the UK. Or why China and India are poorer than the US. Or why Hong Kong and macau are richer than China. Or why UAE and Qatar are richer than Saudi Arabia. Or why the Nordic countries are so rich. A small country/region with good leadership always has better chances for success.

@@KeoNz imagine the difficulty and sheer cost of building electrical, water, housing, education, transport etc infrastructures for people that live in vastly different parts of a country…mountain ranges, deep jungles, riverside, lakeside, coastal communities. Now imagine a country smaller than most capital cities where all the people live in already urbanised areas within few kilometres radius from each other at most. Which is less of a headache to develop? What should Malaysian leaders tell its citizens? Force them to leave their homes and move to the city? Then they would be labelled dictators like Stalin and Mao… Not to mention, Malaysia has to deal with extremely disadvantaged borders with difficult to patrol dense jungles and close proximities to less stable countries or communities with populations much larger than Malaysia itself, while Singapore is bordered by…fish lol.

I've had the privilege of visiting Singapore while in the military in the 80s and then working there as a civilian with a multinational in the early 2000s. What an amazing place. I loved every single day and month I spent there. The people were wonderful and I made a number of lifetime friends. I'm retired now but I will go back to visit as soon as I have the chance. Congratulations Singapore YOU ARE one of the greatest places in the world.

Great video man. You did a great job of highlighting why it worked in Singapore but also shed light on why it might not work in bigger countries. What I find most interesting is that while the laws to clean up the nation were draconian in nature the state at the same time invested in its people and gave the people the ability to invest in themselves with the ownership of property. Also the government actively invested in its people with the development of education and infrastructure. While I don’t believe that all of Singapores policy’s could translate to another country the investment in its people, education, and infrastructure is surely something that I wish would be implemented in my country.

As a singaporean, i never felt living in fear in LKY's era..... The fact that we are who we are now and the new generation reaps the reward under his "iron fist" rule..... I can safely say, we are fortunate to have him as our pioneer leader..... Always felt safe walking alone in the middle of the night in any part of Sg..... We eat chewing gum anytime, anywhere we want..... Just dun stick the leftover anywhere.... You can have different opinion too.... We dun need a totally freedom of speech like the western countries, we just need a good leader to guide us through from a 3rd world country where we are now.....

I'm Singaporean and have watched many youtube documentaries on the rise of Singapore. Watched all of polymatter's video. This is by far the most accurate one I've seen. It tells it like it is. Especially how Lee Kuan Yew decided to go the authoritarian route to stabilize the country and grow the economy at an insane rate. KZbin creators either focus on the authoritarianism or over romanticize our success. Casual Scholar has managed to show that both sides are deeply entwined why many of our draconian laws helped build the success. It's unfortunate that the government is reluctant to let go of LKY's way despite our success no longer needed it.

I think since gck took over many things have changed. Especially in recent years, the government actually bothers to do some PR. In recent decades, Singapore has also moved to universal access to medical care, implemented minimum wages, and given a decent allowance of $600 a month to those who are unable to work and have no family support. This along with a whole host of other social policies would never have been thought possible in LKY's time. It's just not his direction. I think the only 2 things that the present government has inherited are that it is deeply practical and focused on bringing social cohesion. I don't think that it has an iron fist like LKY, nor can it have an iron fist without LKY.

I have a lot of respect for Lee kwan Yew, for his personal values and all that he did for his country. I am European though, which implies I am supposed to criticize his authoritarian regime. However, I'm not. He had no choice but to have an authoritarian rule not only to save his country but also to develop it. Today, Singapore is one of the richest countries in the world, and this is thanks to Lee Kwan Yew. He is a model for many leaders, which explains why he was consulted for advice by rulers such as Deng Xiaoping and Xi Jinping. What he achived is looks like a miracle, but it's not. What he did for Singapore worked because it was simply the best way to do in order to develop his country.

