Someone has a Tyranid player in his group he doesn't like very much. Seriously though, this is strong, but it's not stronger than Imperial Guard, Eldar, Space Marines (thanks Guillieman) or Deathguard. It sounds scarier because Tyranids don't get a lot of bells and whistles, their unit buffs are amazing and they have a handful of scary profiled units, but they lack the over the top stratagems, relics, warlord traits and psychic powers that make other armies so powerful right now. Power creeping is a real thing, but it is no concern in the long run, because it equals out. Of course the Codex is stronger than the Index, that's how it's supposed to be. Almost any new codex is greeted as the next overpowered thing that ruins the game and in the end it doesn't really impact as much, because slowly the game and the codices equal out in powerlevel.

The shooting needed a buff so that is good, hope they are not afraid to also buff ork shooting since you can't play without dakka. Would make them less one dimensional. Think the new synapse rules also open up for more play styles so that's a good thing.

GrimDoctor I was looking at getting the collector's edition because I am really into Tyranids, but from what I can tell, £25 gets you black page edges and a fancy cover. Have I missed something?

GrimDoctor yeah I had the same intentions when it came to Tyranids, because they are by far and away my favourite army. Not a single unit or model that I don't like. You're making me want to get the collector's edition now somehow! Haha I just feel like £25 extra is too much for what you get. I was hoping for an exclusive extra narrative section, artwork, objective markers, a turn counter; anything that would justify the extra money. We will see if my sentimentality gets the better of me over the course of the next few days!!

thanks for the review; just a note, the amazing "Psychic Barrage" with its unprecedented 3d3 mortal wounds is the same as the space marine Linebreaker Bombardment - except the linebreaker is better range (inebreaker is 24, the tyranid one is 18"). Just an FYI.

I would add Behemoth to the absolutely brilliant Hive Fleets. Tyranids have a HUGE amount of options to deep strike CC units (Trygon Tunnel, Drop Pods, Raveners, Lictors, Now Flyrants and Gargoyles). Plus you can usually eqip these guys with Adrenal Glands. Suddenly half of your army can have a rerollable 8" charge on turn 1. Seems pretty scary to me.

I would consider Kraken, probably. It's 3D6 and choose the highest for advance rolls and they are allowed pull out of melee and still charge again in the same turn. Hydra seems good since it has a reroll to hit in close combat as long as your unit has more models than the other, but considering Hormagaunts already reroll 1s anyway and monsters can't profit from it at all, it's not that good to me. Hydra makes up for that by having the stronger stratagems (healing on the warlord, replenishing all infantry units instead of just gaunts). It really depends, Kraken is all about mobility, Hydra is about numbers. Both make good traits for swarm based armies to me.

40k 8th edition, has a starter box "Dark Imperium". That comes with the rules and two factions. Death Guard and Primaris. This is a good start point for current 40k. Primaris are true scale marines, and the old midget marines may be phased out over the next few years.

I don't think you're supposed to have an e sound between d and r at the end, but otherwise it looks correct. J at the beginning of Norse/Nordic words is more or less pronounced as English Y. Yule (English) and Jul (Norwegian) is pronounced exactly the same, to give an easy example.

I find the abilities and bonuses for having 3 units of the same type (landspeeders, predators, zonethropes etc.) an ill disguised marketing trick from GW's side, taking the game in a buy-to-win direction, I really dislike. I like the 8th edition, but if the fanboys think GW has become a friend of the community, they are as naive as people who think Facebook is their friend.

The psychic barrage isn't that powerful, and requires a lot to pull off. Also if you didn't buy all the zoan's, you would buy other units to max out your points, so your wallet gets devoured anyway.

In what way? compared to what? all of the armies that have codex's are now more powerful than the index version, that was always going to be the case. Do you think that any particular codex is weaker than the others? I hope that what will happen is that all the codex's will come out then they will let them get played for 6 months to year and then release a chapter tactics approved to try and balance out the inequalities, with FAQ's released inbetween to sort any major issues (like they've done for the IG commissar issue).

Want to know why no other army can do that? Because Nids don't have identity. L:iterally. Everything is just a part of the hive mind. Each monster is able to be spawned in every army. Their 'names' are simply titles the imperium has given them. There can be countless hive tyrants, countless carnifex, countless 'old one eye', countless 'red terrors'. They're simply the name of the specific bio-organism. So it makes perfect thematical sense. It isn't like Tyrants are only found in one kind of hive fleet, or fex's in another, etc. It would make ZERO sense for Nids to have 'named characters'. It'd break fluff and assume that the Nids are self aware enough to have a 'hero' character. There are no 'heros' in regards to nids. Simply a single mind in many bodies for one sole purpose. Consume...everything. Also, Nids getting ANYTHING remotely OP is fine by me. About time they get something that makes bitches like you cry.

eh, im happy they're available across the fleets, but there isn't really a lore excuse, true they do not have "characters" in most cases. but fleets don't share adaptions, and they don't remain the same even in a single invasion, the gaunts landing on the planet day 1 of the invasion would be quite a bit different from gaunts fighting even a few weeks later (problematic to represent in plastic). but most of the older characters were a new adaption during a specific invasion and wouldn't be shared between fleets. a fleet would create the adaption and carry it forward but i don't really see them publishing their findings to share the new discovery with the tyranid scientific community. Swarmlord to my knowledge was never linked to anything specific like an event or fleet. and that guy has always been pretty much all over the place just rare spawned when there was a need. some of the others over the years have become more like an alpha spawning then a character as well (deathleaper/red terror), and they've removed most with a story linked to an event (doom/parasite). Old one eye remains though and is a character in the same way as other factions characters. He very much is a unique tyranid. Unless the lore now has abandoned his story and has them all spawning with the exact same injury. Which would be weird. Or maybe Sly marbo travels the galaxy infiltrating hive ships to carve up the face of every alpha carnifex he can find. I'd have preferred they called a character carnifex something new and given Old one eye some rest finally, let him join parasite and doom. It would have been cool though to do a bunch of prime/alpha versions of units and then limit them to fleets. push a little roster variation.