I just came back from Singapore. Most people have no idea how well this island is ruled. It's like coming back from another planet. Everything looks new, extremely well maintained and clean. People are respectful and hard working, and they enjoy a world class transportation system which looks pristine and is comfortable, the best gardens and public spaces in the world, the best airport in the world by far, fantastic public healthcare, the best banking system, high security, a world class education system, good wages, etc. The reason it works is because the economy there is geared towards the public, not diverted to benefit only a handful of billionaires. If it means that a little less democracy is necessary for it to work, so be it, the people there are among the luckiest in the world.

another fun fact for you, nowadays the people there wants to move to malaysia permenantly. cause: 1. the country is too small, comparable to the smallest state in malaysia. you can see everything there in few days. 2. they cant move to western countries, since theyre collapsing and oil prices is too high 3. they cant move to arab countries 4. they cant move to east asian countries, cause also collapsing and oil price 5. oil price in malaysia is very cheap compare to theirs since malaysia has lots of oil resources, singapore has none. they even buys water from malaysia at few cents per litre of water 6. singapore is literally collapsing along western countries and east asian countries 7. malaysia is very tolerant towards other race but in actuality, its very difficult to obtain citizenship in malaysia.

I visited Singapore twice. I loved it. Singapore Airlines is absolutely one of the best in the world. I almost committed the crime of littering my first trip there. I decided to eat a Kraft caramel while my friend and I were walking on the sidewalk on Orchard Road. The little candy wrapper somehow slipped out of my hand. My friend and I started running after it so that we wouldn't get caught littering. Thank goodness I got the wrapper and put it in a trash receptacle. My friend and I laughed about that incident for years. We were on our Ps and Qs the whole time we were three. I would love to visit Singapore again some day.

I see. In the early years, when the country was a slum, the government had to be strict because people in that “pioneer” generation were uneducated and practiced uncivilised behaviour such as spitting, urinating / pooping in the streets etc. Imposing fines was a way to deter these behaviours. The generations that followed have been educated in schools about keeping the environment clean. If you visit Singapore today, you will still see litter around, but not so much. The government employs cleaners to sweep the streets and housing estates every day; thats also why the place is so clean. Its not that people are so afraid to litter. I was born in Singapore in 1979 btw. And just to share, here are 2 videos about the cleaners in Singapore’s parks and housing estates. Singapore is also effective because it has only top down corruption and not bottom up. So can effectively benefit from criminal enterprise because it doesn't come at the cost of bringing their institutions into question; as exemplified by the pervading idea of Singapore in the west.

Western media may call Lee Kuan Yew a dictator. But to me he is like a grandfather - he is always thinking of Singapore's survival every moment he is awake. He would think of what works for Singapore and implement it with an iron fist. For example, he thought it would be a good idea for Singapore to be a Garden City - that was way before sustainability and green were catchwords. Even today, there are plans to plan 1 million trees from 2020 to 2030. I am so blessed to be born here - there is no where like Singapore.

Singapore has been going downhill for the past 15 years. The culture is changing. It has the world`s highest gini coefficient in the developed countries, just after Hong Kong. That means it is a very unequal income distribution countries. Some people are benefitting more than the majority of the people.

Obviously SG currently is amazing and its success shouldn't be taken for granted, but it needs to continue to plan ahead with long term strategies that ensure its competitiveness generations into the future. Im not sure what policies our government will implement, but the self serving and somewhat arrogant nature of the young is already an impediment to our development. Then we have MNCs and rich businessmen to bow to. Even today, our continued economic success remains tenuous, we can only hope that SG continues to have leaders with the foresight to reform our economy and lay down the framework for the future.

Eradicate corruption, put good smart people with integrity to lead and rally the people to work together for the good of all. The rest is history. I was there in the 60s and still there now. It wasn't easy in the beginning. In the 60s and 70s, we were so poor that sometimes my family of 6 were eating plain porridge with soya sauce. We studied and work very hard to get here.

I'm full heartedly NOT agree with this video's main narrative which is sounded like a Singaporean success 'it was because' and have to do with Lee's authoritarian. There were SO MANY other humility factors that made Singapore as success story as Singaporeans today because of a strong man yet equity, smart and very talented Lee Kuan Yew. As Lee was no where vicious and deadly dictator compared to George Washington and his peers who slaughtered the mass of Native Americans before it stole from them and independent its stolen land called USA. This Western criminalilty occured across its pre- and during colonial era until today who were not only thievery, but deadly across South to North Americas, and stolen Australia and New Zealands from Asian Natives and so on. I think this video's host or content creator should put the mirror on himself and how morally to reflect on others from his systemic racist or racism and continued to behave as a European privileged White upon other's second class or less worth of human beings!

here is another fun fact for you, nowadays the singaporeans wants to move to malaysia permanently, cause: no 1. the country is too small, comparable to the smallest state in malaysia. you can see everything in singapore in few days. 2. they cant move to western countries, since theyre collapsing and oil prices is too high 3. they cant move to arab countries 4. they cant move to east asian countries, cause also collapsing and oil price 5. oil price in malaysia is very cheap compare to theirs since malaysia has lots of oil resources, singapore has none. they even buys water from malaysia at few cents per litre of water. literally the same price since their independence. 6. singapore is literally collapsing along western countries and east asian countries 7. malaysia is very tolerant towards other race 8. malaysia is a very peaceful and beautiful countries. lots of beautiful beaches and tropical jungle and of course very affordable cost of living but in actuality, its very difficult to obtain citizenship in malaysia. they can only visit malaysia once in a while.

Singapore buys water cheaply from Malaysia, but lets not conveniently forget, a portion of the water is treated and sold back to Malaysia at a loss. It cost Singapore $1.50 to treat the water and they sold back to Malaysia at $0.50. I doubt Singapore is collapsing. The exchange rate would state otherwise. S$1 : RM 3 plus. Maybe if 1MDB did not happened U mean Bumiputera Malays are tolerant of other races or the other way round? The policies drawn up are designed to benefit ethnic Malays first, no?

Singapore is a success. Of most of the countries that were under British rule there are but a handful who have exceeded expectations to be a commercial, financial and civil success. Considering that Singapore had so little in terms of commodities they are the benchmark. Lee Kwan Yew legacy can't be questioned.

I've always been curious about Singapore's situation and how it worked out for them, but never been able to find more than a dry economic accounting; nothing that addressed the circumstances around it, or at least that did so as succinctly as you have here. You've also done a lot better with the video editing; I don't remember a single point where there was a blank bit of black screen! Thank you very much.

“…never been able to find more than a dry economic accounting… ” Read Stan Sesser’s “A Nation of Contradictions” in _The New Yorker_ or as a chapter in the book _The Lands of Charm and Cruelty._ It‘s 30 years old at this point and, therefore, dated in parts, but it‘s still a great and fascinating overview of the development of modern Singapore and the part that Lee Kuan Yew played in it, both the positive and negative aspects. It covers a lot of what is in the video here but in more detail, as well as other topics (such as the treatment of the opposition) not covered.

as a singaporean, thank you for so accurately representing our history. This is by far the best video i have watched by any international source about singapore, and the way you've shown that singapore has been flawed, it was for good reason, and worked in the context of singapore alone. also, unions WERE banned, but now there is a union, called NTUC. it runs a large supermarket chain (and also it's nationalised lmao). you also have to consider the problems that our superior healthcare has caused: our rapidly aging population means there's an even larger emphasis on healthcare, and a large percentage of our population are not in the working class. this has sparked policies of re-employment of the older generation, and also, implementation of various employment policies which prioritise singaporeans (TAFEP). our lack of land has lead to reclamation efforts doubling down (with the building of terminal 5 of the changi airport, we'll have the first airport built on reclaimed land). speaking about the airport, the changi airport has been one of the best (if not the best) in the world for many many years. the emphasis on education has created a draconian curriculum, that while competitive, has increased adolescent stress and depression rates exponentially. An estimated 50% of all Singaporean teens are suffering from depression, largely due to the highly rigorous and demanding curriculum. singapore is an incredibly multifaceted society which has been forced to walk the tightrope since the very beginning, in the context of the cold war when it gained independence. it traded with the soviet union, rejected western influence, (so it could join the UN, and maintain US interest in the region) and formed ASEAN (to gain an equal say in the region, prevent the vastly larger Indonesia from gaining unparalleled power within SEA) in order to maintain its fragile sovereignty, and it would not have been possible without LKY.
